I finally has the grave misfortune of hearing the new Nirvana song on the radio on Thurday night. Everyone was calling in raving about how it was the greatest song ever recorded by the band. The song is "You Know You're Right", the big unreleased tune that was at the center of this stupid legal brouhaha between Courtney LoveHole and Chris Noviselic and Dave Grohl, the remaining members of Nirvana. I can't believe we were set up for a pathetic throwaway out-take that Courtney wants to cash in on. She says a new album will be out by Christmas, and I'm thinking she prolonged this legal wrangling to snag out Christmas bucks--what a craving opportunist.
How would I describe the song? Kurt caterwauls tunelessly on it, the "melody" is thunky and plodding with the obligatory droning distortion and feedback--and yes, in typical Nirvana fashion, the chunky fuzz-parts follow the usual "mellow" poppy first verse part before it kicks in to the prechorus/chorus. There's nothing remarkable about it at all. Just something the band decided to do on its last legs before the heroin-induced stupor of Kurt No-Brain took its final toll on his playing and songwriting "ability". There are good Nirvana songs out there. This ain't one of them.
