View Full Version : Singers Acting Badly...
By now, most of us have seen the massive crater casued by The gigantic bomb that is "Swept Away," Madonna's upteenth attempt to prove to the world that she can act. What will it take for her to realize that she should stick to music?
What about budding thespians Mariah "Glitter" Carey and Brittany "Crossraods" Spears? Should they settle for the Grammy Awards, and forget the Oscar?

I've read somewhere that every movie star wants to be a singing star and vice versa. That seems to be the case regardless of how big a bomb either is at the other. Madonna, to her credit, did well with Desperately Seeking Susan and won the Golden Globe for Evita (neither of which was my cup of tea, but ok).
We'd probably all be horrified to find out how much money Glitter and Crossroads made from the babysitting money of 12 year old girls around the country. Lest we forget the horror that was Spice World.
On the other side of the coin we have Keneau Reeves, Russell Crowe and several others touring with their bands. At least Glitter and the like are good for a laugh, whether or not it's intended.

Oh, I've heard many negative reviews on Madonna's new flick. Her best were Desperately Seeking Susan and Who's that Girl.

I don't think every singer is cursed who tries to get in the movies. I just think that they have really poor choices in scripts. I think some singers are so psyched to get into film that they will jump at any movie who wants them. Let's remember these performers don't have the stroke in Hollywood that they do in the music world. I think the exception might be Jennifer Lopez. Then again what was the last movie she did well in?

Her last good movie was "Out Of Sight." Which was made before she decided to become "J-Lo" the singer...
She really needs to start reading the scripts before she agrees to be in the movie.

Lopez will be in Kevin Smith's new movie "Jersey Girl" and I'm sure that will be a good flick.
It's a comedy-drama more like his Chasing Amy(excellent movie) than Clerks (which was hysterical).
I'm not a fan of Jennifer Lopez but I am of Smith and I feel she is getting a gift by having the chance to be in a well written movie.

It's an awful trend that will get worse as the singers become less talented(Crossroads, Angel Eyes). In fairness to Madonna, Guy Ritchie stinks as a director. Anyone that puts an act of animal cruelty (Snatch) in their movies should be boycotted.
Now they're putting that trash J-Lo in another movie. On behalf of NJ, no thanks. What part of NJ is she supposed to be from, Newark, Jersey City, Irvington, or Camden?
This weekend the film "Wisegirls" premieres on Cinemax.
Never heard of this movie? It stars Mariah "Glitter" Carey and former talented actress Mira Sorvino.
They say this film is so friggin horrible they didn't even bother to release it in the theaters!
Strike two, Mariah...

the only way Glitter got any people to go to is because it was relesaed around 9/11 and it was a stressful time and people needed something to laugh out loud at...im serious...
J-Lo isnt bad as an actress...and Britney Spears hmmm Crossroads was good, and corney and I would have gone to see it even if she was not in this

Yeah I know I just saw that on my DirecTV guide. It was made in 2002 for crying out loud! I've heard of direct to video but direct to cable has got to be even worse. What the hell happened to the Academy Award winning Mira Sorvino? Who did she piss off?

The NY Daily News gave it 0 stars! I think Will Smith is the only musical performer who made a successful transition to film.

I loved Mira in the Romy and Michelle movie.

Gotta agree. I never thought about Will Smith. Yeah, I would say he is the only one that made a successful transition.
Okay, I have to say this. It's really making my head hurt to keep it in. It's about Jennifer Lopez. Okay, I have to admit she was good in 'Selena'. However, if I hear her say one more time "I'm just a girl from the Bronx", I'm gonna scream. I think she mentions that in just about every interview I've seen her do. ARGH! I feel so much better.

The only reason why she says that is because she wants to have street cred.

I think Jennifer Lopez is talented as both a singer and an actress, and she's gorgeous as well. She may never win an Oscar, but I'm not looking to toss tomatoes at the screen either. I just rented Enough, and she did a good job. Angel Eyes, U-Turn, Selena, etc--she's talented enough for this extreme movie buff.
Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler and Diana Ross are good examples of singers making the transition to acting. Julie Andrews, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Doris Day--I know I'm going back to the dark ages here, but it seems that the stars of yesteryear were more successful at dual careers. I even enjoyed some of Elvis Presley's movies. :)
Dwight Yoakum seems to be one of the lucky ones today. Now Harry Conick Jr. is venturing into acting. I agree that Will Smith is a talented singer and actor.

You are right. I should have mentioned some of the singers who have had great success with movies, and as you posted, there have been quite a few.
I guess it's just a matter of finding the right vehicles for these singers. But seriously, there should be some sort of "three strikes and you're out" rule. Three bombs, and you are prohibited from making movies.

I just saw the movie Wisegirls with Mariah Carrey and I have to admit, it wasn't that bad. Mariah was actually passable as a surly Brooklynite. I was pleasantly surprised.

