2 Fast 2 Furious
If 2001's surprise hit The Fast and the Furious qualified as rip-snorting drive-in fare, awash with cheesy B-movie fun, the inevitable sequel is strictly big-budget megaplex fodder.
2 Fast 2 Furious is splashy, shallow entertainment that delivers most of what its audience expects. Adrenalin-rushing car races and crunchy dialogue almost camouflage a storyline that's free of logic.
The setting moves from L.A. to picturesque, vice-filled Miami. Paul Walker returns as reluctant undercover cop Brian O'Connor, but smug, brawny Vin Diesel has been replaced with singer/model Tyrese, who's almost as brawny as Mr. Diesel and much more carefree. Actors are usually a minor concern in such a high-voltage flick, but Mr. Walker and Tyrese enjoy a warm rapport that makes their boyish bravado appealing.
John Singleton's direction is a mixed blessing. He has fun with the big action scenes without diluting their impact. But, obviously hoping to turn his two leads into instant icons, he photographs them far too worshipfully, and such reverential treatment works against the naturalness of their camaraderie.
Mr. Singleton won Oscar nominations for directing and writing his memorable 1991 debut Boyz N the Hood. So it's sad watching him commit one of mainstream moviemaking's most frequent transgressions, trying to turn semi-names into idols.
Even with Mr. Walker and Tyrese receiving the most flattering angles, lighting and close-ups, the movie's real golden calves are the cars. One hundred and fifty autos go the 2 Fast 2 Furious route, with 15 receiving special attention. These include a Nissan Skyline R-34 and a Mitsubishi Evolution 7, equipped for the film with more gadgets than the average Bondmobile. The movie's vehicles are capable of all sorts of derring-do, even taking a flying leap across an open drawbridge when necessary.
The plot rarely interferes with the action. Mr. Walker's disgraced cop, still being punished for allowing Mr. Diesel to escape in the first movie, gets an opportunity to redeem himself. He must infiltrate the inner circle of rich Miami bad guy Carter Verone (Cole Hauser), whose lucrative import business hides an even more lucrative money-laundering trade. Verone is such a baddie, he grins while supervising a torture sequence that involves a ravenous rodent strategically placed on a poor slob's partly nude body.
For such a dangerous mission, O'Connor chooses onetime buddy Roman Pearce (Tyrese) as his partner. They have some old grudges to settle, but soon they're as tight as the Hardy Boys.
Mr. Walker shows evidence of having a more substantial talent than his surfer-dude appearance indicates, and Tyrese commands the screen with an energy reminiscent of Eddie Murphy's 48 HRS. days.
Mr. Hauser is a smugly despicable bad guy, while recording star Chris "Ludacris" Bridges has sly fun as the mischievous leader of Miami's street-racing subculture.
When not racing, punching or smoldering, Mr. Walker makes meaningful eye contact with Eva Mendes, vibrantly playing an undercover agent who's posing as the nasty millionaire's current squeeze.
The creators of 2 Fast 2 Furious have assumed, probably correctly, that even a trace of subtlety would capsize the movie. Everything, including the Pepsi product placement, is heavy-handed. And that's appropriate for a film with such a truthful title.

Finding Nemo
The latest computer-generated sensation from Pixar Animation Studios (Toy Story, Monsters, Inc.) and Walt Disney Pictures celebrates prickly and powerful paternal bonds with a clownfish named Marlin (Albert Brooks), whose overprotection of his son, Nemo (Alexander Gould), almost leads to disaster.
In other words, all you dads out there – don't even dream of foisting this one off on mom. You're going to want to be there with your little spawn for the tear-jerking father-and-son reunion. And, as in Pixar's previous efforts, the film swims confidently in a cozy, family-friendly G-rating.
