View Full Version : TV Land is coming to Canada!!!
I've received some big, big news that I discovered from checking around the Web. I wanted to share this with you before but I couldn't access the "Classic TV Hits" site since it stopped working about two weeks ago. Since they seem to share this message board with Sitcoms Online, I thought I couldn't wait any longer so I'll spring the big news on you folks here right now...
As of Sept. TV Land will finally be available in Canada!!!! Yes, the same channel that has become the leader in providing classic TV shows for the past 5 years in the USA will fianlly make its first appearance north of the border around Sept. 3rd. This is part of an unprecedented cable explosion that will see as many as 40 channels make their way in Canadian homes as part of a movement to advance to digital cable technology. So it seems that initially at least TV Land will be seen waaaayy up the dial around channel 123 or something and should be accessed with a special digital cable box.
Not only that, but there will also be a couple of other new channels that will feature classic TV shows, including one simply called Retro, and another named DejaView which will include "The Honeymooners" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" as part of their daily lineup. All this in addition to incumbent channels like PRIME, which should have another strong lineup this fall, and CTS, which will be adding "The Lucy Show" to their schedule this fall.
I'll have lots more once I get more details on what is to come. Keep it here for further info!!!
Do you know if TVLand will be available in other places in the USA?

TV Land Canada premiered in September 2001, as a digital cable service, it brings a range of U.S. and Canadiam shows. It is not the same as TVLand USA because some shows that air here in the USA, are on other cable channels in Canada. (Example Leave it to Beaver, which airs on CTS in Canada and A-Team which airs on DejaView in Canada)

It may be in Canada but not ALL of Canada? I have yet to see it here in Quebec...any words on that?
I agree with the above statements on Canadian TV shows. Those of you who don't get Canadian stations are not missing much.

With the exception of "The Love Boat" which I haven't seen in 15 years, that's a pretty crappy lineup. I hate cable channels that show stuff available elsewhere.
I wouldnt mind watching Toronto's City TV here in WV, they have by far the best newscast of any station I have ever seen.
Just like their 1050 CHUM was the best radio station, though I heard that is now defunct.
As far as Canada stations in the US, I used to get 2 on Direct TV, CBC Newsworld and MuchMusic. Wonder if they are the same feed as they air in Canada or are they seperate like the BBC with their BBC America ( which I assume you cant get in London)?

Will the Canadian version of TVLand show things uncut (the way some, though not all, Canadian cable channels do), or will they show them cut like they do in the U.S. (in which case the Canadian version of TVLand will be as WORTHLESS as the original)?
While TV Land Canada has had a digital license since September, they didn't actually start broadcasting anything meaningful until, I believe last Friday. Before that they just replayed a "coming soon" ad. I noticed Get Smart airing in the evening, and I believe it was the pilot black and white "Mr. Big" episode.
It has to air those Canadian shows because of Canadian content rules. Personally, I wish they had chosen something, *anything*, other than what they got (Beachcombers, Forest Rangers and Check it Out).
Being so new, most of the new digital channels have pretty low subscribership right now. Also, I don't think they've sold that much advertising so most seem to be playing stuff uncut (I think) and the closings without voiceovers. In a few years, when they've become more 'slick', I'll bet they will employ all of the techniques to squeeze out every last advertising dollar.
Enjoy it while it lasts!