I know that Mariah's movie, Glitter, did a crash and burn at the box office. I didn't even bother renting the video, and I rent more movies that I care to admit.
Glitter was on HBO a few weeks ago, and I watched it, fully expecting to laugh at it and turn it off. Surprisingly, I didn't hate it. She's no great shakes as an actress, but I liked the story. It held my interest.
Perhaps if she studies acting, she'll get better. She's one hell of a performer on stage.

Please...you can't compare singer/movie/dancer stars of a different age to today. Sure, I love to see Gene Kelly in "Singing In the Rain" but I'd sure as hell not pay $10 these days to see someone indulge their better skills as they did back then. To use stars like Bing Crosby, Doris Day, and Dean Martin to compare to singers starring in today's movies is like asking who would have won in Tyson vs Ali. There is NO comparison. Stars in those days were given vehicles in which to star...most of which were overwhelmed with that star's particular talent (let's face it...would you rather see Sinatra sing or act). They were innocent days in which we weren't jaded with TV and the media and people were just happy to see their favorites in any movie. Those movies were viewed by an innocent public that were starved to see their favorites in any media available, not applicable today. There was no critical issue for a singer like Elvis to appear in a film...his fans went and saw him. These days it is very different, we are looking at dialogue that lasts for several minutes and movies that are expected to gross several million dollars.
It's not a valid comparison....Doris Day to J'Ho. If you're looking to Mariah Carey for movie entertainment, perhaps I could sell you some stock in the Brooklyn Bridge. Then again, weren't you the dolt that thought the Seinfeld AMEX commericals were funny?

Listen, you rude nasty bag of wind. I'll compare anything I want, and I'll state my opinion on anything I please. I don't have to defend anything to you.
You're the buffoon who made a complete fool of yourself on the Seinfeld Board, backpedaling your way out of a strongly worded opinion AFTER I proved you wrong--then kissing my butt for forgiveness. You obviously researched Seinfeld AFTER you posted your original rant. You're a head case.

Elvis: I love him as a musician, but I can't stomach any of his films. Those movies just give a whole other definition to cheese wiz. The same thing happens in just about every one of them. Elvis sings a few songs. A hot looking chick comes into the movie. The chick plays hard to get. Elvis goofs up trying to impress the chick. Elvis sings some more songs. In the end, Elvis gets the chick. It's really hilarious if you think about it. Wait, come to think of it- some of E's movies didn't play upon that formula. Love Me Tender was one of the ones that didn't play on that certain formula. E died during the end of LMT. He certainly couldn't get the woman if he was dead.

Anyone with an IQ of room temperature can tell you had egg all over your face on that Seinfeld thread. There was no humor in your post. First, you simply stated you lose respect for Seinfeld every time you see the ad.Where was the humor in that?
When I asked you to elaborate, you wrote this serious rant about your "issue" with Seinfeld doing ads, blah, blah, blah, with no humor whatsoever.
I came back at you disproving your points. You reply over 2 hours later, after you did your Seinfeld research, and you say you were only kidding. How convenient. Yeah, your post was a real gut buster.
As for the Newhart comparison, I replied to a question someone posted, What sitcom best describes your life?
I said I was pretty. It's not conceited to say you're pretty. I didn't say I was gorgeous. Should I say I'm ugly. I said my husband was funny because he is. Our lives do resemble The Bob Newhart Show. We have a condo very similar to theirs. I'm not a dumb old bag. I'm 44, and I'm smart. Smart enough to know you're off your rocker.

You seem like the dolt, seeing as everytime someone disagrees with you, you call them a name, or try to make a "funny" comment about them. Seems pretty immature to me. Certainly doesn't do any good for your image as an intelligent person, which it looks like you are trying to be. Do us all a favor and lay off the unnecessary insults.

To get to the original topic, it all depends on the vehicles for these singers. Wil Smith was just nominated for an Academy Award this past year for Ali, so anything is possible. If anybody gets a chance, check out Wisegirls and tell me what you think.

Not that I'm defending the Spice Girls, but does their movie count as a demonstration of their acting ablilities?
After all, they were kinda playing themselves, whereas Madonna has tried to be as "unMadonna" as possible when she tries to act...

Ok, there is nothing wrong with Glitter! Sure, it's not the best movie by far, but it's not the worst thing to ever be made. I don't think Glitter should have been Mariah's first movie. She was MUCH better in WiseGirls. Though I don't think she was horrible in Glitter. Yeah, I know there's a lot of people who don't like Glitter, and that's fine because it's their opinion, but many people who put it down never even gave it a chance.

Will Smith is probably the best- I dont even consider him a singer hardly anymore. Mandy Moore has done a really good job in the movies she has done. Britney Spears cant act, but I love Crossroads!! Its a chickflick movie- I like it. I love Jennifer Lopez as J.Lo, but I cant really say about her movies-- never seen any of them, but I wanna see Maid In Manhattan.

Though Jennifer started as an actress. I personally think she is a good actress. Of course this is my opinion. I think she is a better actress than she is a singer. I really don't think she deserved worst actress nominations for Enough and Maid In Manhattan. Especially not for Enough.
