Who sings the song "Black Velvet."
A true one hit wonder...
"Black Velvet" was performed by Allanah Myles..
DarleneIllyria

lol- I read the subject line on this post and now I have that song stuck in my head.
Another true 1 hit wonder: Falco- I think he is less known than Allanah. I think Black Velvet was on a few soundtracks while Falco was only known for Rock Me Amadeus.

Ah, I had it backwards. I thought Falco did the German version and then After the Fire translated it and did the cover. This is scary I know all these old one hit wonders names and groups. I was a big 80's music freak in middle school. LOL

Wait, you may be right. Maybe Falco did it first... I thought the After The Fire version came out a few years befroe Falco's version.
I'm confused.
Now I'll never get to sleep!
Good call on After The Fire...I thought that was the name of the group.

Wait, let me see if I got my years straight. I think Der Kommisaar came out before Rock Me Amadeus. I think RMA came out in 1986. I want to say Falco's version of Der Kommissarr came out in either 1982 or 1983. Wait, maybe Falco's came out in '82 and After the Fire's came out in '83.
I'm curious now. I've got to look this up.
DarleneIllyria

I know that Rock Me was on the Falco 3 album, but wasn't sure that Der Kommisaar was on that album. I checked cdnow which wasn't very much help. I found out that Der Kommisaar wasn't on that album, but Falco 3 was released in 86. That still doesn't answer our question though.

Who would have thought that 80's music would be so confusing.
Give Martha Quinn a call, maybe she knows...

You got that right. I'm going to do some more research tonight on it. I asked one of my friends and he only remembered Rock Me Amadeus. He had never heard of either versions of Der Komissaar.
That is an idea all in itself. Martha just might know. ;)

Alright, I was just browsing through some websites trying to find answers to the trivia questions that I've racked my brain for during the last few hours.
Rock Me Amadeus~1986
~Part where I discovered the answer~_________________A bomb killed 2 G.I.'s in a West Berlin disco, Alabama Governor George Wallace said he was retiring, "Police Academy 3" was No. 1 at the box office, Pierce Brosnan was TV's "Remington Steele," and Falco topped the charts with "Rock Me Amadeus." All these happened in April of what year? Source: Dateline Timeline - NBC
B) 1986
__________________________________________________
Der Kommisaar~After the Fire- 1982
Der Kommisaar~ Falco~ 1982
This post gave me an idea on a new post idea for the boards. We've talked about our favorite cds and all that jazz. What about a post for the cds in our collection that would embarass the hell out of us if someone found it we had it.
That might be an interesting conversation. Just might be.
Both versions of Der Komisaar came out in 1982?
A tie?
Well that stinks...
Police Academy 3 was #1 at the box office?
That's just friggin scary...
Thanks for all the research Jenny.
Take the rest of the week off....

I was surprised too about both coming out in 82. I had most of it right during my estimating post. I fried my brain last night thinking of the years those songs came out. I do need a break now. lol
What about another go at it? Who's another really rare one hit wonder? Tracey Ullman- Can't think of the song, but the video is her in a supermarket. Anybody care to estimate what year that one is from?
Cactus Jack

I think those are the right lyrics lol
The Tracey Ullman song was "They Don't Know About Us," I'd say sometime around 1985?
Great one hit wonder song which aired in the early days of MTV
a song by Tom Shilling called "Major Tom."
I was at a bar (big shocker) Sunday night, and I played this song on the jukebox. A confused crowd at the bar wondered what the heck this song was. Finally, one guy at the end of the bar said to me "Dude! I remember this song! Man, are we old!"
Ah, I love New York...

Cool, is that the one with Round control to Major Tom, no thats Space Oddity, but the Major Tom made me think that
Cactus Jack
09-04-2002, 09:33 PM
Space Oddity was David Bowie's first song, I think its his first it goes "Ground control to Major Tom"
No, this is not the David Bowie song, but it does have the same plot - astronaut goes up in space, doesn't come back...
How about this one, another one hit favorite of mine...
"Just A Friend," by Biz Marquee.
YOU...GOT WHAT I NEEEEEEED!!!!!
BUT YOU SAY HE'S JUST A FRIEND
YOU SAY HE'S JUST A FRIEND

Isn't Adam Ant a one hit wonder too? I only recall Goody Two Shoes being their only hit.

I don't remember if this one has been mentioned, and frankly I can't believe we didn't touch base on 'Mickey' by Toni Basil.
Tears for Fears wasn't a 1 hit wonder group were they? I think they had more then one hit song. Whatever happened to them? I heard that Curt and Roland split ways in the early 90's, did they ever get back together for a reunion cd?
Tears For Fears had a few hits here and there...

