I do! :D I love it because I was teased and bullied at my old school. Does anybody else? I just started this year. It's harder but it's worth it. :p

I'm in college, so I'm not homeschooled. I never was homeschooled before. I kinda wish I was, because I HATED school!!!!!! I was always teased and bullied by the other kids, from kindergarten all the way up until 12th grade. I don't know why kids have to be so mean.
Kids can be mean, but I don't agree with homeschooling. Public schools are very good, and I'm afraid that between homeschooling and private schools, people will have a worse and worse opinion about public education.

Yea, my parents put me in a Catholic school for 11 and a 1/2 years, and they always thought public schols were bad. Well I lived in Chicago, so they were kind of scary. But not too much. But since now that I am in public school in CO, my parents have nothing against public education. And I like it SOO much better. Homeschooling sounds okay, but I always thought that homeschools have a really hard time making friends, but that's just my opinion. I don't mean to be mean.

It really pisses me off when people say this, (BTW EricMatthews, I'm NOT jumping on you,
this is something that a lot of people, think, and I know you said it was your opinion.)
I have
been home-schooled off and on most of my life. I was home-schooled full time
kindergarten-third grade. I had NO trouble making friends, and I was not any more sheltered
then the public school kids. In fact, most of the home-schooled kids I've met were sweeter
and a lot more social then kids who went to normal school.
Most people who say "Kids need to be socialized, ect." don't know ANY home schooled kids.
Or know like one, who happened to be a brat. (Yes, there are those, like any normal schooled kids.)
And as for not agreeing with homeschooling because people are forming bad opinions about public schools,
I think quite frankly that ,PUBLIC SCHOOL SUCKS!
I know some people can't afford private school, but
really, the horrible standardized testing, some of the terrible teachers... Things like that,
made my time in public school MISERABLE. The president seems to just have made things
worse.
Schools have no idea how to deal with learning disabilities, my sister is in regular
school and has one, all they could do for her on the big tests was give her more time, which
to her wasn't the problem.
Because of my acting career, (It was a hobby.. It's now become a
career) I had to miss so much school that I was failing. (Yet I was doing fine when I was
actually there.)I got sent to the principal for being late one day because of an audition, and
basically as punishment had me stare at the wall in his office for THREE HOURS. He had
no clue what to do with me, so instead of letting me take advantage of the time I had there,
he took me out of class to get to know the wall. The wall and I become best friends before
that school year was over.
When I'm in NY I go to the Professorial Children's School, which
is a really awesome place, great teachers, great understanding of time limits because of
auditions or performing, ect. And they are very good about giving kids with learning
problems accommodations.
*Steps down from her soap box.*
The spacing on the post is really off.. Sorry about that.

Yep I do, I went to homeschooling mainly cause I was doing bad in school, my mom doesn't like public schools, and I have this stomach thing where my stomach hurts a lot, sometimes with it hurting real bad, and it would not work going to public schools having this. I do like being homeschooled but I miss seeing my friends everyday at school.

No but I really wish I was because Public schools are just plain awful!
Now I don't know about other people but I strongly believe that public schools are one of the worst places to be in. I want to get homeschooled but my mother thinks I should be around people. I'm depressed and most of the time its because of the people at my school. In fact the thing I have learned most in that horrible place is to HATE and fear people. As for homeschools being bad because its hard to make friends to me it really doesn't matter because I don't have friends at school (Just alot of enemies!).

I wish I could be at homeschool but my mom thinks its wrong. I don't know why, but she does. She just gives a bogus reason and then changes the subject when we're talking.

I think I'd be really dumb if I was homeschooled because all of my teachers are a lot more experienced in what they teach then what my parents are. It would be nice being able to sleep in later but I feel like my teachers can give me a better education. I mean how can you learn Spanish from your parents if they never even took it? Yeah they would get stuff explaining things to them but there would still be stuff they wouldnt understand so therefore I wouldnt either.

Yea, It's just I was never homeschooled, so I really wouldn't know how it is like, but I just thought it was weird because you don't need to change classes or have different teachers for different subjects, and see your friends often. I mean I probably wouldn't like to be homeschooled. Like Jeff said, I don't think my parents would have taught me as much as the teachers I had. Well, they really don't speak English too well either, so It's not like it's an option for me anyway.

Okay, come on that's harsh. Just because you've had some bad experiences you are in absolutely NO POSITION to judge every public school. We aren't picking on homeschooling (although I certainly could) and I'd appreciate a little more respect for a system that has worked for years.

