View Full Version : Who thinks DVD's are better than VHS
Don't you just love TV shows on DVD's. I like it better than VHS. Today DVD's offers you an entire season of a show at once. And depending on the number of seasons of a TV show you can quickly collect every episode of the show. It use to be 4 episodes per video. To have every of a TV series you have around 25 to 50 videos. Also there was the best of vhs collection. The problem with the best of concept is, what they consider the best episodes of a tv series you may not. We all have our personal favorite episodes that might not be considered classic episodes. DVD rules. What do you think?

I love DVDs. My Hogan's Heroes DVDs are great. The picture is sharp, the colors are bright, and I can go from one ep to another without having to fastforward. But the CH ones still only come 4 to a DVD.

I like DVD, because of the picture and sound, and the fact that its more compact and can store more memory, while VHS tapes can easily get damaged and the tape can get tangled if you don't be careful. I have a few shows on DVD and I really like the quality!

I love DVDs for tv shows, it's just that they need to get more TV Shows out on DVD. ESPECIALLY 80's shows, which they've seemed to be not putting out on DVD much. The Cosby Show, Cheers, Family Ties, Three's Company, The Golden Girls etc. deserve entire DVD sets. :)
Well you will be happy to knowGolden Family Tree they have released the first season of the Cosby Show on DVD. I agree with you on the shows you mentioned. Also they should release Diff'rent Strokes, Bob Newhart show, and Newhart on DVD.

BSW, keep your eyes out for good deals on dvd players. I spotted a hell of a deal at Wal-Mart for dvd players at around $50 to $60. I had a ton of cash from graduation money, and I knew that was a great deal. Nobody had to slap me in the face and jump up and down for me to see that dvd player. It's a good brand too.
Keep looking around Wal-Mart and you may catch a killer deal on the players too.

DVD's are better and by far. As many here have stated, the picture and the sound are great quality. Classic is Better made a good point in saying that VHS tapes can get easily damaged and tangles. That would be the VCR's fault, though.

They have? Like, the whole first season, where I can just go and pick it up at a store like Best Buy or somewhere?

I've personally heard nothing of "The Cosby Show" coming out on DVD. Check out http://www.tvshowsondvd.com and see if a press release was made.
DVDs ARE being released of more 90s programs:
"Once & Again"
"Felicity"
"Sports Night"
& "Andromeda"
I would love to see 80s shows out on DVD, because I think N@N was our last chance to ever see some good 80s shows, at least for another 5 or 10 years (if TVLand ever picks them up).
Anyway, I LOVE DVDs! I have tons of VHS movies, and I'm keeping them all for now, because I'm busy collecting shows on DVD. I will hopefully, eventually, be able to convert all of the shows I've recorded onto DVD... But anyway, I have Beverly Hillbillies, The Lucy Show (both from SAMS CLUB), I Love Lucy, the two Munsters movies. I'm probably going to be buying Jeffersons, All in the Family, Sanford & Son and Mary Tyler Moore this year too. It sure as hell beats recording them off TV, and usually the shows are uncut on DVD (Hillbillies run 25 minutes!) I Love Lucy sadly, ISN'T uncut. I timed it to be 21 minutes (give or take a couple of seconds). AITF is uncut from what I've heard. I love Dark Shadows too, so I may buy some of them. DVDs are amazing, LOL.
I hope they're around for a LOOOOOOOONG time.

A couple days ago at Sam's Club I saw some DVD sets that were released by a company called Classic TV Gems or something like that. They were releasing shows on DVD that are in the public domain I think--like TAGS with the 'changed' opening since the opening is still copyrighted but the rest isn't or something. They had "Bonanza", "The Beverly Hillbillies", and TAGS sets along with 'themed' sets..like western set with "The Lone Ranger", "Rawhide", etc and a mystery set with "Burke's Law", "Dick Tracy", and some others. They retailed there for around $12 for 32 half hour episodes or 16 hour episodes.

DVD's are a 100 times better than VHS! The picture and sound quality are way superior.
Well The Cosby Show is not yet avalable on DVD. It will be soon. Check out Columbia House for more info. But I am not sure if it is the first season or a best of compilation. It probably will be the entire first season since all of Columbia's other shows on DVD are the first season, second season, etc.

Yeah, those are the ones Burke Snow Winters. One odd thing about the Beverly Hillbillies is that the famous theme song is missing, it's just hillbilly music playing. The company must not of been able to use it. I really missed that, LOL. But the picture is 10000% times better than VHS, anyday.