I think I've heard of Jungle Boy. I have to admit that I do like the 'She's Like the Wind' song. I haven't seen the video for it, but I have seen videos for the other three songs. I must say that the videos were so cheesy! That's a whole other topic it in itself.
Jenny, you'll love this...
I was sitting in a bar tonight (yeah, big shocker) whan I hear on the jukebox what I believe is "Der Kommisar." The lyrics are in some language I cannot comprehend, I say to myself, I can't be that drunk, that I don't know what the singer is saying, Turns out it was the Falco version. The people next to me are just as perplexed.. I tell them there were two versions, the After The Fire version and the Falco/German version.. They gave me a look which I have come to know very well when I talk to strange people in bars...What is this guy talking about?

I remember that Sex and Candy video. The guy was inside the floor or something and this giant spider was crawling around. It was something like that.
You refreshed my memory! Someone on the 'All in the Family' board asked what group Danielle Brisbois was in before they broke up. I think I looked it up on Kazaa or somewhere and posted the answer, but then I forgot it again. Then when you said New Radicals, it brought it all back to me.
I know of another one, but can't remember the name or the group. Here's a snippet of the lyrics "We ain't nothin' but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the discovery channel.'' Anybody recognize that lyric?

I remember that song. It's got Michael Jackson singing backup. What about Herbie Hancock? I think he still works in the music business, but the only video I ever remember seeing from him was that really weird video. Everything was robotic and a pair of legs (just the legs) was walking around the video.
Okay, I think I have one...
In the years after Nirvana proved that flannel goes with everything and Limp Bizkit's attempt to fuse rap and metal - two great tastes that suck together, there were many a Pearl Jam Stone Temple Pilots wannabe rock band clogging the rock radio airwaves; one with probably the dumbest name in recent memory - Spacehog, and their one hit "In The Meantime."
I liked that song.

Have I mentioned this one already? I can't remember if I have. Bif Naked: Just a Moment of Weakness- The lead singer kind of reminded me of Gwen Stefani in a way.

Argh! I remember they played that Fastball song so many times when it first came out. How about The Squirrel Nut Zippers? Is that even the name of the group? I think the name of the song was Zoot Zoot Riot. This was when swing music made a comeback.
What about Paula Cole? I know she had 'Where have all the Cowboys Gone?' I loved that song. Then she had that annoying song 'I don't want to wait.' Remember, it was the Dawson's Creek theme song. That song was over played so much.
I don't think she topped the Cowboys song and the Dawson's theme.
Also, where did Weird Al go? He used to be so big in the 80's and early 90's. The last thing I heard from him that got attention was 'Amish Paradise'.
Edited: I'm curious about that Shawn Mullins guy I listed in my other post. I want to check his name on cdnow. I know the song I remember mentions Sonny and Cher in the lyrics, but I can't remember the name of the song. 'Lullaby' I just saw it on the site. I was starting to crank my brain out trying to think of the name of the song.

Last Wierd Al parody I remember was the one he did about Star Wars, to the theme of "American Pie." I only saw it once about the time "Episode 1" was released, but by then MTV was too preocupied with Limp Bizkit and Brittany to show a good video.

I agree. I've got Gangster's Delight in my head now. Don't you love it when you have a song stuck in your head? lol
I have to post something for my sig come to think of it.
Love the Shatner picture. He's the best!
Another one hit from the late 90's
The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
That song is on every jukebox in every bar in New York - believe me, I've checked!

Thanks for the compliment. :)
I just thought of two more. I think the first song was "Steal my Sunshine" and "Barbie Girl" by Aqua.
I remember one more, but I can't remember the name of the group or the song. I think the group had 3 guys and 1 girl and they were riding in this red car singing. I think it came out about 1996 or 1997.

I'm still trying to find the group that sung that song I mentioned a few posts ago. I did think of two or three one hit wonders.
Rick Astley - I think he's a 1 hit wonder.
Edie Brickell- Can't remember the song. Then I think Edie married another one hit wonder. The guy she married sung "Romeo in Black Jeans.' I'll post again if I find the name of the other group.

I give up on searching for that song. I'll just scratch it off my list. How about this one:
Chumbawamba: Tubthumping- I hated this song so much. Didn't help matters that they played it every 5 minutes.

Was that the "i get Knocked down" song?
If it was, that got way overplayed, especially in movie trailers and such...
In the wimpy power ballad department, there was Extreme, with their wimpy power ballad "More Than Words."
Today's special word boys and girls, is wimpy.
Can you say wimpy? I knew you could...

Yep, that was the song. It was just overplayed all the way around.
How about the song "I Touch Myself"? Can't remember the singer's name, but I think she's a 1 hit wonder.
"I touch Myself" was performed by the group called "Divinals" or something like that. They were a guy band fronted by some vampy chick - shades of "Blondie." They had a few albums, but that was their only hit.
Heard a good one on the radio - hey, if you're getting songs from the radio, then so can I :p
But I forgot who sang it
"Walking In Memphis"
Man, I hated that song...

