NEW YORK (AP) - Luther Vandross remained in critical condition and still needs assistance to breathe, his publicist said Thursday.
The Grammy-winning singer, hospitalized at Weill-Cornell Medical College since his April 16 stroke, has not regained consciousness, publicist Lois Najarian said.
"There's been no radical change is his condition," she told The Associated Press.
Earlier Thursday, Najarian said Vandross' mother had told her that Vandross was now breathing on his own. However, Najarian later said that information was incorrect.
Following his stroke, Vandross underwent a tracheotomy and had a tube inserted in his throat to assist his breathing, in part because he had contracted pneumonia.
Najarian said doctors remain hopeful the 52-year-old singer, whose hits include "Here and Now" and "Superstar," will regain consciousness.

I heard this news on the radio today too. I hope he does wake up. This is very sad news cause he's such a great r&b singer. I love his old music a lot. R&B legend Barry White is also in the hospital in LA due to a kidney disease. I hope he recovers also. Both of their situations aren't looking good. I read that Barry has been in the hospital for awhile too.

weird to see these 2 singers in the hospital at the same time. :(

I just read at yahoo.com that Luther has regained consciousness a little bit. He has been shaking his head & he's opened his eyes for awhile. He's still not able to speak. When he gets out of ICU, he'll be able to speak. His mother has been by his side the whole time playing his own music while he tries to get out of this situation. His band members have also been by his side during this trying time. His new cd is being released today. It's called Dance With My Father. Busta Rhymes, Foxy Brown, Beyonce are some of the guest appearances he has on the cd. He's also on Foxy Brown's upcoming cd which should've been out a long time ago but Def Jam has shelved her cd cause she hasn't came to a agreement yet with the record company & P Diddy. P Diddy is the executive producer of her cd.

I just saw on aol.com that Luther has woke up out of his coma for good. People magazine's website has more information on this. He is doing a whole lot better & he had a full recovery. This is very good news.

Yes, this is good news. I hope he's up and around and singing soon. He seems like a nice man, and he's so talented.

He's been moved up to stable condition. His publicist, or someone, said that they are confident that he will make a recovery.
