I love music from the late 50s and early 60s. Does anyone else like this era? You could call it the pre-Beatles sound, although it overlapped slightly with the Beatles. I like the Beatles a lot, but they were preceded by a sound that is among my favorite styles of music. Here are some of my favorites from this period:

A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - Bob Dylan (1962)
Apache - Jorgen Ingmann (1961)
Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins (1956)
Cathy's Clown - The Everly Brothers (1960)
Chain Gang - Sam Cooke (1960)
Don't Be Cruel - Elvis (1956)
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright - Bob Dylan (1962)
Easier Said Than Done - The Essex (1963)
Fools Rush In - Rick Nelson (1963)
Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen - Neil Sedaka (1961)
He's a Rebel - The Crystals (1962)
He's So Fine - The Chiffons (1963)
Hush-A-Bye - The Mystics (1959)
I Count the Tears - The Drifters (1961)
I Will Follow Him - Peggy March (1963)
Jim Dandy - LaVerne Baker (1957)
Little Town Flirt - Del Shannon (1962)
Love Potion No. 9 - The Clovers (1959 - Much better than the later, commonly played version by The Searchers)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Gene Pitney (1962)
Maybelline - Chuch Berry (1955)
One Summer Night - The Danleers (1961)
Palisades Park - Freddie Cannon (1962)
Posion Ivy - The Coasters (1959)
Rock and Roll Music - Chuch Berry (1957)
Runaway - Del Shannon (1961)
Shake, Rattle and Roll - Big Joe Turner (1955 - So much better than the later Bill Haley version you always hear)
Stranger on the Shore - Acker Bilk (1962)
Up on the Roof - The Drifters (1963)
Wah-Watusi - The Orlons (1962)
You Belong to Me - The Duprees (1962)

Whatever................. I guess what I really meant that before the Beatles all there was were boring girl groups and Bobby Vinton ,etc. At least the Beatles had an original new sound Pop or not! I was there! Believe me, music in the early 60's sucked! But I defend your right to your opinion. It's just that I hated it!(the music I mean!)

Thanks for answering my post, but I have to disagree that the early 60s were bad, because together with the late 50s, they are my favorite period of music. If I wanted to characterize early 60s music, I might describe it as the style of music that was shown in the movie, "American Graffiti." I will repost those of the above songs that are from the 60s (this time in chronological order) as evidence that there was good music during these years. I like the decades since, but this is my favorite period.

Cathy's Clown - The Everly Brothers (1960)
Chain Gang - Sam Cooke (1960)
Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen - Neil Sedaka (1961)
I Count the Tears - The Drifters (1961)
One Summer Night - The Danleers (1961)
Runaway - Del Shannon (1961)
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall - Bob Dylan (1962)
Apache - Jorgen Ingmann (1961)
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright - Bob Dylan (1962)
He's a Rebel - The Crystals (1962)
Wah-Watusi - The Orlons (1962)
You Belong to Me - The Duprees (1962)
Little Town Flirt - Del Shannon (1962)
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Gene Pitney (1962)
Palisades Park - Freddie Cannon (1962)
Stranger on the Shore - Acker Bilk (1962)
Easier Said Than Done - The Essex (1963)
Fools Rush In - Rick Nelson (1963)
He's So Fine - The Chiffons (1963)

Anybody know any good message boards for oldies? I used to go to the Internet Oldies newsgroup, but there were never more than a handful of posts and 90% of them were ads.

Well, since you mentioned the origins of rock and roll...

Hank Williams Sr. His sound would've been pure rock if he'd had a little mor electric guitar and a drumset.

It was Hank Sr. crossbred with the blues that made Rock.