Rick Astley - Never gonna Give You up (?)
Edie Brikell fronted The New Bohemians, and there one hit was "What I am"
I thought she was married to Paul Simon.
The Romeo In Black Jeans was a song called "No Myth," which I believe was sung by Micheal Penn, who is the younger bro of Sean Penn...
I also remembered; earlier today I heard the song "Black Velvet" on the radio today.
Didn't we talk about that one already?

Ugh, I hated Walking in Memphis too. Whenever they showed the Elvis Pop-up Video, they would play that song last. That makes no sense. If it was an Elvis special, show Elvis songs....argh!

Okay wait, I just thought of another one. I need everybody's brainpower to think of her name. I think she cohosted on the RuPaul show. She was trying to copy Madonna or something. She dressed like her. Had the blonde teased hair. What is her name and is she a one hit wonder :quest:

Maybe its Madonnas sister Hahahahaha I still got it!
Okay, I could have told you I used my massive brain power to pull this bit of trivia out of the air, but I'm big enought to admit I cheated.
I checked the IMDB:
Name - Michele Visage
Co host of The RuPaul Show, and former member of the 80's/90's trio Seduction, who had at least one hit..
Also, she did win a Madonna lookalike contest at 16.
Bet that looks good on a resume...

Ah yes, no need for the IMDB for this one...
This song would have wallowed in relative obscurity if not for Mary Stuart Masterson, who suggested this song for her movie "Bennie And Joon."
Indeed the lead singers were twin brothers, the name of the group was The Proclaimers.

I FOUND THE ANSWER TO THE UNKNOWN SONG!!!!!!!! lol- I'm such a freak. That excited the hell out of me because I remember the name and group of the song I was talking about before. It's OMC with 'How Bizarre'. I started thinking last night and tried to think of it again. I wanted to say it started with an 'O' and it only had 3 letters. I was going to say 'OPP', but that didn't sound right. Then it popped in my head.
I have to admit I'm proud of the few that posted this thread. I know we didn't have a bunch of people participating. We carried this whole conversation for about 7 or 8 pages, and we could still go strong- if we stop and think for awhile. We didn't have a fight (usually an 8 page thread has a fight brewing on page 3).

I can imagine several people thought a fight was breaking out. It would've been a pretty odd fight though. Odd, but yet funny too. It would've been a new trophy for the boards or something. Have "We had a fight over the song Black Velvet" right on the front of it. lol

Ah, I got them mixed up. What song is Terrence known for? Hmmm...
How about Modern English? Did we mention them already? I'll stop the world and melt with you. Anybody remember that song?
Another case for where are they now: Marilyn Manson: What happened to him? I remember in 96 or 97 he was getting a ton of airplay. Has he fell off the side of the earth or something? He's done a few songs lately, but they haven't made such a big impact . Wait, the bad promotion about Columbine killed
his career right?
Terrence Trent D'arby had a song called "Wishing Well," but I think that was waaay back in the eighties.
Suzanne Vega scored an earlier hit with "Luka."
I agree with Jenny, if I had taken part in a multi page fight about the song "Black Velvet," I would think we definatly deserved some kind of trophy, plus a free stay in the mental hospital of our choice...

LOL! I don't think they have a mental hospital in my town. Unless its the top floor of the ordinary hospital. Wait, I forgot. My apologies, it seems as if my whole town should belong in a mental hospital. At least I won't ever be lonely. lol

:roflmao: Isn't that the "If you think I'm sexy" video?
Cheese in its rarest form. lol
Rule of thumb: Pretty much all boy band videos look cheesy after awhile. A person could think it was one of the coolest videos ever made if they liked the group at the time. If you get over the whole obssession and you see one of the boy bands old videos again- its another prime example of cheese in its rarest form.

Carribean Queen #1-1984
Loverboy #2-1985
Suddenly #4-1985
When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going #2-1986
There'll Be Sad Songs To Make You Cry #1-1986
Love Zone #10-1986
Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car #1-1988
you've probably heard those songs, but didn't place them with Billy Ocean, he was pretty big in the soft rock genre in the mid-80's. Both Suddenly and Love Zone were top 10 albums
Greg Kihn is technically a two hit wonder. The Breakup Song is one of the most overplayed songs in the classic rock genre. It sounds nothing like Jeopardy tho, the chorus is "They don't write em like that anymore"

pick up "Absolutely ABC" as soon as possible, an amazing greatest hits album. They had five US hits. When Smokey Sings in 1987 was their highest charting (#5), Be Near Me, How To Be A Millionaire and Look Of Love all went top 20, and Poison Arrow went to #25.

sorry about all those replies, I have had friends tell me that I'm a walking Billboard encyclopedia, so I was just responding to artists that I don't feel are one hit wonders.
The one hit wonder claim that irks me most is Ratt and ROUND AND ROUND. Their first album had at least 4 songs that I'd call "hits", and the followup had 2 more songs I'd consider hits as well, and the other 3 albums before they broke up in 92 had at least one. RAR was the biggie, but their first two albums were huge on MTV and rock radio played it like crazy.
Everyone have a nice evening :)
