View Full Version : So Many Channels, So Few Good Shows in Reruns

With all the channels that are out today, why is it that it's just the same sitcoms being rerun. Like "The Cosby Show". It's on TBS, WGN, and N@N. Pretty soon "Roseanne" will be on both N@N and Oxygen. Let's get some other shows in the rerun game. And it seems like most of the TBS shows move on to N@N. Some examples; "Coach", "Roseanne", "Fresh Prince", "Full House" and like I mentioned "The Cosby Show". Why can't those shows take a good six year break and then come to N@N.
Anyways what are all of your thoughts on this topic?

Oh, I quite agree. And what really aggravates me is that they'll take a show and run it four or five times a day till even the most loyal fans get sick of it. There's so many good shows out there and we keep ending up with the same ten or twelve. And then when they actually do drag out the good stuff, they put it on at some ungodly hour of the morning so they can squeeze in more hooey during prime time. I've seen it a million times.
OK, time for me to hop off the ol' :soapbox: .
Any other comments and/or nasty noises?

Yep. Some shows are so overrated that they get played over and over again and some shows are so underrated that they never get shown. :(

I agree. They need to get rid of the Cosby Show and replace it with something good.

Ugh. So many good shows gathering dust while we're forced to watch endless reruns of cult crap like The Brady Bunch and overplayed stuff like I Love Lucy.

There is NOTHING on television.
Thank God for VHS and DVD's.
The only thing I watch on TV is the stockmarket, TV Land and this gem show channel. and pretty soon I am going to limit my viewing of TV Land because some of my favorite shows are going to be replaced with garbage:mad:
The only time I am going to watch TV Land when Wecome Back, Kotter and WKRP is on in September

I wonder what the point is in rerunning certain shows to death. Most of them are shows everyone is sick of anyway, why not try something new? Sheesh.

I enjoyed Tv Land last summer when they had The Rookies, S.W.A.T. and Mary Hartman but they never showed every episode. They also only showed The George Burns And Gracie Allen show on once a week. Well at least Flip Wilson will be coming back next year.:livid:

You can say that again. I can flip through a hundred different channels, and yet there really doesn't seem to be much on. Not in the variety category, at least. I don't watch much network television, except for Thursday nights on NBC.
And when you want to watch something late at night, on any given day, you're bombared with nothing but informercials. A friend of mine and I were talking about that old show they used to air on USA, called Night Flight. That was the best!

Well I'll tell you one thing. I'm so sick of Seinfeld and Friends on tons of channels. Both of those shows are on seven days a week and maybe five times a day on different channels. 7×5= 35 times a week on TV!!! I'M SO SICK OF IT!

The one sitcom that I really want to see back on television badly is The Lucy Show and TV Land won't budge an inch to acquire the rights to it. Instead, they rather would air those same old The Andy Griffith Show and Leave It To Beaver episodes over and over and over and over and over again again again til your bored to death with 'em!

I agree about the Seinfeld/Friends situation. Here, Seinfeld is on 4 times a day, twice on TBS and WXMI 17. Friends airs 3 times a day on TBS and 2 local stations. It would great if one of those stations could replace Friends with something like NewsRadio, something different.

I think that when a network reruns a show, they should start with the first episode, run the episodes every day at the same time in order, and then when they reach the last episode, let it rest for about three months before they run it again. I also think that a show should be on one and only one channel. That way, different shows could be given exposure instead of the same ones over and over again.

And dramas, movies, reality shows, sports, and news. For example, ESPN likes to repeat "Sportscenter" 12 times a day! AMC has been repeating movies constantly. I mean "all the time!". A little while back, I surfed through the channels and every news channel was focused on New York! And this while the blackout was situated in the northern region w/several states being affected! Its like if something happens to New York, America has to shut down. But that's beside the point.
Then its summer and things are bogging down until the kids go back to school. People are on vacation. And so forth. But even so, I must say that there is enough archived content on film or tape to keep several networks running 24 Hour Programs w/no commercials. Think about all the shows, sporting events, news, etc that's been recorded over the years. What happens to the footage? It doesn't just disappear. Its in a vault somewhere & is not getting aired. Amen.
That's what's so great about the internet. All sorts of content is placed on this format for the people! You can look up whatever you want and not have to sit through the junk such as commercials, infomercials, pop ups, and what have you. Its WORLDWIDE and so Viacom can't buy chunks of it to show Pop Up Ads on SPIKE, Constant Cosby on NICK, Rap on BET (mostly). And what do the TV People need?: Competition.
I can understand to some degree about the shows sharing networks. Different regions, different audiences, and all. What I don't understand is the repitition. Too little shows, for whatever reason, are being shown to the people in a most annoying manner. This business of popping up info on the screen during the shows has got to be dealt with (TV PEOPLE competing with INTERNET but sucking at it).
Has anybody seen the new SPIKE TV setup? Awful!!! Some would say that the Black Bar is more suitable than what SPIKE'S doing to their (low rated) shows. Specifically SPIKE has debuted a very annoying animated logo in the corner. What looks to be like a hand w/a can of spray paint draws out the name SPIKE TV in script form (like its cool or something). After 20 seconds the logo moves; yea it rotates and says FIRST NETWORK FOR MEN. Then it rotates back to the SPIKE TV logo. I had to give a ZERO on the report card for SPIKE.
Cable has taken the crap parts of TV and spread it all over. They invented infomercials for cable. Home shopping channels. The info on screen started out on cable and has gone all over. Some is good but most is crapolia. I think people are getting ripped off w/cable.
Anyways what are all of your thoughts on this topic?
Well I believe that the TV People, unless they have massive debts, should be showing more content and less crapolia. Advertising is fine to pay the bills, but its gone beyond that I think. The amount of content that is not airing on TV is incredible I'm sure. The system has to change. And that's all there is to it. Maybe it will eventually if enough people figure it out.
I myself plan my TV Schedule specifically to find the most interesting content. I'm very pleased that Hallmark Channel is showing Little House & M*A*S*H in a little bit. Quincy M.E. is also a very deep show w/good 70s programming. Incredible Hulk on Sci Fi. Some sports (Carolina Tarheel basketball draws me in). Not so much news or reality shows or modern shows for Retro Man. Amen. And w/the "Modern TV Classics" on Nick at Nite, I've gotten tired of watching that channel. On average, maybe 3 or 4 hours of TV a day w/some varieties depending on specials etc. (Like this weekend NOTHING GOOD was on but Little League World Series. And I only watched parts of it; probably less than 3 hours).
The big problem is it's largely the same 50 shows or so that keep jumping around the dial, while other once popular shows with nice network runs like Jack Benny, Ann Southern, Benson, Too Close for Comfort, ALF, etc hardly see the light of day!!!

"Full House", "Match Game", "Lizzie McGuire" and "Sex and the City" would stood be on different channels.
