Of the four KISS solo albums, Ace Frehley's was the biggest seller, which was perhaps not the best career move for "Space Ace." The success of the album further convinced Ace to leave KISS to go on a solo career, and when he eventually did, he recorded very sporadically, as well as get in lots of trouble with drinking, driving, and drugs.

Musically, the Ace Frehley solo album is the best, with "New York Groove," "I Want Some Love," "Fractured Mirror," and "Rip It Out," very good rocking songs from 1978.

Ace's album was good, but I like Paul's just as much.

Paul's was good, too. I can't believe I did the silliest thing when I was 15, I skipped my paper route one afternoon to go all the way up to Seattle to get an autograph from PAUL STANLEY in Seattle!!!!! People were pissed at missing their paper, I got yelled at, I felt bad--BUT IT WAS PAUL STANLEY OF KISS!!!!! WORTH THE HASSLE IN 1978!!!!!:notworthy :notworthy :notworthy He was at Peaches Records in the U District, in full makeup and costume, signing copies of his solo album. It was so cool to meet him!!!! And you know what he said to me????

"Take care."

Ace and Paul's solo albums were good Kiss albums. Only makes sense, because Paul was the main lyricist for Kiss, and Ace was Ace. He hadn't doped and soused his brain away completely at that point.

Gene and Peter's solo albums were ego trips. Although, Gene had a few good songs, like "Man of 1,000 Faces", "See You Tonight", "Radioactive" and "Always Near You/Nowhere To Run". If Gene had submitted the Lyrics for a Kiss album, they would've been great songs. But, on Gene's ego trip solo album, they turned out too pop.

And the solo album that should've been... Eric Carr's "Rockology". All songs he wrote and produced on his own while in Kiss. a thousand times better than the crap that became Crazy Nights, but since Gene and Paul wanted to keep all the money for themselves, they passed over Carr's good songs for their own crap.

I think everyone was wondering what was the deal with KISS after they took off their makeup and went all poppy 20 years ago.
They really lacked bite back then. They became one of the many bands that were influenced by them. All the 80's pop metal bands that credited KISS for inspiring them in the 70's, well, KISS became one of those bands--and it wasn't that great. Kinda good, kinda blah. I liked "Tears Are Falling" and a few others, but generally, it wasn't the best of times. But it probably was a good thing that they replaced Ace and Peter, because they were just jerks who were baked out of their brains on drugs and booze at that point, and were such egomaniacs. And look where THEIR careers went in the 80's...Ace had Frehley's Comet, but it went nowhere. He just crashed a few cars and remained in denial about his alcohol problem, but that's about all.
