What sitcom characters do you know have that have done drugs, whether it was meant to be funny or serious?

- There was an entire episode of The Simpsons where Homer was smoking marijuana, basically becoming a pothead.

- Alex Keaton of Family Ties was taking amphetimines so he could stay awake to prepare for a big exam.

That's all I can think of right now.

Believe it or not, Mary Richards got hooked on sleeping pills once. The episode was called "Mary's Insomnia" and, IMO, it's one of the best eps. of the series.

On The Golden Girls Rose was addicted to ... nerve pills I think? I've only seen that particular episode once so I'm not quite sure. But the girls stayed up overnight with her one night to try and drain her from the medication.

Patsy and Edina on AbFab are always drinking and/or popping pills.

Paul took some sleeping pills in the birthday flashback episode of "Mad About You".

Gale on my "Gabaldi Bound" series is a recovering drug addict. In the episode "Cookies" she learns that she consumed drug-laced cookies at Brian's family reunion.

I don't think anyone on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" have done drugs yet.

Archie on All In The Family took some uppers where he had to go to the hospital to get it out of his system. That was the episode where everything went wrong at his bar.

Very true. That was a powerful episode. Carroll O'Connor at the end when his addiction blew open when he broke down definitely gave a powerful performance on that one.

On Roseanne Dan, Roseanne and Jackie found some old weed and smoked it. It was hilarious but in the end they decided not to ever do that again.

What about the Simpsons and Family Guy episodes that both contained licking those poisonous toads, sending the person into a phycedellic stupor.

And of course there's Homer, Barneys, and Peter Griffin (Family Guy) who are all raging alcoholics.

Simpsons, Rod and Todd Flanders both get a hold of pixie stix and go insane.

Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel Air OD'd on methamphetamines (I think) that Will kept in his locker.

... and one of the more obvious examples - those nutty kids on that 70's show.

Dave on "Titus" was often followed around by the "marijuana cam"

Brandon on 90210 took some - by accident. Hmm, there are an awful lot, arent there.

Tiffani on California Dreams was addicted to steroids.

Jesse on Saved By The Bell was addicted to caffeine pills.

Those are the only ones I could think of for now.

Accidental consumption of marijuana brownies has happened a ton of times.

I think the older brother on Blossom (not Joey) was a reformed drug user.

Reverend Jim on Taxi was usually on something. There was also the "Latka's Cookies" episode.

Lowell on Wings once got high off of cough syrup.

It's not a sitcom, but the mother on Six Feet Under took her son's ectasy by accident. She was tripping like crazy.

I remember an episode of Home Improvement in which Jill (the mother) found a bag of pot in the backyard and discovered it belonged to Brad. She remembered having smoked at a Led Zeppelin concert when she was younger.

Also, in an episode of The Wonder Years that is rarely aired ("Christmas Party" from the 1991-92 season IIRC), Ed Ermin, a neighbor of the Arnolds, went down to the Arnolds' basement to have a smoke (after originally asking if they had redone their basement).

BTW, Ed only appeared on a handful of episodes.

Rose was taking painkillers for a back injury she had the farm 30 years earlier.

Also (and I don't think I've seen it) -- the red-headed kid who was Arnold's friend on DS -- in the episode with Nancy Reagan co-starring. He says that he's tried things. It was featured on VH1's "I Love the 80s!"

How many shows can you think of that were before 1970/ This i would like to see. I did see a episode where Bud on Father Knows Best tried cigars with either Claude or Kippy. and got sick but It was a one time deal. How Many characters had a ongoing problem?

Im pretty sure that Arnold and Paul smoked dope in the woods in the first season of Wonder Years, and i also remember a really unfunny, moralising episode of Happy Days where Joanie invited a friend to sleep over in the Cunnigham's living room who was a secret user of a generic pill.

Nah! I think they were smoking cigarettes. (Also, if memory serves they smoked underneath the street in a sewer.)

I know this is not a sitcom but on Knot's Landing, Karen Fairgate MacKenzie was addicted to pills, her niece Olivia was on cocaine and weed. On Little House: A New Beginning, Albert was addicted to morphine.

I hate it when sitcoms do "very special" episodes (ie: dramatic). And if it's an NBC show they'll usually play that sappy tune that they commonly play to promote series finales, with a standard v/o going something like "...for the last _seasons/years, you've laughed & you cried..."
