Sandy Frank is not very well known to the average movie and TV show viewer but he is recognized by many MSTies. He is a producer and executive producer for several TV shows and movies. He was responsible for bringing nine Japanese bombs to the U.S. four of these films were episodes edited into movies. These films were shown in 9 KTMA episodes and 9 Season 3 episodes. "Time of the Apes" consisted of several episodes of "Saru no gundan", a 1970s TV series that was similar to "Planet of the Apes." "Fugitive Alien" and "Star Force: Fugitive Alien II" both are comprised of episodes from a 1978 Japanese TV series called "Suta-urufu." "Mighty Jack", perhaps the most incomprehensible of all these moveis were taken from a 1960s Japanese spy series called "Maitei Jyakku." "Mighty Jack" contains the first and last episodes of the series and leaves us wondering what happened in the episodes in between.
The other Sandy Frank films seen on MST3K are Gamera movies. All the films imported by Sandy Frank are as follows:
Gamera (302) (K05)
Gamera vs. Barugon (304) (K04)
Time of the Apes (306) (K17)
Gamera vs. Gaos (308) (K06)
Fugitive Alien (310) (K12)
Gamera vs. Guiron (312) (K08)
Mighty Jack (314) (K14)
Gamera vs. Zigra (316) (K07)
Star Force: Fugitive Alien II (318) (K03)
Sandy Frank was happy to sell the rights to these movies to Mystery Science Theater 3000. Soon, however, he came to regret it. Frank became the butt of many jokes and was mocked numerous times on the series in the KTMA and Season Three episodes). For example, in the closing host segment in episode 306 - Time of the Apes featured a memorable song called "The Sandy Frank Song" which basically made fun of him. Sandy Frank was not pleased at all. When the rights to those movies expired in 1996, he couldn't have been happier. He refused to sell further rights and said that he would never allow those episodes to be shown again.
Just some useless (or useful) trivia.
