I'm surprised that many compare Gilbert Bates's mannerisms to that of Eddie Haskell. I don't see the comparison at all. Yea, Gilbert got Beaver in his share of messes but he wasn't anywhere NEAR as arrogent and pretentious around people as Eddie was. Eddie was a real jerk as a person, but his phoney "polite" lines are gems!!! (I know so many people that act like this!) "My that's a very pretty dress your wearing Mrs. Cleaver!" Gilbert never said or did anything anywhere NEAR what Eddie did. There were times when Eddie could be downright mean....I thought Gilbert was kind of cool actually.
Larry wasn't mean at all like Eddie, but I think he got Beaver in the most trouble. He made Beaver do a lot of things and could be very manipulative like Eddie. (He made Beaver smoke the pipe....Larry drilled the holes in the garage wall, Larry stole money from his mother's sewing basket and conned Beaver about the spanking machine in Mrs. Rayburn's office He made Beaver take the Go-cart car out into the street and talked Beaver into playing hookey from school. He did some bad stuff, but had the strongest personality of Beaver's friends.
Whitey was ok, but wasn't around often enough to make a strong judgment call about him. (He did get Beaver stuck in the soup bowl though.) I'll bet that if Rusty Stevens (Larry) hadn't moved away by the time that episode was filmed, the producers would have had Larry in that role over Whitey!
Lumpy could be a jerk sometimes, but he was so dumb that it was funny...Just a big stupid Lummox...(It was hilarious that he always called Fred Rutherford, "Daddy!")
I for some reason could not stand Richard, anybody else feel that way? It was like he was always second or third compared to Larry or Gilbert and was just a zero. I don't know why I feel that way, but to me, Richard was just a "wasted charactor"
