Maybe it's more than just first episodes, maybe it's television firsts. (First episodes of series would be included, but even more. A television first would be like when Lucy got pregnant on the show when she got prenant with Little Ricky, and the first episode that featured Little Ricky.)

This is a good schedule, but what would be really great would be if TV Land showed the original pilots for these series, instead of just the first episodes. In many cases, the pilots of these series aren't in the syndication package and aren't shown that often (similar to "I Love Lucy"). For instance:

"Happy Days" - the pilot is an episode of "Love, American Style" ("Love and the Happy Days").

"Laverne and Shirley" - show the never-aired 15 minute pilot "presentation" where the girls live in an apartment that looks suspciously like Fonzie's from "Happy Days" (it was filmed on the same set).

"Dick Van Dyke" - show "Head of the Family", the pilot with Carl Reiner as Rob Petrie.

"Leave it to Beaver" - show the "It's a Small World" pilot with different actors playing Ward and Wally.

"Andy Griffith" - show the pilot that aired as part of "The Danny Thomas Show", where Danny stops in Mayberry and meets Andy.

"Rockford Files" - show the original pilot movie with Robert Donley (instead of Noah Beery) as Rocky.

"All in the Family" - show the "Those Were the Days" pilot with different actors as the prototypes for Gloria and Mike. (There's a second pilot with another set of actors as the daughter and son-in-law, but it's believed lost).

"Maude" - show the "Maude" episode of "All in the Family" where Lucy and Archie go to Maude's to attend Carol's wedding (Marcia Rodd plays Carol, instead of Adrienne Barbeau).

"Love Boat" - show any one of the three pilot movies that preceded the series (one of them has an entirely different crew!).

"The Munsters" - there were several 15-minute pilot "presentations" that were made before the series (one of them is in color!).

"Barney Miller" - show the original "Life and Times of Barney Miller" pilot, with Abby Dalton as Barney's wife.

"The Honeymooners" - show some skits from Jackie Gleason's old "Cavalcade of Stars" show, where the skits originated (Disney Channel aired a special comprised of these skits a few years ago).

"Charlie's Angels" - show the original pilot movie.

So you can see, there are a lot of missed opportunities here. Too bad there aren't some hard-core TV addicts running TV Land.

I don't think the Leave It To Beaver pilot has ever been aired, has it? If it has, it has been years, if not 40 years since it did air. Different actors played the parts of Ward and Wally in the pilot, and Eddie Haskell wasn't even a character in the pilot! Just someone similar to Eddie's personality. :)

The "Beaver" pilot didn't air as part of the original series, but for some strange reason, it was included as part of the "New Leave it to Beaver" syndication package. Harry Shearer, from "The Simpsons" and "Spinal Tap", plays the Eddie Haskell prototype. Weird.

I'm going to pick on TV Land some more -- they're showing what they claim is episode #1 of "Mannix" right now, and it's an episode from the second season! Ridiculous.

Sean Snow
01-01-2002, 03:50 PM
Yeah, I noticed that about "Mannix"...but wasn't the 1st season under a different title? I've read that the first season didn't make it into the "Mannix" syndication package because he works for an organization in the first season.

TV Guy
01-01-2002, 08:12 PM
The TV Land site (or some other site) used to claim for a while that the series was called "Intertect" (which was the name of the agency Mannix worked for) during the first season. This is incorrect -- the series was always called "Mannix". I'm sure the reason these episodes weren't originally rerun was because of the format difference, but to me, that's not a good enough reason not to rerun them now, or to not show one of them during "First Episodes Day" on TV Land.

Then again, I don't work for TV Land, so what do I know? :)

snowpeck
01-03-2002, 01:22 AM
The first (the real first) episode was aired on TV Land's launch night, and apparently, the first season was a separate syndication package which TV Land no longer has.

Sean Snow
01-03-2002, 09:54 AM
And they also claim that they have the first episode of "Gunsmoke", but they only show some of the color-hour ones, and not the b&W ones, which some of them I've read are in half hours, and it would be easier to show some of the half-hours to give 'some variety' to the schedule instead of replaying the same episodes over and over again. And if I'm not mistake, they have shown one episode. Same for "Dragnet", I believed that until recently they owned the original "Dragnet (1950s)" and "Dragnet (1960s)"..all they showed was the "Dragnet (1960s)" episodes, but I think they showed a Christmas episode of the original...I don't know if thats right or wrong lol

TV Land at one time had the "My Three Sons" Color Package. If you go on the 'Internet Archive', you can find the old Nick-at-Nite/TV Land site. On it it has "My Three Sons" listed, and it lists the first color episode (In which the oldest son gets married and moves away...Ernie replaced him, I forget his name lol) when in fact the first episode was in black & white w/ Bud and called "Chip Off the Old Block"....I think they then lost the color package because it couldn't have been on that long...maybe a year? And then later acquired the Black & White episodes and showed them before they left the network too.

snowpeck
01-03-2002, 04:15 PM
TV Land has every color episode of Gunsmoke and, in fact, the episode they claimed was the first episode was merely the first COLOR episode. TV Land used to have the Marshall Dillon package of Gunsmoke which was the 6 years worth that were 30 minutes. TV Land never had full rights to 60 minute black and white eps, although 2 or 3 episodes slipped into a Gunsmoke Vertivision a few years ago, which I thankfully have on tape.

Neither Tv Land nor Nick at Nite has ever had rights to the 50s version of Dragnet.

TV Guy
01-03-2002, 05:02 PM
If TV Land doesn't have the rights to the true first episodes of "Mannix" and "Gunsmoke", then, to me, they shouldn't be airing "faux" first episodes as part of their marathon. It seems a little dishonest IMHO.

TV Favorites
01-03-2002, 08:16 PM
LOL...they should have called it the "First episodes that we have" marathon!

Anyway, TV Land never had the rights to the '50's Dragnet. I remember Diane Robina (back when they had "Meet the Veep" on NAN's AOL area) saying that those episodes had fallen into the Public Domain, which made it difficult to air them.

Also, I don't believe TV Land had the rights to the "Intertect" episodes of "Mannix" save for limited rights on the actual first episode.

The Nostalgia Network (which is now Goodlife TV) used to run the 50s "Dragnet" 7 or 8 years ago. I'm sure that once something is in the public domain, it's more difficult to get a decent print of it, which is probably why N@N/TV Land wouldn't air it. I know that there was an "Emergency" episode TV Land wouldn't air because a good copy wasn't available.

Sean Snow

LOL What is public domain?

TV Guy
01-04-2002, 05:18 PM
"Public Domain" means that no one owns the copyright any more, and anyone is free to use it. Copyrights on all kinds of media can be renewed for only so long, and then the works fall into the public domain. Sometimes, the copyright holders don't even bother to renew even once, which happened with the movie "It's a Wonderful Life". It fell into the public domain, and all kinds of stations started showing it, and all kinds of companies began releasing it on video, because they didn't have to pay a dime to secure the rights. Then, a few years ago, Republic Pictures bought the rights to the original story and original music, and began enforcing their copyright. Since almost no one wanted to air the movie without its music or dialogue (Comedy Central did do a spoof with new dialogue and the original images), all the extra airings and VHS copies disappeared.

Some older episodes of series we're familiar with are already in the public domain, for one reason or another. You can buy public domain episodes of "Beverly Hillbillies" and "Andy Griffith" (from various distributors) to name two. The prints are usually pretty lousy (CBS isn't going to give out their good prints for free), and are usually missing the theme music, since the music isn't in the public domain.

The character of Mickey Mouse is going to fall into the public domain within the next 10 years, I believe, and the Looney Tunes characters will start to shortly thereafter. It should be interesting to see what happens.

I'm by no means an expert in this area. Does anyone have more details on how long a copyright can be renewed for (I thought it was around 75 years), and whether the copyright laws differ for movies, books, music, etc.?

TV Guy
01-04-2002, 05:33 PM
The US Copyright office has a good site, http://www.loc.gov/copyright/, which explains how the copyrights work.

Thanks for clearing it up TV Guy! It seems a lot of AIN Shows are under public domain, cause I've been thinking why would they pay money for it if they're not going to air it. I think most of these shows are under Public Domain:

"Love that Bob/The Bob Cummings Show"
"I Married Joan"
"the Many Loves of Dobie Gillis"
"I Spy"
"Life With Elizabeth"

Also, are "The Dick Van Dyke Show" & "The Lucy Show" in public domain? Just wondering! :D

Also, I have another question. At the end of episodes of "Leave it to Beaver" and "Welcome Back Kotter", it doesn't display the logo of the company that owns it (like Paramount at the end of "happy Days" and "Laverne and Shirley" or Columbia-Tristar)...do you know why this is?

No but I do know that Kotter is owned by AOL Time Warner and Beaver by The Program Exchange.

As far as Mannix is concerened, TV land did in fact run the pilot over the last few years and not the one they ran on New Years.
It's really ridiculous that they won't aquire the first season and other episodes here in the US, but yet TV Land Canada is running THE ENTIRE SERIES of Mannix, and uncut I may add.
Also I don't believe they have all the color episodes of Gunsmoke as they seem to skip over some of the same episodes everytime.
I am really dissapointed in TV land between butchering their shows, not running all the episodes and not giving shows a chance. Rememember McHales navy, lasted about 2 months and then yanked. How about Its a living, yanked after 2 weeks.
If TV Land thinks their current lineup is tv satisfaction, they are sadly mistaken.

Last not but not least, running the pilot episode of the A team on New years was great, but c'mon, a 2 part episode and you only run one part that day. How absurd, waking up programming department or hire someone who can do a better job!

At least some episodes of DVD and TLS are in the public domain, and have been released by several different distributors (poor quality, as if someone taped them off a fuzzy UHF station). I don't know if it's just certain episodes, or all episodes, or why the copyrights weren't renewed.

Someone mentioned how "Beaver" is distributed by the Program Exchange. From what I've read, The Program Exchange is a third-party syndicator that major studios (and some small studios) "subcontract" their older series to. Some of the major studios want their in-house syndication arms to only handle newer, "big-ticket" series. For awhile, Paramount was letting the Program Exchange handle "Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley", and "The Brady Bunch". Columbia was letting them handle "Bewitched" and "Jeannie". The contracts with Program Exchange came to an end, and all of these series are now handled again by their original studio.

As I understand it, "Beaver" is still owned by Universal Studios, it's original studio, but they've hired The Program Exchange to handle domestic distribution. And Universal doesn't seem particularly concerned with updated logos on their series. This is definitely unlike Paramount and Columbia, which try to put their updated logos on even older series. Some of the later Beaver episodes still have the "Revue" logo on them -- this is what Universal's TV arm was called in the 50s and 60s, the same way that Columbia's TV arm was called Screen Gems.
