View Full Version : Today's music is either BORING or ANNOYING!

I can hardly stand to listen to the radio anymore. There are so many boring new songs out there right now. Songs like, "Why Don't You and I", "Amazing", and then top 40 plays way too much rap. What is going on? What songs do find boring or annoying? I feel like there's nothing for me to listen to. I end up having to listen to the classic rock station, but they play the same songs over and over. Is anyone else frustrated with today's music? Wasn't music better and more entertaining in the 80's? I think it was.

Yeah, I liked the 80s better also, then again I was alot younger back then too.

Uh ohh! Don't get me started! :)
"I feel your pain". I did a thread veeery similar to this one some weeks back & I said almost the same things you said... except I was saying em *in* the 80s!

Back in the 80s, I was hating stuff like Milli Vanilli, New Kids.., Tiffany. All crap. I think the best music of the 80s came out of the early 80s. Lots of that clever new wave was happening. After around '83 or so, when MTV started to really take hold, I think it's been a downward spiral for the most part. But there were a few bright spots along the way. The grunge thing really shook things up *and*...the rise of rap. Some may not like it, but it really did catch on around the world. I like it. Just that I can't stand the very commercial stuff. (eg: P. Diddy et al)

I've found there's only one way to avoid lousy music- avoid the radio. Radio isn't what it used to be. It's all controlled by big, faceless media giants & that's exactly why when you turn on your classic rock (or any popular genre) station, you're hearing the same 10 songs again & again. I go by word-of-mouth these days or cool magazine review. I don't watch MTV.

I read an interiew w/ Tom Petty a while ago & he said "At the risk of sounding like an old geezer, I don't wanna say 'today's music doesn't come close to 70s & 60s music'...but it's true!" (I'm paraphrasing) Where are our Dylans? Where are our Marvin Gayes & Arethas? Where are our Beatles? We're not seeing
pioneers anymore.

And what scares me is the thought of some kid in the year 2023 saying something like- "Man, I swear! Why can't we have good stuff like Justin Timberlake & The Spice Girls??!"

I'm 15 years old, and I don't listen to a lot of the music that's out today. I listen to some of the rock stuff that's out now, but mostly I like to listen to early 90's rock. In my opinion, music today seems to be more about how much money or power a person can get out of it. It's all about being an icon in today's world, not writing and playing music that other people can relate with, not making music just because you love it...what it's really about.

Music was way better in the 60's and 70's, as soon as bands started making videos and record companies figured out that they could sell an image everything started going downhill

I listen to 2 local stations: Xfm (pop/alternative), and Jack!fm - who's slogan is "playing what we want!", its a cool station that plays obscure/cool/hits from any time from the 60's to the present. Take a look in the "what are you listening to now" thread for an idea - everything i posted there was from that station.

The only new music that's good doesn't get the airplay it deserves. I like weezer, Hot Hot Heat, the Donnas...

Mainstream music isn't up to standards nowadays. You have to dig through the indies to find the gems.

Good for you sticking to your musical guns like that in the face of peer pressure! :clap

Odds are, your friends will come around in time & realize the real value of much recent music. You're miles ahead of em! :)

80's rock is like... the best thing ever invented. Don't worry, I'm only 14 (well almost 5) and my friends just can't understand why I don't listen to Rap. Ick.

You're a pretty smart 5 year old then. ;)

I like some rap...but all of that Beyonce/Destiny's Child/Ashanti R&B crap annoys the hell out of me. Same goes with Britney Spears and all that other bubble gum pop. Chirstina at least has a voice.

I agree. I don't like that type of music, but I have to admit that Christina's Beautiful IS a good song, and certainly better than anything Miss Spears has done.

The problem I have w/ Christina is the way she relies too heavily on that old "vocal acrobatic" thing. You know it. When the singer tries to stretch a single note out for 10 minutes. Vibrato in the voice, going up & down. It's a total R&B cliché. Its been done for years now.

Too many current "slow groove" R&B songs have that *exact* same processed drum beat. It's like a cookie cutter, only w/ different singers thrown in. The 'soul' left soul music a long time ago....

what is the deal with Hilary Duff. Any pop singer whose IDOL is Britney Spears you know something is wrong with them. I know people who like Britney as a guilty pleasure type. But most of the younger and 20-something female pop/r&b singers look up to and cite Janet, Madonna, Mariah, Whitney, Barbra, Aretha, Donna Summer, Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, Debbie Harry and the like, all of which have had long careers and are all legends in their own rights, as their idols and influences... whereas Hilary cited Britney, someone who has only been around for 5 years, and has about as much "musical" and artistic respect as Jennifer Lopez, as her idol and inspiration... WHAT A JOKE.

Plus, all of Hilary's fans I know are children.

lol, I was so cringing. On E.T. one night, they had a special following Hillary while she's getting to meet her idol, Britney. Lord, was it not only 2-3 years ago when Britney was excited to meet people like Madonna, Janet and Mariah? Whether you like those or not, at least they've all had longevity and have been around. Has the youth of America really regressed THAT BADLY in 3 years time?

If Hillary Duff's musical tastes are in any way representative of most ordinary American youth's tastes...then we're in big fat, 12-sandwich eatin' trouble. :)
However, I'd *like* to think that she isn't.
S.O's very own Hannah Lee & Miss Karly are living proof that not all youth have fallen down the dark route. They can't be alone. :)

As for Britney- geez, this is the same numbskull who, when asked, had no idea who Yoko Ono[i] & [i]Linda McCartney were... There was another equally outrageous statement she made recently..lemme dig it up...

it's not so much whether the songs are written or not by the artist. It's that right now, top 40 radio is at the biggest lull ever.

In the most general way, that's *kind of* how I feel too. I like plenty of catchy songs by one-hit/ no name acts from over the years. Though speaking strictly today's music, I'm not hearing as many. That's why I've turned to people like The White Stripes & several other bands that don't get heavy rotation.

But I refuse to give crap like Britney a chance not only because I don't like her stuff, but also b/c I know it's complete processed assembly line "product". That's ok for the casual music listener, but I'm not a casual listener....

When every song in the top 40 sounds just like every other song....it gets old. People who live for music and listen to it all the time cannot appreciate that crap. They want some songs that have meaning to them. Songs they can relate to. That's what music is supposed to be anyway.....not some get-rich-quick-and-sell-all-the-other-crap-I-can scheme.

We can't necessarily stop it, but we *can* fight it. Don't buy the damn cds. Don't support the "music" the machine puts out. Easier on paper, I know, but not impossible.
