ABC WILL CELEBRATE ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN A SPECTACULAR,
THREE-HOUR TELECAST FEATURING A STELLAR ARRAY OF STARS
FROM THE PAST AND PRESENT
Hollywood Event Will Bring Alive 50 Years of Television History
The ABC Television Network will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special, three-hour telecast set to air this spring, featuring five decades of television history as seen through the prism of the ABC Television Network. The telecast will include entertaining, dramatic and thrilling moments from all aspects of the past 50 years of ABC television, including news, sports, drama, comedy, music and events.
The event will tape at the Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard on Sunday, March 16, and is set to air in May 2003. Award-winning executive producer Don Mischer (Opening Ceremonies of the Salt Lake Olympics and Barbra Streisand’s Millennium Concert) will create and executive produce the special.
When it began broadcasting on February 9, 1953, ABC was the third national television network to hit the airwaves. However it went on to many firsts: ABC was the first network to air a series starring an African-American; the first network to feature a female news anchor; the first network to air a series starring an openly gay lead; the first network to air a police drama in primetime, and many more. The 50th Anniversary special will commemorate the network’s rich history as a forerunner in the evolution of television programming, making bold, innovative decisions and taking risks.
“Television has an extraordinary impact on our lives, and the role of the ABC Television Network in entertaining and informing the American people over the past half-century is an amazing story that we look forward to sharing with our viewers,” said Alex Wallau, president, ABC Television Network.
“ABC’s role in the history of television is very significant - in sports, news and entertainment, ABC led the way and set the bar very high. We hope to give viewers a chance to relive some of the most memorable moments in television, with humor, poignancy and emotion,” said executive producer Don Mischer.
Celebrating entertainment, sports and news, the following is a brief list of the featured programs and highlights that will be a part of the 50th Anniversary Special:
ABC Primetime:
* ABC's landmark series - from "Ozzie & Harriet" to "Happy Days" to "NYPD Blue"
* Miniseries & movies - "Roots," "The Winds of War," "Brian's Song," etc.

HOPEFULLY they will air some "Mr. Belvedere," and "Growing Pains" episodes.
Praise the lawd! I want to see if they show some classic soap clips, or at least the classic opening credits. I wonder if they will have any classic TV stars there. And if they will have crappy orchestral versions of the TV theme songs. This is, for once, a TV special that DOESN'T include NBC shows!

This special is not going to air 'actual' episodes from past and present ABC series, they are showing clips with past and present stars on hand, like the NBC 75th Anniversary from last year.

Thanks for clearing that up.
I hope they don't forget to even recognize them. During NBC's anniversary many classic sitcoms went without mention. ("Silver Spoons," "Punky Brewster," etc.)

NBC's problem (i think) is that they focused on the new crap and forgot to mention those that brought them to the dance. I hope ABC doesn't do that. Of course ABC has always been a better network.
I just hope they include shows from Aaron Spelling. If they don't, I'll be annoyed. His shows may not have been highly regarded by critics, but the fans loved them.

Hopefully this special will be better than NBC's. They left out a LOT in their anniversary special. They didn't even include their daytime programming. The only good thing about the event was seeing all the stars, and well, the older older clips. They did seem to focus a bit more on the newer stuff.

WTF, I do not see why PC is included. It is the WORST SOAP in ABC's history. PC has done nothing but drag down ABC Daytime and rumor is it is set to be cancelled and an announcement is coming next month.

ABC got their dates wrong.
They went only the air in 1948, they were already 5 years old in 53.
I have read many of trivia books that listed several pre-1953 shows that aired on ABC.
But then again was ABC just a regional network prior to 53?
As far as them being the thired network on the air
what about DuMont? That pre-dated ABC and CBS by quite a few years I believe.

Yeah, I think ABC was just on the eastern coast to start with.
I also hope they don't forget the Stars of my Avatar- (Bewitched, of course!) Heck, before BW, ABC never really had a hit show. Then Bewitched hit #2 in the national ratings and gave ABC the kick-start it needed. :D

It did start out in 1948. However, in 1953 it had a merger with United Paramount Theatres. Appearently it considers this date to be it's start date. It also had a 25th anniversary in 1978.

