I'm watching this show and cannot believe my eyes. I can't believe a father character is on ABC and is not getting respect from his son or daughters. This show seems like it should be on FOX instead of ABC. Does anybody agree that Paul is not a strong father character? I can't stand to see a FATHER character who keeps getting treated like the family idiot.

I know it's a TV show but it's not everyday a TV Dad is disrespected by his kids on a major network. I didn;t see the tag scene because I couldn't take anymore. Are you trying to say he was treated with respect in the tag?

A sitcom is suppose to be funny, did they treat Al Bundy with respect--no. Yes, the whole family got together at the end, very touching.

Hey Solomon take it easy, it's only a TV Show. Hey have you ever heard of a show called "Married With Children". Compared to Kelly and Bud Bundy, Bridget, Kerry, and Rory are saints. Maybe it has something to do with Katie Segal playing the mom. But at least her characater in this show works all the time, and tries to be nice to her husband. When was Peggy ever nice to Al.

Well if you remember, MArried with children was on Fox which at the time was like UPN

Exactly. SOLOMON has to learn to enjoy television, instead of criticizing every little detail, check every other board for examples, LOL!!

So what do you want the kids to do? Read bibles all day or say "Hi daddy, can we get your slippers?" For your information, the kids DO really like dad, they are teenagers, of course they are going to act like that.

FOX is a major network by the way, it has been since the early-mid 90's, and when I last re-call Married With Children was still on then.

Married with children was on Fox in 87 and fox was no where near major at the time. This is my first time seeing something like this on ABC, CBS, or NBC

Have you heard of Step by Step? The kids fight all the time and hate their step-parents, but of course, they do really like each other. You really need to back your statements.

You said Step parents-i'm talking about real parents. Just give some more examples because i'm not sure if this is the first time it happened.

And the funny part is, that you like Married With Children it seems. I like it too, but the kids on MWC are animals compared to these kids.

I like the show-i'm just shocked at how the father is treated. I do like the show it justs makes me thinks of MWC when the mother helps the kids disrespect the dad.

Al Bundy, Homer Simpson, Bernie Mac, Tim Taylor(on certain occasions), Hayden( from Coach) Hal (Malcom in the Middle) Grampa Simpson, many shows have that, the idea is to be funny and if u take it that serously, don't watch the show. OH ALMOST 4GOT, George from Seinfeld was like that to his parents.

I'm gonna have to agree with Solomon's original post on this one. I felt the same way because ABC has never exactly had a family show with the father portrayed this way. Some of you did give a couple good examples that are exceptions, but as a whole I feel ABC has never quite had something like this where the dad is CONSTANTLY looked at like the family idiot.

And yes they do have "touching family moments" where the kids respect Paul, but "the dad is a goof that the kids blow off" stands out more than "the touching family moments" on this show. ABC has long been known for having their family shows feature those two themes oppositely than on 8 Simple Rules.

And let me just finish this by saying, THAT'S A GOOD THING FOR THIS SHOW and ABC.

Even last night's episode, he was treated like a moron by his wife and kids. No respect at all, especially by the oldest daughter.

I know! I think actually I want to take back what I said with that being a good thing for ABC. I just wanted the last thing I said to be positive since sometimes people will get all pissy when you make a critique. I mean, it's good for the fact that ABC needed a different type sitcom because all the family shows before it were so cookie-cut. This one stands out compared to the ones before because of the blatant disrespect by the kids. If that's good or bad, it's up to you all. Personally, I didn't like the family shows on ABC before. I can sit through this, although lately I've usually watched American Idol.

The show reminds me of married with childdren and that's because i found out the writers for the show also wrote for married with children. Atleast in MWC, Al was viewed as the famly idiot but he still had his insults for Peg. Paul in 8 simple, just takes it all from the wife and kids and never has no come back. Actually I think the Pual character is passive like Jack Tripper.

I think it's kinda funny that paul's treated like that! it makes the show really realistic and authentic because nowadays, families are often like that. bridget and kerry and rory still love their dad, they just fight with him sometimes (well not so much rory). most families are like this, they're not perfect. if they were, i'd be scared!!!

I refused to believe that a Dad in real ife is treated like that in his old home.

It's still disrespectful to call one of your parents a dork-whether you are playing or not. If your Dad allows you to call him a dork then i don't know what to say about him.
