I was thinking, every decade seemed to have one song that stood out as an anthem. "Stairway to Heaven" was the anthem for the 70's, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the anthem for the 90's.
What would you consider the rock anthem for each decade?:
The 50's:
The 60's:
The 70's:
The 80's:
The 90's:
The 00's:

The 90's is definitely "Smells Like Teen Spirit", and I'd say the 80's would be... well, I don't know. Can't be "Welcome To The Jungle", cause that album by GNR came out in summer of '88, so it's a little late... Maybe "Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC? I don't know. Tough call on the 80's, because there were so many great songs.
The 50's: Rock Around the Clock
The 60's: Hey Jude (not a fan of this song, just stating the truth)
The 70's: Imagine
The 80's: I've never been a fan of 80's music, I'll let others decide
The 90's: Smells Like teen spirit
The 00's: Let's wait until the end of the decade to decide this one

Actually, that album by Guns N' Roses came out in the summer of 1987, when I first went down to L.A. I think a lot of people agree that "You Shook Me All Night Long" is a good choice for an 80's anthem.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is definately the anthem for the 90's. But I really dont know a lot about the other decades, so I'll let those who are experienced and know what they are talking about fill those in, before I make a fool of myself. But I agree on Smells Like Teen Spirit. I know my Nirvana, so I consider myself qualified to call that the anthem of the 90s.

My personal anthems:
The 50's: "Jailhouse Rock" --Elvis
The 60's: "Purple Haze" --Jimi Hendrix, because he was born on my birthday
The 70's: "War Pigs" --Black Sabbath, because this signaled the end of the 60's and reflected the reality of the 70's
The 80's: "Sunday Bloody Sunday" --U2 or:
"Come On Feel the Noise" --Quiet Riot.
U2 was clearly the band of the decade, but I included both these songs because they had
a definite impact on me. While U2 was singing about the threat and horror of war--a big fear looming in everyone's mind 20 years ago, Quiet Riot was one of the bands that ushered in the mainstream acceptance of metal--and gave people something to root for rather than something to fear.
The 90's: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" --Nirvana. Of course everyone chooses that, it's with good reason--you knew that when that song came out, EVERYTHING had changed. Not too many songs captured what was going on, what people were feeling. I'd also say "Even Flow" by Pearl Jam, that was to me, the sound of the 90's. Seattle ruled--for a few years, anyway.
The 00's: "Stupefied" --Disturbed. May be still too early to say, but this song really represents the sound of today. It's warped and heavy.

Yeah, that one is a good choice. Any thing that has that kinda sound could really represent whats going on now.

But at the end of the decade will it represent all ten years? It's still way too early, don't you think?

Oh yeah, it's really too early to determine an anthem for the decade. I was just meaning that type of song has been the style so far.

Actually, yeah, it came out in 1987, but it really topped the charts in 1988. My brother went to see Iron Maiden with Guns N' Roses opening. According to him, it was killer.

Sure, it's way too early. I don't think anyone could say what's gonna be the defining sound or song of the current decade. I'm sure that the "nu-metal" trend may have something to do with it.
But...you never know.
The '50s:
"Johnny B. Goode" - Chuck Berry
The '60s:
"Gimme Shelter" - The Rolling Stones
The '70s:
"Stairway To Heaven" - Led Zeppelin
The '80s:
"Where The Streets Have No Name" - U2
The '90s:
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana
