in an early episode, archie mentioned that his parents had visited a year earlier, but later he admitted to dropping out of high school to get a job after his father died. he also talked about a sister, alma, but never mentioned her again. there was also his brother fred. when archies' niece came to visit, archie spoke to fred over the phone and was very friendly, but later they said they hadn't spoken in 25 years. did anyone else notice these things?

I remember the discrepencies with the brother Fred. I thought it was pretty sloppy on the part of the writers. I don't understand why they didn't just make Archie have more than one brother... it seems like an easy solution to me.

I, too, have noticed the inconsistency with Archie and his brother. When he talked to Fred on the phone, there seemed to be no estrangement there. But, many seasons later, Fred shows up at the Bunker house, with a lack of communication and ill will between him and Archie, and they say they haven't communicated, for 29 years

In the 70's and early 80's the writers wrote the shows as if they were all seperate little shows most of the time, there was very little serialization involved. I have seen many shows where they were inconsistent in the stories. I was just a little kid in the 70's and I could see it. I think it was just plain laziness on the writer's parts.
Even with the show Friends, and Monica's being fat and Rachel's nose job. During the first season, I think it was the pilot episode Monica sees Rachel again for the first time since high school, and comments to a friend she's with about Rachel's nose job as though she hadn't seen her with her new nose, but in the episode where Monica tells the Thanksgiving story, where Chandler gets his toe cut off, Rachel had gotten her nose done the same year as Monica lost weight, and Monica saw her with her new nose. That kind of stuff drives me crazy, and there is no excuse for it. So yeah, inconsistencies drive me nuts.