The company that boxed The Beverly Hillbillies is called TV Classics. It has 32 episodes, on 4 dvds, and it retailed around $12. A great price for a 4 dvd set, IMO. Well worth it. Same with THE LUCY SHOW. But the only bad thing about the Hillbillies/Lucy Show DVDs is that the people who distribute these sets, put their logo where a TV channel logo should be, which isn't that bad, but really annoying, LOL.

Hmm I think they also distrubte shows on VHS under the name "Marathon Music & Co.". I have one of their videos and they have the logos on there too. I wasn't sure if they were uncut or not, but since the BH one seems to be uncut I might ask for one of the sets for Christmas.

I haven't timed the Lucy Show yet, but The Beverly Hillbillies are uncut, just missing the longtime loved theme song :(
I love the new DVD collections of TV shows. One box, one season of shows, how could you go wrong?
Movies on DVD I can take or leave...
I saw "Collateral Damage" on DVD the other night.
Crappy movie, but man, the picture and sound was amazing!
Plus, there were tons of extra "behind the scenes" footage on the making of this crappy movie! Oh look! Commentary from the crappy movie's director! And interview with Shwarzennegar on how he played the guy in the crappy movie! Extra crappy scenes too!

DVD is SO much better the problem is not every channel releases every show on DVD.I would have liked some rare shows such as Party Girl,Lush Life,Ladies Man and Maybe This Time>If only they were on HBO! (HBO releases EVERYTHING on DVD!)

::sigh:: I know, it's a shame. It's great that some classics are being released in season sets but there are so much more that deserve to be released, even shows that haven't been seen in ages. It kinda ticks me off to see shows like Sex & The City, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Malcolm in The Middle, and lots of other newer shows being released. I'm like, "WTF? You can STILL see these shows either in first run or in syndication!" UGH!! Oh well, I'll bet more classics will come out eventually :) I currently have a bunch of shows selected at www.tvshowsondvd.com
Anyway, I think DVD is great! The compact size, the clarity, everything. No wonder the season set thing is booming all of a sudden. You can cram 1 whole season in 3 or 4 discs plus extras! I think it's awesome!
So far I have:
All In The Family (1st season, of course)
The Simpsons (seasons 1 and 2)
And I hope to get Sanford & Son soon.
Shows I'd like to see on DVD:
The Facts of Life
Who's The Boss
Alice
Valerie/The Hogan Family
Family Ties
Empty Nest
The Golden Girls
Angie
One Day at a Time
Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman/Forever Fernwood
Mork & Mindy
And so much more

Buffy and S&TC are two of the best shows EVER!!!!!! Like it or not, recent shows like Friends, Buffy, X-Files and Sopranos make money,so why not release them? These shows' success on DVD has paved the way for companies to release older classic shows. I would like a valid explanation why S&TC doesn't belong on DVD. It's not like the show can be edited down for syndication, plus, shows like that, Sopranos, Six Feet Under , Oz and Queer As Folk are all on pay-cable channels like HBOand Showtime.... a ton of people want to see those shows, but not pay $15 a month for it... so they should get the DVD. And like it or not,but Buffy and X-Files are this generations' Star Trek and their fans will pay ANYTHING to have the complete series'. MASH and it's reruns are more played out than all the shows you mentioned, and that's on DVD as well.
I mean, I would love Facts Of Life to hit DVD, but I do realize that a FOL season set will not make the same money that a Buffy or Friends season set

Cosby is supposed to be coming out on DVD as soon as Carsey Werner can find a co. to release it on DVD. Same with Roseanne which is under the same co. :)

Carsey Werner will be make HUGE money when their shows come to DVD.
I think there's hope -- because That 70's Show is coming to DVD (a Carsey Werner show) through 20th Century Fox.
Maybe TCS and Roseanne aren't far behind.
I'd definately pick those up.

You might want to get a computer DVD-ROM drive instead of a standalone DVD player, especially if you/family spend alot of time on the computer. When on sale, they can sometimes be found VERY cheaply - $25 or less w/ software inbox. Beware you need at least a P3 or a hardware decoder card for smooth playback. Hope this helps.

I was in the local Target yesterday, they had one particular brand of dvd players for $39.99. I don't remember what brand it was, but it the box was smaller than typical. One would assume it's not a high quality, built to last model. There are good ones out there that are inexpensive.
