What movie endings didn't stick to the usual Hollywood formula?.....Endings that weren't all wrapped up nicely with a big bow...with that great finale music swelling in the background...Rocky style.
I'll start with Arlington Road. I never saw that one coming. When that bomb went off, I almost fell off my chair.
American History X--I didn't expect him to die.
Seven--How nuts was that head in the box?
Return to Paradise--I really thought Jacquin Phoenix would make it out of prison alive.
Unfaithful--The longshot of Richard Gere and Diane Lane in the car was a brave ending. They essentially left the ending up to the viewers. I have the DVD with the commentaries. They had to fight with studio executives to keep that ending. I saw the alternate ending, and I think they made the right choice.

"What's in the boooooox!"
My roommate and I say that all the time!
The sad thing is, too many films end with a neat "wrapped In a bow" ending. Films that don't end the way we've been conditioned to expect to end are always memorable.
One that springs to mind is a film you have mentioned before, "American Beauty." The ending is a shocker, even though the first line in the film has a character telling you he's going to die at the end. Yet, the climax has you thinking poor ol' Kevin Spacey has found his peace, things are looking up, then..well, you know...

Things to do in Denver when you're Already Dead-I guess the title explained it all, but in the end I expected Andy Garcia to live.
Killing Zoe-Eric Stoltz is saved at the last minute by the French police. However, his crime partner had aids and is shot to hell above him. Leaving you to wonder if Eric contracted the fatal disease.
Carlito's Way- Al Pacino almost made it to that train darn it!
Revenge-Kevin Costner went through all that hell to save his girlfriend, only for her to die in the end!

Jacob's Ladder -
By the end of this movie it is still left up to interpretation as to what the hell just happened.
Chasing Amy -
No sweet resolution, but a brave ending in that the characters know they learned something about themselves and are the better for it. Just their silent acknowledgement of this almost makes it a happy ending. Almost.

The Ring -- I liked how they had you believing one part was the ending, but it wasn't...

Wild Things. That film has more twists than a bag of pretzels. (a line partially borrowed from Leonard Maltin)

The Sixth Sense ending was a jawdropper. Now of course, it's done in every other movie.

I loved the ending of the others!!! great ending.. great twist :D. I didnt like Final Destination all that much.. kind of stupid. I really hate it when they leave movies just hanging there at the end and they dont even make a sequel! GR! LOL

Same here. I loved that movie. If you liked Brokedown Palace, you'd really enjoy Return to Paradise. Similar 'Midnight Run' type of plot....Americans held in a foreign prison.

I think you meant Midnight Express. Midnight Run starred Robert Dinero and Charles Grodin, it was sort of a comedy. ;)

Super Mario Bros.-They left it all open for a sequel but it's been 10 years and we don't have one.
Rat Race-Ok It was KIND of predictable but it was also kind of a strange ending to one of the best movies of all-time IMO.

You're right. I stand corrected. Midnight Run was a fun movie. I remember I saw it at the theater. I see everything Bobby D. is in. :)
Midnight Express was the biggest downer, particulary because it was a true story.

The first movie I thought of was the ORIGINAL Planet Of The Apes. I saw that when it first came out. That was quite an ending!:D

Agreed. Arguably one of the great surprise endings in movie history.
How about Dr. Strangelove. The whole world gets blown up.

I saw that movie a few nights ago and that was such a good film. Stanley Kubrick rocks.

Since Sitcomwriter brought up Rat Race, I just thought of another crazy movie ending. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World had a very crazy ending, with all the guys swinging around and around on a fire truck ladder and getting tossed all over the place.

To live and die in LA had a good ending.
What about the Crying Game? Wasn't the girl really a guy or something?

Wow... no one's said Mulholland Drive? I swear, that was the WEIRDEST movie ever. I sorta get it, but I don't know how to put it in words.... it was just ODD.

I didn't like the ending to He Got Game. Well, I didn't like the whole movie, but I did not get the point of the "throwing the basketball" thing.

Yeah that movie was awful. There's a fine line between avante garde and idiocy...
;)
This is not quite the ending of the movie but... The Cowboys with John Wayne. John Wayne gets killed by the bad guy, Bruce Dern. Three of my inlaws were in that movie.

If anybody saw "Stranger Inside," that ending had one of those "oh dip!" moments.

Right now I'm watching, The War of The Roses, with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
This is your classic dark comedy. The ending where they both hang off the chandelier, then fall to their deaths was different and unexpected.

Chicago....it ends kind of weirdly, you don't really get the feel to what happens to everyone...but I like it just the same

The ending of A Nightmare on Elm Street didnt make sense. Although i love the movie. At the ending Nancy was in the car with some friends and it locked itself and was moving slowly down the street and then Freddy grabbed the mother threw the door.

I so agree. That ending was weird, though. The cover on the top of the car actually came down fast unexpectedly. Their reactions were real.

YES I love the ending to "The War of the roses" In my opinion it couldn't have ended better! and that one shot where he reaches over and they touch, and then in her last breath she knocks his hand over.

Let's not forget the alternate ending to the "Lizzie McGuire Movie" from the DVD. I saw the other ending where Gordo and Lizzie had a kiss and he told her to go back to the party. There are many difference that they digitally created the end of the film. In that different ending, there was a plane flown in the night sky instead of the fireworks and the cheesy "THE END" script, when they were on that plane where Lizzie and Gordo sat still on the plane and she watches the plane window. There is also an animated Lizzie that never quite got finished, where the heck is that color? Finally, Lizzie was smiling as they sailed the plane in the morning sky. This was a backdrop of a plane flown through the clouds. That was the alternate ending to the "Lizzie McGuire Movie".

I thought that the ending of The Rules of Attraction was pretty weird where it just cut off James Van Der Beek speaking and the credits cut backwards. Weird.

Skipped Parts. They explained what happened to all of the characters but they left SO many questions unanswered.I mean, Did Sam & Maurey ever marry? Did Hank and Lydia have a baby? Did Maurey's dad meet someone? Did Casper become governor of NC? Good movie though.
