Does anyone know any good older social movies that dealt with topics like racism, abortion, women's rights, homophobia (what was the first movie to talk about homosexuality?), sexuality and teen sexuality, religion and hypocricy, alchoholism, etc.? thankx!

Peyton Place and Imitation of Life were movies that dealt with those types of situations. They both came out in the late 50's, a time when subjects like that were taboo. Very good movies IMO. Lana Turner stars in both films.
To Kill A Mockingbird is another good film that deals with rape and racism.

"Black Like Me," from the early 60s, starring James Whitmore. From the non-fiction book about a man who used a drug to make himself temporarily black to see what it was like. In more recent times (70s?), the experiment was repeated by a woman who wrote about her experiences in the book "Soul Sister."

A few good movies illustrating the devastating effects of alcoholism are:

The Lost Weekend (1945), with Ray Milland and Jane Wyman.

The Days of Wine and Roses (1962), with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick.

Clean and Sober (1988), with Michael Keaton.

When a Man Loves a Woman (1994), with Andy Garcia and Meg Ryan.

Leaving Las Vegas (1995), with Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue.

Splendor in the Grass(1960?) deals with teen angst and sexuality. It gets kind of overblown but it is fun to watch. Young Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty are so beautiful! Love that movie! :eyes:

That was a good movie. Natalie was great cutting off all her hair, I think in a bathtub or something. I haven't seen the movie in years.
Natalie and Warren were beautiful and apparently they thought so too as things heated up offscreen as well.
Her first round of marriage with Robert Wagner ended during this time. Ironically, the yacht on which Natalie spent the last night of her life was named, The Splendor, after that movie.
That was cool on RJ's part. I think they had long put the past behind them at the juncture in their lives.
I was so sad when Natalie died. :(
