How good/ bad is cable tv where you live?
Kinda strange me asking this since I have a satellite dish but after taking a trip to my hometown and tried to watch tv there, well I'm glad I'm back home with my dish.
Here is how bad cable tv is in my hometown...
*NO TV LAND !!! Not even offered on its so-called digital service. A few years ago there was a rumor of TV Land coming but the cable company decided to put the more popular ( in their opinion ) Home & Garden TV.
*Only one Fox channel. They get 3 CBS, 3 ABC,
4 NBC ( 2 of them right next door to each other ), 2 WB and 2 UPN< and 4 PBS.
*NO MTV !!! Well if you live in city limits MTV is availble but in some parts of the county YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR MTV !!! Just like HBO for example. "due to questionable content" is the reason behind their decision.
*9 local goverment channels. The county alone has 4 and one of them is just to post job openings. Yet the local cable tv company there says they cant add more channels due to lack of channel space.
*this one I can not confirm myself but I have heard from some that the cable there blocks out "Queer as Folk" and "Leap Years"
on Showtime. I heard that on Showtime once these shows start the screen goes dark for 45 minutes ( til the end of the show ).
Heard also they did the same thing with HBO's OZ when it was on. The local newspaper there did bash those shows for being to "filthy" I 'm guessing thats the reason behind the decision.
*other channels they dont offer..
Animal Planet
Food Network
Court TV
Starz/Encore
Boomerang
Biography Channel
Turner Classic Movies
They say these channels dont offer much to the viewer.
Its no wonder why so many folks in my hometown have dropped their cable tv service
for satellite tv.

Our local cable isn't bad, but the only reason they upgraded at all was because of the competition from direct TV and those little sat. dishes. Before then they were AWFUL!
I remember calling and asking them if they were going to get TV Land and they just blew me off! We promptly went out and bought a big dish, and it was money well spent! Back then those days, 10 foot dishes ran in the thousands, so they knew most people wouldn't rush out and buy one. It was sooooooo much fun returning their cable box!!! Now, because of competition, they have to be nice to people...Too funny. When our big dish dies(and it is showing signs of leaving us), we will probably go with the smaller one, but NEVER will I go back to cable.

I got spoiled with my dish. I love being able to press "info" and finding out what the episode is about and being able to move the program guide at the speed I want. It even goes 44 hours in advance. The only annoying thing is if you want to tape something, you have to make sure the receiver is on and you can't flip while taping something. But trust me, it's better than cable!

That just bites!! The digital cable here is great! We get all those channels. With so little choice with your digital...I don't blame ya for going satelite!

I have a dish, but the cable here isn't bad. With basic cable, you get most of the channels you would want, including TVLand, and with digital cable, you get everything.

My family doesn't have cable at home (isn't that considered child abuse?) but I do have it at college and it really isn't too bad. I get Comedy Central, TV Land, USA network, A&E, and quite a few other good channels, including the regular networks.

On our cable service (not digital) we get channels such as:
TV Land
Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite
Game Show Network
Animal Planet
Cartoon Network
Disney Channel
Goodlife TV Network
TBS
TNT
Turner South
and many more!
I think our cable service is alright, but it could be better.

Cable is pretty cool here in the Albany, Schenectady region.
Time Warner rocks!
We get just about everything plus a bunch of music stations, my favorites of that is
Classic R&B, 70's and 80's
I can always find something to watch.
Noggin shows old Electric Company and Sesame Street eps. But not until like 1:30am that kinda sucks.

Cable is awesome where I live. Here in Marquette, there are about 70 channels, and they are adding Pax in December. There's TV Land, Game Show Network, CBS, ABC, NBS, 2 FOX stations, a couple superstations, three sports channels, three news channels, and a bunch other. Couldn't ask for any better than that! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/cool.gif

the apartment has total control of what we watch but they are not bad although we don't have tv land
We've had directv for over a year and it has been great. It offers lots of channels for the price. Once you get used to a clear, sharp picture all the time, you'll never want to go back. We have friends that have digital cable and they always experience channel dropouts and interference. We would have signed up with Time Warner except they never came out to hook us up and could never find us in their computer as a future customer.

I use Sky Digital in the UK a full subcrription is £34.99 per month and you can add an extra box for another £12.00 per month channels are
Sky One
Uk Gold
UK Gold2
Bravo
Uk Living
Hallmark
Paramount Comedey
Sky Movies & Sky movies 2/3/4/5
Sky Moviemax & Sky Moviemax2/3/4/5
Sky Cinema 1/2
Sky Movies Wide Screen
Plus also about 6 sports channels 50 radio channels, lots of Sky Box Office(Movies that you pay for £2.99 per movie)
This is only a small selection there are a lot more channels so i think you get quite good value for your money here in the uk from Sky i don't like cable as it keeps going down and when that happens you cannot even get the terrestrial channels without unplugging all the box from you tv set which is a pain.so hope this answers you question for the UK population