The late 50s/ early 60s were a good time for ABC with its westerns/American Bandstand/Ozzie & Harriet
I hope they dont leave out stuff like NBC did with their 75th.
I dont think they covered anything daytime ( games, soaps, cartoons, ect..)
BTW, the special that ABC did celebrating their 25th back in 1978.
A friend of mine bought a copy of it online last year. Very interesting to watch today.. among the things you will see...
*Captian Kool and the Kongs ( remember them ? )singing a song about the ABC Saurday morning line-up. Followed by a very strange ( well it was the 70s ) fantasy bit with many of the Sid & Marty Kroft puppets ( Puffinstuff for example )
* Robert Young & Vince Edwards together as Welby and Ben Casey
*Fred McMurray & Kristy McNichol discussing with each other the things families went through from My 3 Sons, up to Family
*The Nelsons gathered around table in the audience. You can also see a close up of Tom Bosley, right next to Marion Ross smoking a cigar.
*Barry Manilow re-wording the lyric to his mid 70s hit "Its A Miracle" to include the titles of all ABC shows.
*A young Jodie Foster talking about the many ABC After school specials they did at the time.
They covered quite a bit of stuff there...very very retro !!!
Only thing ABC left out was those cheesy made for tv films they did so many of back in the 70s.
I would love to see NBC's 50th ( from 1976 ) and CBS's 50th ( from 1978 ) again. On the CBS one, Lucy, Bea Arthur, and I believe George Burns all sang a song together.
That special also was the last time I believe Vivian Vance did tv before she died.

The ABC special sounds cool!! :D
Sure, ABC shows like their westerns, American Bandstand, Ozzie & Harriet, etc. were successful, but not smash-hits, ratings-wise. The highest ratings ABC got before 1964 were in 1955-56 (with "Disneyland", #4) and also at #4, in the 1958-59 season, "The Rifleman". But the rest of the Nielsen ratings charts were basically dominated by CBS and NBC at the time.

ABC a Fourth-Place Network for Two Months
Tuesday April 8 4:05 PM ET
Fox's resurgence over the past few months means ABC is frequently the fourth-place network, and its weakness was evident again last week.
Only two ABC programs "Primetime Thursday" and "The Bachelor" were among the week's 40 most-watched prime-time programs last week, according to Nielsen Media Research.
By contrast, NBC had 16 shows in the top 40, CBS had 15 and Fox had seven, Nielsen said.
ADVERTISEMENTABC has been the fourth-place network for six of the previous eight weeks. It avoided that fate during the weeks of two special events the Academy Awards and Martin Bashir's interview with Michael Jackson.
More importantly for ABC, it was also a distant fourth place last week among viewers aged 18 to 49, the advertiser-friendly demographic that ABC, NBC and Fox most aggressively chase.
By a wide margin, CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" was the week's most popular show, beating Fox's next-best "American Idol" by more than 5 million viewers.
NBC's Katie Couric soared into the top 20 in prime-time with her Sunday night interview with the Central Park jogger.
CBS won the week, averaging 12.1 million viewers (8.0 rating, 13 share). NBC averaged 11.1 million viewers (7.3, 12), and narrowly beat Fox for first place among viewers aged 18 to 49. Fox had 9.3 million viewers (5.6, 9), and ABC 7.5 million (4.9, 8). UPN (2.0, 3) and the WB (1.9, 3), finished in a dead heat with 2.1 million viewers and Pax TV (0.8, 1) had 1 million viewers.
NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 10.8 million viewers (7.6 rating, 15 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" was second, averaging 9.8 million viewers (7.1, 14) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7.3 million (5.3, 10).
A ratings point represents 1,067,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 106.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
For the week of March 31-April 6, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "CSI:" Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 26.4 million; "American Idol-Tuesday," Fox, 21.2 million; "Friends," NBC, 20.8 million; "American Idol-Wednesday," Fox, 20.3 million; "Survivor: Amazon," CBS, 19.8 million; "ER," NBC, 18.9 million; "Everybody Loves Raymond," CBS, 18.6 million; "CSI: Miami," CBS, 17 million; "Law & Order: SVU," NBC, 15.8 million; "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," NBC, 15.6 million.
