Thank you.

You will find a wide variety of Americans over here. There was a National Geographic article printed years ago about a man who walked from the east coast to the west coast. He was pleased as to the friendliness throughout the country. People offered him money, rides into the next town, and one couple even invited him to their home for dinner and to sleep the night (which he accepted).
Remember, though, "Americans" are really many different people. You know, from Europe, Asia, the Far East, Africa, Central & South America, and people who migrated from Asia thousands of years ago (Indians/Native Americans).
And, of course, the diversity- Southerners, Northerners, New Englanders, the Mid-Westerners, the Great Plains, the Rocky Mtn. region, Pacific Northwest and West Coast (and Alaska & Hawaii).

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. Come on back sometime!

A lot worthwhile. Mild weather, beaches and mountains within 30 miles of each other. In the valleys, nice, wide streets, plenty of shopping areas and entertainment. Many parks (Griffith Park is the biggest park within a city in the entire country). Although it is more crowded than it was 20 or 30 years ago, there is still a lot of undeloped land in the suburbs.

Thank you Peter! The United States could not ask for a better friend and ally in this world than the United Kingdom. The people of the British Isles have excelled in every field you could name - literature, art, music, expolration, science, just to name a few. The United States, and the entire world, have been enriched by the contributions that the U.K. has made throughout history.

Yep, I've seen that website. I live in a valley in the Southwest of the state, so I have mountains to the east and south and mesas and plateaus to the north and west. It's not that bad, but the winds are horrible. Every year from March to May, we get like 40 - 50 MPH winds. It's horrible.

Are those winds cold? I don't mind warm winds, but I don't like cold winds.
Yeah, I like an area where there are mountains near by.

C'mon man, saying Americans are all amazing people is a huge generalisation. America is a vast country and it has more then it's fair share of creeps and b*st*rds.
I went on holiday to Wales a few years ago and everyone I encountered on my trip was very nice and friendly but it doesn't automatically follow that everyone in Wales is really nice and friendly.
America interests me because life there - in general - is so much more different from my own. I have spent my entire life in a crappy little village which has no diversity whatsoever. America is a vast country with so many different kinds of people and so many different environments that I cannot help but be interested in what life there is like.
But I would never be a total kiss-a$$ and say that all Americans are cool. For all it's ethnic diversity, America is one of the most corrupt, violent, predudiced and screwed-up countries in the world.
Thanks to TV and the movies, I think a lot of people in the UK have some kind of romantacised vision of life in the USA but most of it is untrue.

Yeah, really.

Prejudiced? There was a civil war (1861-65) which was fought to free the slaves.
Today, among the highest-paid celebrities are Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jackson (well, he used to be; probably not anymore).
Americans go by the thousands to watch basketball games, of which most of the players are black. I don't see anybody look inside and if they see some black players/fans turn around and leave!
This country also donates far more in foreign aid than any other country in the world.

I see a hint of jealously here. :D

That's because more of them, percentage-wise, commit crimes. If a higher percentage commit crimes, then a higher percentage would be in prison.
A lot of blacks/hispanics started off in the poor sections of America and became successful. They have a much greater opportunity here than in other countries.

Let's make this perfectly clear from the get-go -
I am not jealous of your country!!!!!
I am Scottish and I am proud of that fact so stop acting like a smug b*st*rd!

When I said that America was predudiced I wasn't talking about racism. I am more than willing to concede that racism is far more prolific in Scotland than in America. Although that's not to say that racism doesn't exist in the USA - what about the KKK, I'm glad we dont have nutters like that in Scotland - don't fool yourself.
While I know that racism is a disgusting thing, I am not affected by it cos I am a white person living in a predominantly white area.
However, I am gay. Even though I live in tiny little village, people in general accept me for the way I am. True, I get abuse from some people but if I lived in America - even a large city in America - I would get more abuse for being gay than I do living in my little village.
It doesn't matter what you say, or what the young people on this board say, America is a very homophobic country.
The USA is also a much more violent country. It's totally unheard of for kids in the UK to bring guns to school - yet this happens all the time in America.
Don't try'n tell me that the country in which you live isn't screwed-up!

I can't help but agree with you there. When I was in Germany a few years ago some of the people I met there would watch shows like Baywatch and Beverly Hills 90210 and think that all Americans lived like that.

Then in the 60's, America turned right around and kissed the Black's asses again! That war freed the slaves, but as far as extinguishing racism and being prejudiced? Please! There is quite a malange of racism in America still today, on Blacks, Hispanics, Gays, Whites even.

Now as far as Peter May, he has his own views. How in the hell he found our country to be some kind, benignant country is far past me, because half the pricks in this part of my state are about as racist as you can get. For Christ's sake, I have the KKK practically in my backyard!

Just because America is the most rich, powerful country in the world doesn't mean all of us are "little angels". Please remember that.

Gun Banned England has the one of the worst crime rates.
Form the Telegraph (U.K.) 1-12-02 By David Bamber, Home Affairs Correspondent www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main

"England and Wales have the highest crime rate among the world's leading economies, according to the U.N. People are more likely to be mugged, burgled, robbed or assaulted than in America, Germany, Russia and S. Africa. Only the Dominican Republic, New Zealand and Finland have higher crime rates than England/Wales. According to the comparison of international crime statistics produced by the U.N.'s office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, England/Wales had 9,766 crimes/100,000 people. The United States had 8,517; S. Africa 7,997 and Germany 7,621."

Going by your last post, you seen to be a very polite person. Such a sweetie!

You would have no problem in some big cities- just move to the liberal parts of San Francisco, and you would get no abuse at all. They even have gay parades.

Fine. Whatever.
I know that nothing I say to you will make any difference cos you're obviously one of those smug c**ts who refuses to see all the things that are so wrong and f**ked-up with your country.
I've met so many Americans on here and most of them - whether they are in favour of this war or not - are willing to at least try to see the flip-side of things.
You are blinkered and ignorant of other people's opinions and you are making your country look bad.
You set a bad example and I hope you're f**king proud of yourself cos you're letting your people down.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but Mossop you were my first choice. It's kind of sad to see how a person's kind words can turn into such negativity.
