This is a rare piece for the true collector of Margaret Mitchell and Gone With the Wind. I am Anne Edwards who wrote MM's biography ("The Road to Tara"), "Vivien Leigh," and the unpublished sequel to GWTW - "Tara, The Continuation of Gone With the Wind." As a gift, back in the 1970's Richard Harwell (editor of Margaret Mitchell's Letters, etc.) presented me with this unique page from the original galley of Gone With the Wind that had been a page in MM's own galley sent to her for editing by her editor. Rick was a good friend of MM's and her husband John Marsh. Against his better judgement he helped MArsh carry out MM's request that all her ms papers be burned. He asked Marsh for some momentos- and this page 397 was among them. It is the scene where Rhett has left her on the road and Scarlett is continuing on with a near-dead horse hoping to find Tara unharmed by the Yankees.It begins "He [the horse]wheezed and started, but he walked so slowly as she turned him into the road..." and ends "She laid the whip on the tired horse's back and tried to urge him on while the waggling wheels rocked them drunkenly from side to side." A number of years ago I had it verified by C.Dickens - rare book and document dealers in Atlanta as being from the original galley proof. Taking into account the age and the small silverfish damage to the page they estimated it as being worth retail value $750 with an accompanying letter from me detailing the page's provenance. I will be happy to include such a letter on my personal stationary and with my signature.Sorry, I have no photo. I tried but am not a photographer and it came out a blur. I am starting the bidding quite low and with n.r. I have recently moved from a large house to a smaller accommodation and do not have room for all my books and memorabilia. Tall, bearded Jack Merivale with his cut-glass Guardee looks is reminiscent of Peter Townsend. He was born in Canada but educated at Rugsby and Oxford. It was while he was at Oxford that he decided to give up studying and take up acting as a full time career studying first with the Old Vic.
WAS HE FAMOUS?
The fact that Merivale, with his looks, has never emerged as a star is probably due to innate shyness in being the son of famous parents.