Ok, public schools do NOT suck! Some might, but not all do. My school is the top middle school in Western MA, we are in the International Bacclurate program [sp?] We've got penpals, we are involved in many colleges and programs around here, we have one of the top principals in the city, and last but not least, my school is safe.
I switched to public school because, NO OFFENCE to Catholic schools, but the ones in MA are behind. I do not like Catholic school. I'm doing things I'd be doing in 9th grade now. My math teacher gets all of our homework from 9th grade math books. I was just plain bored in Catholic schools.
It really pisses ME off when people say "Public school sucks". Some people are scared about the kids in the school, others are just plain scared. All these shootings, disturbences in school, these could happen ANYWHERE, in ANY school. I'm sick of people thinking only bad things happen at public school.
You know, I'm sorry if I sounded um, whats the right word.. pissed off, but I hate people who say public schools suck. Some do, but others don't.

Are you a teacher or something? . :)
It may be harsh, but to me it's the truth. I know a lot of
people who think the same way, it works for some people for others it doesn't, but for me and
a ton of my friends, it sucks. The 'system' hasn't worked for years either- It's worked for some people. 8 out of ten I believe was the average that say they did fine. It's great for them. But what about the other two?
Now,
I'm not judging every public school, I never said that all public schools suck, I said TO ME they suck, it's my opinion on them so far. (For all I know, I could go back. I could do great but so far I haven't.) I worded that oddliy, and I'm sorry, it was my way of shorting my post.(It was REALLY long the first time I typed it, and no one wants to read eight page posts.) I was responding to you
saying that people are forming bad opinions on public schools.
People may be, but sometimes it's not un-earned.
I could have worded my first post better, but my temper tends to flare at these kind of things, and I can't seem to get that cynical tone out of my....... Posts.
And please, 'pick on' home schooling. I'd love to hear what you find wrong with it.

Yea, I also went to a Catholic school, and as Karli said, they are WAYYYYY behind. In 8th grade, we barely started to learn geometry, while the public school near us started leaning geometry in 6th grade! And now I go to a public school in CO, and I love it. The academics and programs are way better than those at my old school. I'm not saying all Catholic schools are like that, it's just that MINE was. And about the violence thing, it can happen at any school at anytime. Remember that school shooting that happened right after the one is San Diego? It was in a Catholic school in Ohio. Plus, it was 8th grade, so you see, not all vilence lurks around public school, it's just the people that bring the violence, not the school.

First of all, your school sounds awesome.
I never said all schools suck, like I said in my other post, I should have gone into more detail as to what I meant by, "I think, public school sucks." (Or however I put it.)
I never said anything about school saftey. That was never a fear of mine. And I agree that it could happen in public or private school, obviously "School shootings" can only happen in a school, but your taking a risk that some mad-man will shoot you the second you step out the door.

in the words om my mom: "why pay for homeschooling when u have a GREAT school 5 mins away from our house?" .....
i would LOVE to be homeschooled though..not have to rush for 7 mins to get to the next class, to have guys whistle at you while u walk up stairs, to have to walk up 3 flights of stairs 10 times a freakin' day, and to deal with all the **** that comes free with school. I would LOVE to be homeschooled. seriously if i ever have kids (adopted of course) i would have em homeschooled, if they want...after 5th grade. i think elementary is crucial to a child. then for social he/she would join soccer, softball, baseball or whatever. lol...:D

Thats all normal teen stuff, LoL!
Not being in school never helped me with that.
Now I have to rush to get to my outside of school activeties, I have guys whistle at me during my dance classes, and because I have two houses (Right next to each-other- no one in my family is EVER in the same one as you when you need them) I have to run back and forth between, them. (Not to mention we have the weirdest set of stairs in both of them, that are HARD to walk up.)
My life is still miserble.
;)
I don't know if I'll home-school my kids or not yet. Just depends on where we live and stuff. I would like the freedom of chosing HOW to teach them stuff though.

Okay, look - first of all, I'm warning you, you don't want to get me started on homeschooling. I'm a grown-up here, and I don't want to get all emotional and into big heated arguments, ok?
Just please, accept the fact that there are some very good public schools out there. They don't all suck - which by the way you DID write - and most of them have very good reputations, academically and socially.
In return, I'll acknowledge that for some people, homeschooling is the answer. However, homeschooling doesn't work for everyone just like public schooling doesn't work for everyone. I really don't want to get all emotional about this, so can we come to even ground?

Thats true. My school is suppose to be one of the ten best schools in the state but it still makes me absoulutly miserable. Mostly because of those awful people...but anyway it may be true that a school is good but it doesn't mean the people in it are. The people are the worst of all. For example at my school the teachers are okay (I have had alot worse) but the other kids in my school are just awful little immature brats!

