Larry Matthews on The Dick Van Dyke Show!A really bad actor!

In fairness to the child actors from the 50s and 60s, a lot of the time, their unnatural performances weren't their fault. Candy Moore, who played Chris on "The Lucy Show", has said in interviews that the directors of shows she appeared on always wanted her to say her lines at the top of her voice in a sing-songy voice that she hated. When she tried to speak the lines more naturally, she was told to go back the "regular" way. Larry Matthews and Rusty Hamer ("Make Room for Daddy") spoke their lines the same way, so perhaps they were told to do so as well.

I've also heard talk that it's much more difficult to get child actors to give natural performances when it's a three-camera show shot in front of a studio audience. The Dick Van Dyke, Lucy, and Danny Thomas shows were all shot this way.

How true! I knew there had to be a reason!

Hi Gang: Great question, zack..

zack: I think you made some great picks, only one I would disagree with is Beaver. I think that J.Mathers (as well as all of the other kids on LITBeaver) were very natural and very real, especially compared to child actors that came along later. I didn't like the Beav as much when he hit puberty though. The producers still made him act like a 7 year old. I read that Mathers got the part of Beaver because, after his audition, he was fidgety and asked the producer, "Can I leave now, I have to go to a Cub Scout meeting". And that's when they decided to give him the part of Beaver. I mean, what a genuine kid!
And, even though I liked My 3 Sons as a kid (I didn't start watching it until "Mike" had left and "Ernie" came on board), I was annoyed when I found out that Ernie was adopted in order to maintain the "3 sons" premise. I remember thinking, "how stupid".

factsoflife: Agree with all of your picks except Simpsons. I think those Bart and Lisa are hysterical. Also, re: Different strokes kids...I hated Coleman and Bridges, but D. Plato was too cute for me to hate. But speaking of annoying kids, you forgot to mention several from the Facts of Life. I liked the 4 main girls, but I also remember how annoying (but cute) "Sue Ann" (Julie Piekarski, or something like that) was. And, although I liked Molly Ringwald as a teen ager, I couldn't stand her on FOL. As far as Rosanne, Step by Step, Full House (especially Full House), ALF and Silver Spoons...agree with you 10000% :-)

Newhart Fan - True, Matthews' performances didn't seem natural to me either. However, since he wasn't that prominent a character on the show, I didn't really mind him at all. And TV Guy - I've also heard that about the 3 cameras and live audiences...so perhaps Matthews can be excused...Didn't know about Candy Moore (Chirs on "Lucy Show"), but that's an interesting point too.
Great posts, everybody!

Yes, I must also disagree with the choice of Jerry Mathers as "the Beaver." He was very much a natural actor, and did a marvelous portrayal of his character. Even though it was an unknown disease at the time, Jerry suffered with dyslexia throughout his childhood and his acting career, but could you tell that in his acting? Not at all. He had the title role, so he had to do a good job, otherwise he wouldn't have been chosen to play the Beaver! Sorry on the rant, but I have to defend my favorite character from my favorite show. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have to agree with others on here who say that Ernie, from My Three Sons was also a bad sitcom kid. You can also put Dodie from MTS in that category as well.

The Olsen twins just get on my nerves so bad. Just don't even get me started on them. They just keep getting new shows too. In the words of Forrest Gump, that's all I got to say about that. lol

My least favorite sitcom kids are the following:

Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson ("The Simpsons")
Olivia ("The Cosby Show")
Jeff and Serena Burton (the Olivia-less last two seasons of "The Waltons"--granted, "TW" wasn't a sitcom)
Bud and Kelly Bundy ("Married ... with Children")
Jeff Billings and Chuck Coleman (the last two seasons of "The Wonder Years")
everyone on "Beverly Hills, 90210"
everyone on "The Family Guy"

Cousin Oliver is better than all of these put together IMHO!
