COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Country-music station KKCS has suspended two disc jockeys for playing songs by the Dixie Chicks (news - web sites) in violation of a ban imposed after one group member criticized President Bush (news - web sites).

Station manager Jerry Grant said he banned the music after lead singer Natalie Maines (news) told a London audience on March 10: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

The comment was made as war was looming with Iraq (news - web sites), and Maines later apologized. But her remark brought the group a flood of criticism and media attention.

"We pulled their music two months ago, and it's been a difficult decision because how can you ignore the hottest group in country music," Grant said.

He said there has been discussion about whether to reinstate the music, but DJs Dave Moore and Jeff Singer became impatient.

"They made it very clear that they support wholeheartedly the president of the United States. They support wholeheartedly the troops, the military. But they also support the right of free speech," Grant said.

The station has received a couple of hundred calls and 75 percent favored playing the music.

Grant said Moore and Singer will be out for a couple of days.

"I gave them an alternative: stop it now and they'll be on suspension, or they can continue playing them and when they come out of the studio they won't have a job."

The station plans to play the group's music eventually.

"Most stations are starting to play them again anyhow a song here, a song there. I just have a problem with the way this was done. We would have put them in anyhow. But we'd like to do it on our terms," he said.

I have one thing to say about this: It is stupid. I think the media and the radio stations across the U.S. are blowing this thing all out of proportion.

I don't understand why people are all over the Dixie Chicks getting banned for making one comment but R.Kelly is perfectly fine to be played on the radio with all the things he's done?

It has to do with the core audience. I doubt if R. Kelly said somethign about the war, it would have affected his radio play all that much...or if any artist, like Eminem, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie Minogue, etc. had said the same thing, it probably wouldnt have affected them, I dont think...

What bullcrap!!! Aren't people allowed to express their opinions in this country anymore without fear of persecution? And to suspend DJs for playing their music... it's ridiculous. Anyone who plays a Dixie Chicks CD while driving in their car better watch out... they may suspened your license!

All I know is that they still play the Dixie Chicks around here and no one seems to have a problem with it.

Sounds to me like these radio stations are just trying to get their names in the papers. I refuse to believe that anybody can truly get this worked up over what The Dixie Chicks said. If they can, I feel sorry for them.

The radio station I listen to banned the Dixie Chicks for 6 weeks, but they are now back on the air, and nobody here that I know of is complaining.

I think it's stupid if a deejay gets suspended for playing music by the Dixie Chicks. If the pro-war people don't like hearing the music by the Dixie Chicks it doesn't take much to just change the station. It's not like people are forced to listen to their music.

Not only do I think that it's wrong that the Dixie Chicks are banned from most radio stations, I comend the Dixie Chicks for speaking their minds. It's called FREE SPEECH and its part of why America is so great. People are allowed to voice their opinions without fear of persecution. They didn'y have to apologize to anyone for anything they said. It just shows you how little weve moved ahead in the past cetuary.

I would also like to make it clear that I am not a Dixie Chicks fan and that it has nothing to do with a bias I have towards them. In fact to be honest I really can't stand their music.

That's a little ridiculous. I mean, come on people. Just because you don't agree with what they are saying dosent mean their music isnt any good.