I kinda sorta think that when these people are saying "Public schools suck!" they are talking about their school or a school that they went to. Not all of 'em.
My daughter has an interesting perspective on this subject. She's an elementary school teacher and this year, for personal reasons, she chose to substitute teach rather than teach at one school. She has taught in a relatively underfunded district for the past few years and by subtitute teaching this year she has been exposed to the large differences between the inner workings of the underfunded and the well funded districts. And they can vary greatly. To say "public school sucks" is, as in most cases when one draws a conclusion about the whole based on personal anecdotes, inaccurate, unfair and bound to raise some hackles. As Angelofmusic said, there are terrible teachers, and as she didn't say, there are good teachers. It sounds to me that Angel is tutored rather than taught by her parents which as Tootieismyfav pointed out, how many parents are qualified to teach even if they have the time? This statement from Angel sounds nearly like bigotry, I know it wasn't meant that way but to say "most of the home school kids I've met are sweeter than the kids who went to normal school," is offensive and going a long way to make a point about the 'superiority' of private schooling. I do understand Angel taking offence to people making the assumption that social life suffers for homeschooled kids. I mearly brought the subject of homeschooling up to a friend of mine out of curiosity about his personal experience (he and his wife were homeschooling their kids) and he immediately went on the defence because so many had asked him about the lack of social opportunity for his kids, which was not what I intended to ask about.
According to my daughter and many of the teachers and admistrators that she works with, and what I've learned from my own research, the president and his administration have made things worse, most specifically because of the not well thought out standards testing, or maybe it is well thought out but not in the iterest of the kids or the teachers. The testing is time consuming, takes away from what most teachers had in mind when they decided to become teachers, which was to teach children not only content but how to learn and hopefully to enjoy learning not dread it. To write off the public school system as subpar and beyond redemption is saying that the public doesn't have or is too preoccupied to have a say in what, after all, are public schools. It's up to the public to research and recognize what's working and what isn't and then spread the word. Keep a wary eye on the leaders in the battle for vouchers and privitization. Their supposed good intentions are not always what they claim.
Off topic: What is the point of introducing this topic, and many of the other topics that are raised on the board, with a poll? Polls are sometimes usefull and other times irrelevant.

Just because public school wasn't the right thing for you because of your special circumstances, doesn't mean that it sucks. The number of kids who have an acting career or learning disabilities is an extremely small fraction of the population. I go to a very good public school it has the International Baccleaureate Program too like I think it was Jean Smart Forever said her school had. I think that home-schooled kids would be more sheltered than public school kids because they probably wouldn't get to meet as many people from different backgrounds as they would in a public school. It really depends on the public school and your situation. There are a lot of good public schools out there.

(I didn't mean to sound like I was dareing you to fight with me or anything, really I meant what I said, I would LIKE to hear it.) I've talked to some people who don't believe in home schooling, and really found there reasons interesting.
To other people,
Again, I APOLIGIZE for making it sound like I thought all public schools sucked. I honestly meant that my experiences have, so home-schooling had worked for me, and a lot of my friends. My first post oringinaly had a paragraugh stating what I meant by that but when I read through it, it seemed un-nessesary, and out of place.

But thats the thing, the number of kids with learning disabilties IS NOT that small. It's accaully a very large fraction of the population. So obviously SOMTHING needs to be done for those kids.
Acting careers I'll admit is rare, but there are still kids out there who have them.
Really, my huge peeve with schools right now is the standerdized testing, it's REALLY bad in Florida. I had a middle school right next to me that had a good reputaion, good teachers, good princepal, ect. I had a bunch of friends who went there before the standerdized testing was required and after, and they said it made a huge difference in how much they were learning, because they were pretty much studying for a test all year. And they learned nothing outside of what was on the test. And the pressure was supposedly awful.

I agree. Standardized testing has done nothing but hurt public schools. I really believe in public schools and support them 100% but this policy seriously needs to change.
I think for some kids and some parents, home schooling is the right thing and I see nothing wrong with it. However, it is not the thing for everyone and public schools do a wonderful job for a lot of people.
I personally would not have wanted to be home schooled. I always liked being around a lot of people, seeing my friends everyday, having lots of different teachers etc. But I admit I never had any difficulties and went to great public schools.
The public schools that are struggling need to be given more support and more funding. We can't just write them off as bad schools. I know it sounds corny but educating all children well is important to our society's well-being.
