View Full Version : The Sitcom Baby Rule

I was up late the other night, trying to go to sleep, and something occurred to me. Whenever a baby is born on a sitcom, it is ALWAYS the opposite sex as the youngest child in the family. This doesn't apply to children born before the show's premiere...only babies born during the run of the show. I desperately tried to think of any shows that broke this rule, and I only came up with one: Alf. (Baby Eric.)

Some examples:
Family Ties - Baby Andrew (and older sis Jennifer)
Boy Meets World - Baby Joshua/Morgan
Seventh Heaven - Babies Sam & David/Ruthie
Growing Pains - Baby Chrissy/Ben
Just The Ten of Us - Baby Melissa/Harvey
Fresh Prince of Bel Air - Baby Nickey/Ashley

Again, the only one I could come up with was Alf. (Baby Eric/Brian)

I also relized something else while I was doing the futile inventory in my head...to my knowledge, The show Bewitched was the only sitcom so far to have TWO babies born during the run of the show. (Tabitha and Adam).

Just thought I'd share this with you all. I SO need to get a life. :)

I recall at least one instance that the new baby was the same sex as the youngest child. On Roseanne her baby was a boy and D J was the next oldest.

You're right! Ok so that's 2...Alf and Roseanne. Can anyone think of anymore. Oh, and btw...as far as Full House goes, I wasn't counting twins when I was thinking of shows that had 2 babies since it was only one pregnancy.

The rule doesn't apply to Cheers either. Carla had a son named Ludlow then she had two twin boys, Elvis and Jesse. She had four kids in the beginning then three more pregnancies, and four more kids
