View Full Version : Are movies still rereleased in theaters?

It used to be that if a movie made an Oscar sweep, it would be rereleased in theaters.
Are movies still given a second go around in theaters for any reason these days?
I'm asking because I saw CHICAGO on DVD, and I'd love to see it on the big screen.

ET was rereleased in 2002 for their 20th anniversary. I was disppointed, though, because they didn't include Harrison Ford's scene as Elliot's principal following the frog incident.

They do give some movies re-release to promote the dvds and for the Oscar race.
As far as Chicago, I think it was re-released in late July.
In the Boston area it is playing at this theater right now:
(when in doubt, check moviefone)
Patriot Cinemas East Providence 10
60 Newport Avenue, Rumford RI 02916
1:00pm | 6:40pm

Thanks dlemond. I guess I missed the boat on the rerelease. Rhode Island is over an hour's drive....I don't think I'd travel to see it.
I should have caught it the first time around. :bonk:
I also love Moviefone.

I didn't even notice it was RI.
I just asked for Boston, and whatever area in Boston I picked that theater came up.
You know, I work and I slave for you, and you can't even make the simple effort of gassing up your car and driving a couple hours to spend $10 on a movie that you already rented?
I'm not mad, just dissapointed.

There are several theatres here that show old movies on the big screen, so I wouldn't be surprised if Chicago is re-released in the future. They are usually cheaper the second time around anyways. ;)

I wish there was a theatre like that in my area- see some older films, even films that are only about 5 years old, just for the big-screen experience, cos five years ago there are films I was too young to see in theatres too. There's talk of our crappy theatre closing- and I kinda hope it does. There's been alot of people before looking to build a new theatre but because there was already 1 theatre they didn't want competition- so if it's shut down maybe there'll be someone to build a better one (anythings better than the one now). A couple times they wanted to build complexes, with concert halls, stadiums, cinemas etc in the town- it still may also go ahead- but you can bet if it's part of a complex it only shows the latest releases. Ya know Easyjet- well they have like an Easytheatre thing now- for 20p (I think that's like 45 cents- it's no frills, but so's our theatre now) you can see a film, but major distributors won't sell them latest releases, just movies a few years old- but they're investigating that to see if it's legal. I'd love to see Little Shop of Horrors in the cinema, maybe someday I'll own a theatre- I hope.
Star Wars was also re-released, and wasn't Beauty and the Beast re-released?
Nowadays, since the rise of VHS and now DVD, a movie has it's released date on video already locked in, so the chance of it getting re-released at a later date are rare.
I missed the days when I was a kid, and a Summer blockbuster would stay in the theaters for months. Heck some theaters kept the original "Star Wars" film playing for an entire year! Now a Summer film is on DVD by Thanksgiving.
I do believe George Clooney is trying to get his "Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind" re-released in theaters this Fall. I guess he wants the flick to get some more attention before the Oscar ballots are sent out.

Sorry, *hangs head in shame* ;)
Actually, if I could talk the hubby into the drive to RI, I'd do it. I would just love to see this movie on the big screen with surround sound.

I'm looking forward to Confesssions of a Dangerous Mind myself. According to videoeta.com, it's scheduled for video release September 9th.

It's star-studded for sure with great reviews.

Movies can't get an oscar nomination if they're available on dvd or video before the oscars- there was a debate about the movie 'Bloody Sunday' because as well as being shown in select theatres, even in the US I think- the UK broadcast it 2 weeks after it's cinema premiere, and some academy members wanted to nominate it
Wasn't Halloween re-released? Maybe it was just dvd..

Back in the 50's right through the 80's, Disney re-released classic Disney films like "Snow White", "Cinderella", Bambi" and other animated classic reissues. I don't know any of these reissues since the "Little Mermaid" was re-released in 1998. I hope that I'm not sure if Disney will bring back classics to re-release in theatres.

I think I already mentioned that but yeah. I can't wait to see it! I saw the trailer before Jeepers Creepers 2 today and it seems exciting.

Last year I believe one of my theatres was showing "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", which was originally released in 2000.

If you weren't told The Italian Job was getting rereleased would you really notice? It hasn't been out of theatres that long though.
The Exorcist was rereleased a few years ago with extra footage, and the dvd was also called Directors Cut as I recall.
I haven't even seen Alien before-and i've heard good things about it so I think I might take the chance to go see alien for the first time-on a big screen. I also hope the Chicago rerelease is true.
Alien will probably do well, it's still a popular film but there are many fans who've never seen it on the big screen-horror is scarier on the big screen. I never scream when I watch signs on video-but in the cinema it's different, pity I'm not old enough to see and Freddy Krueger films on the big screen, I was like 5 when New Nightmare came out, they had a freddy krueger picture up for years after it.
