View Full Version : Best Use of a Song in a Movie?

This question isn't about movie soundtracks. It's when a song just fits perfectly into a movie scene.

My all-time favorite is in Goodfellas when the instrumental section of 'Layla' provides the musical backdrop while the mob hits are carried out. Very effective use of a song in a movie.

Another would be the Rocky theme with Stallone running up those stairs in the original Rocky. Although the song was born from the movie, it has to be included as one of those great musical movie moments.

Yes, "Goodfellas" did a great job of weaving songs into the scenes. Scorcese is very good at that.

Woody Allen is great at using music to punctuate a movie. The opening montage of "Manhattan" set to Gershwin is beautiful to watch.

'Almost Famous' had a nice scene on the bus with everyone singing Tiny Dancer.

'My Best Friend's Wedding' had that cool restaurant scene with the group singing, I Say A Little Prayer For You.

Man, I haaaaaate that movie.

Let's not forget Wayne, Garth and chums singing "Bohemeon Rhapsody" in "Wayne's World." That flick really revived Queen's record sales...

Sorry to be without detail but you'll know what I'm talking about. In Beetlejuice: that song they sang when they were all possessed at the dinner table. Aaao! AaAaAaaaao! .... and I want to go home.

I'm sure Laycee and all the other PM lovers will agree with me on this one but I think the way the Instrumental is playing in the back ground when the Aunts talk about the Owens family history and the Curse fits the scene perfectly

I thought the music in "Requiem for a Dream" was very effective.

"Ever since I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster"
(cut to "Rags to Riches")

Goodfellas was great with the interweaving of songs.

The restaurant scene was excellent also with "And Then He Kissed Me".

And as I typed this I did a search and here are great Scorsese music examples:

Loved that scene. One of the coolest steadicam shots ever.

That Scorcese music link was really interesting, dlemond.

The best examples of this to me are the soundtracks to The Big Chill, Dirty Dancing, and American Graffiti.

Oh yeah, also Forrest Gump. I can't pinpoint just one instance but these movies are my favorites so I have to go with all of them!:)

Great Scorsese link dlemond.

Another good musical movie moment is in 'Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid'....as Paul Newman and Katherine Ross ride a bicycle while "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" plays.

I can't place where each song played in each scene, but Simon and Garfunkel's music completed 'The Graduate'.

Well, all the songs in Chicago were perfect, especially "We Both Reached for the Gun", "Cell Block Tango", and "Nowadays"

But that IS a musical, so in a regular movie I love how they lay that "Ain't no mountain high enough" song in Stepmom.

The scene in the Resevoir Dogs when Vic Vega cuts off the cops ear to the song, "Stuck in the Middle with You."

That certainly left a lasting impression, lol. The symbolism of the song's title was chilling...'Stuck in the Middle with You', with the cop tied to the chair.
I think of that scene everytime I hear that song.

How about the Rocky theme in the first Rocky movie? I think that was a good use of a song in a film, too.

Who can forget Tom Cruise in his tighty whiteys playing air guitar to Bob Seger's 'Old Time Rock n' Roll' in 'Risky Business'.

Unbelievably, this one, I don't think, has been mentioned. The opening music to Saturday Night Fever. John Travolta, ever so cool and cockey, walking down the street to the beat.
