The Little Things

Last nights episode was the one about Beaver leaving the water on in the bathtub while Wally was taking care of things on the homefront. What I really like about 'Leave It To Beaver' is the little things. That episode showed, once again, how good at heart the boys are. They both felt bad about not telling their dad what actually happened to the kitchen ceiling so they told him after all even though they didn't have to. Well, the sort of little things that I'm talking about was the scene where Wally was making hamburgers. He dropped one of the burger paddys on the floor. He put it back into the frying pan and then reminded himself by pointing at each paddy which one would be his and which one would be Beavers, lol. Beaver would get the one that dropped onto the floor. ;) No matter how good of a kid Wally was he had that self preservation instinct to give himself the better deal so long as it was no big deal. Funny stuff.

Just an idea but that's the sort of thing to notice and discuss for fun on the board. I'm only mentioning that because of the thread about the board slowing down.

That's what I like about LITB too. The Cleavers, Mayfield, etc. are in general, "better than real. The boys (and parents) are "good at heart," Ward and June are strong but fair, etc. In real life, one may have some elements that are as good, but taken as a whole, the LITB universe is more like a goal to aim for.

I think that little scene is important in two ways. One, it is SO realistic. We've all done it and that's why it's funny. The other thing is it kind of points up how important it was that he did tell Ward at the end. In terms of character, it shows that Wally is not above a little deceit if it didn't hurt anyone. After all, we all know June's floor is spotless and even if it weren't, can you honestly say that Beav wouldn't eat a hamburger because it had a little dirt on it. But later, when it does matter, he confesses. That's real character development. That's why it's such an amazing show.

Speaking of harmless deceptions... We were, weren't we, lol? Beaver and Wally DON'T like to take baths. In one scene they're talking calmly about something while they dampen towells and wash cloths in the bathtub to make it look like they took their baths. Then Wally asks Beaver for some of his 'turtle dirt'. (Beaver had 'turtle dirt' in his coat pocket). Wally tosses the dirt into the tub and says, "That'll leave a ring". They don't have the least tinge of guilt about little deceptions like that. I guess they figure it's 'all fair in love and war' between grownups and kids. A never ending battle.

Some comical irony is added to that scene where they are making it look like they took baths. Beaver is so worried about the note his teacher gave him, and he asks, "Wally, couldn't we just open the note?" Wally says, "Nah, that'd be dishonest," just as they are fluffing their towels with wet hands.

A scene tonight similar to the hamburger scene. Wally and Beaver are eating breakfast, Beaver leaves the table to get the box with the present his mom got for Miss Landers. Wally drank Beavers milk while he was away. But then Beaver and Wally found out that the present was a slip (a most embarrasing situation for Beaver). Beaver calmly said to Wally,"you drank my milk, didn't you." Wally said, "Yeah, but I'm sorry. I didn't know this was going to happen to you, or I woudn't have done it." LOL
