View Full Version : At What Point Did Classic Sitcoms Really Start to Become Edited?

Hi All,

I heard that it is/was customary for a show to cut out a minute of footage from its original run when it goes to syndication for the first time. Do all shows do this? I can remember as a kid watching Gilligan's Island, Brady Bunch, and the Munsters, among others and they were shown almost completely uncut. (For a time reference this was about 1975-1979)

In my view, the edits started in the early 80's. But by the mid 80's, cable stations were giving us the same cut up, diced up versions that we see today. Do you agree with the timeline, that the mid 80's-present really were the "slice and dice" era of classic shows?

We know....More commercials=more money, but who does the actually editing of the shows? I have never seen such a poor job of HOW these shows are edited. If you have to chop up a show...take out the evening sunset with no dialoge but leave in the classic lines. TV execs often take out the funniest lines in sitcoms and it's time to get that missing footage restored!

Now my question for the board is. If TV Land/Nick were to show uncut sitcomes but needed to show infomerials between say 4-6 am, to make up for needed revenue to do this, would you support such a position? I would, because TV Land/Nick would get the money that it needs to do this and we could get all sitcomes restored to their original formats.

I would support it, 100% for the reasons you mentioned! Besides, who watches tv between 4-6 am?

I would support infomercials late-night if that would bring back uncut classic tv shows. I mean, I do like being able to record things late at night because it's easier, for some reason, lol. But I would support it.

I would fully-support their informercials in order for them to make money instead of adding more commercials in between their shows, as long as they keep their shows uncut during the day.

TV Land did actually have infomercials and paid programming in the morning a couple of summers ago. They quit doing that, though.

I think that when reruns of shows were being distributed to stations on films they could make their own cuts to them or not cut them at all. Your station obviously chose not to cut them.

Now everything is given to stations on tapes.

With more TV shows, both classic and recent, coming to DVD in an uncut form, I think the way to go is to ask home video divisions of studios to release a show (or shows) you want and buy it when it comes out.
