Out of all of Beaver's buddies, which one do you think he was truly close with??

1)Larry Mondello
2)Gilbert Bates
3)Richard Rickover
4)Whitey Whitney

It had to be Larry. Gilbert and Richard always seemed to get Beaver in trouble and they never seemed to be sorry for what they did, especially Gilbert. There was always some one "upmanship" between Gilbert and Beaver from the first time Gilbert appeared.

Larry also always got Beaver in trouble, but you could see that he really didn't mean to. He was always sorry for what he did and I think Beaver knew that. Whitey and Beaver weren't as close as Larry and Beaver.

I think you're absolutely right about there always being some sort've competitiveness between Beaver & Gilbert. I think Gilbert, Richard & Whitey we're the younger troublemakers of the show. While Larry was also an instigator I don't think it was necessarily done maliciously. I think Larry craved for Beaver's approval. Geez Louise, now I sound like Dr. Joyce Brothers!!! lol!!

I believe most likely that Larry Mondello will win this poll by a landslide. If Im not mistaken doesnt one episode mention the two being blood brothers. Gilbert was always getting Beaver into some kind of mess and then leaving when the going got tough. Larry would get him into trouble but when it came down to it he would always admit his part in it.

Thanks Sami dg for responding to my poll!! I think you're absolutely right!! Whenever I think of Beaver I think of Larry. Just like when I think of Wally I think of Eddie. They just went together like eggs & bacon. It's only a shame that the character of Larry Mondello only lasted a few years.

No question that it was Larry. Even though he pulled some really bad routines on Beaver at times he showed remorse, and was somehow much more likeable than the the others. I would put Whitey second, he wasn't too bad as a friend. Gilbert and Richard were both real jerks, not friends at all IMO.

I voted for Whitey. The only time he really got Beaver into trouble was when he talked him into climbing into the giant soup bowl. Larry, Gilbert and Richard perfected the line, "Gee, Beaver, I think I hear my mother calling me."

Yes i would say Larry too. In one episode I saw a short time ago had Beaver and Larry being pals. I think it was the blood brothers episode where Beaver is in a group and Larry isn't. Larry makes up a group for Larry is left out. Even June commented that it was nice that Larry and Beaver were such good friends.

I would say Larry, too. The others were far more conniving, and tended to use or make a fool of Beaver for their own gain. But I think Wally was actually Beaver's best friend of all.....

Larry, who else? Gilbert was the creepiest kid Beaver knew. Whitey gets bonus points though for being around for all six seasons. Hey, you left out some friends of Beaver's! Like Harry! And how could you forget Alan? He got to call Don Drysdale with the Beav!:D

Larry was always my favorite chum of Beavers. He was also a very funny character- always eating(And had food in his pockets), whenever he would go to the Cleaver's front door he would always peek in the mail box. And I enjoyed the moments between Larry and his mom.

Of the four choices, I'm going with Larry. I think Beaver's TRUE best friend, however, was his big brother Wally. :D

Me too. He was the nicest of them all. But as far as Beaver goes, I think he was closest to Larry.

Wally's friends were funnier than Beaver's.
I agree. Eddie and Lumpy (and too a lesser degree, Tooey and Chester) were funnier - especially in the later seasons.

LARRY! I loved Larry Mondello. I wish he would have stayed with the show. I loved the episode where Larry spends the night and he and Beaver get into a fight. When he tell's Ward that Beaver hit him in the stomach "right where I almost had my operation" I died laughing. Yes, I loved Larry.

That episode was hilarious - as was Larry himself. Rusty Stevens had great comedic timing, as did almost all the kids on LITB.

I voted for Larry. Though he got Beaver in trouble, I felt he had a did feel bad about it after the outcome and was sincerly sorry, whereas the other boys were just plain mean spirited, especially Gilbert...I hated that kid! I wish Rusty Stevens had been on the entire series as Eddie was for Wally.

I voted for Larry because during the first three seasons he and the Beaver were real tight. Beaver and Gilbert didnt get close until towards the end of the fourth season.

I found i was unable to vote for just one best bud. In Beaver's case, as is normal for many kids growing up, his best bud changed as he grew up and circumstances in his life changed. Clearly Larry was Beaver's best bud in the early season's. When Larry moved away Whitey became Beaver's best bud. Then Gilbert Bates moved in across the street and as Beaver got to know him he evolved into Beaver's best bud. Then Richard Rickover moved to town and Beaver eventually became good friends with him. I have read that in real life Jerry Mathers was best friends with Richard Correll who played Richard Rickover.

You know Marvo, you bring up some valid points about kids changing best friends because of life circumstances and because of that, I would find it hard to vote as well. I never even thought about all that! I voted based on how the others treated him and because I personally liked Larry more then the other guys.

I'd have to go with Larry as well.

Beaver didn't go around being Damon and Pythias with Rickey, Gilbert or Whitey... just with Larry!

Larry would sometimes goad Beaver into doing something he shouldn't have done, but he always felt bad when he got Beaver into trouble.

In the case of Whitey, Richard and Gilbert, they often intentionally got Beaver into big, big trouble... they took full advantage of Beaver's gullibility... Whitey talks him into climbing the billboard... Gilbert tricks Beav into making a face and ruining the class picture... and Richard got Beav into trouble a few times as well... losing his jacket... and didn't Beav take the blame for Richard breaking a window or something?

Anyway, the other guys could be real jerks toward the Beaver, and I've always thought that Larry was the best friend the Beaver ever had. But Marvo is correct... a kid's "best friend" often changes every couple of years or so, as one goes through grade school and meets new kids... old friends move away, new kids arrive... but I never really got the sense that Beaver cherished the friendships of Whitey, Gilbert and Richard in the same way he did with Larry.

Actually it was more like Richard framed Beaver for the broken window. When the policeman caught Richard and asked for his name he said "Beaver Cleaver". And when asked for his home address he gave the Cleaver's address instead. But when the policeman visited the Cleaver home later that evening he recognized immediately that Beaver wasn't the same boy that he caught breaking the window. Richard's scheme eventually fell apart and he was revealed as the real culprit.

he was his brother, and altho brothers are friends and sometimes not!
this is talking about, Friends out side of the family unit.
