Wednesday September 28th, 2011
I woke up on Wednesday morning, as with every trip, with a feeling of glee and excitement for the week ahead. I woke up at about 5 AM and talked to Joe online about some of the things TF and I were planning for the day, and some of the nervousness I was feeling about the flights. I think no matter how many times I've been on an airplane, that nervousness will always be there. An hour or so later I texted TF to see if he was awake yet and he texted me back to say he had woken up just then. I called him up like the last trip and we had a nice conversation on the phone for awhile before it was time for me to head to the airport.
The home airport experience was about the same as always and it was a nice cozy morning. The airport here is alot smaller than the other airports I usually have to go through, so it's alot more peaceful and nice. After saying goodbye to my Mom and Grandmother I went through security and headed on my first flight, which was fairly uneventful as I just listened to music on my PSP. Once I got to Boston is when the fear kicked in again, as last time I was in Boston I got lost and almost didn't make my flight in time. That was not the case this time and travel wise, it was actually a perfect day. Much like my last Boston to Chicago trip, I sat next to an Asian man. Unfortunately this guy wasn't as friendly and amusing as the other one, but he seemed nice. I also saw 30 Rock for the first time on the plane, which was a show I had always wanted to check out but just never did for whatever reason. Funny show.
After I got to Chicago I went out to the parking lot to find TF and saw him speeding away in his car, which I attempted to chase after. He called me after this and asked where I was, to which I responded out of breath that he just missed me. A couple of tries later, I finally see him coming up before he parks at the corner and I see him getting yelled at by a lady that worked there saying "YOU CAN'T PARK THERE". TF told her we'd only be a minute, but she would have none of it and I immediately had to throw my bag into the backseat and dive in the car as if I had just robbed a bank and it was my getaway car. Not even getting a chance to say hi to eachother yet, TF sped out of there before the lady got violent and as we drove out of the airport parking lot, we realized that the trunk was wide open. I quickly got out and closed it, got back in, and then we finally exchanged greetings. To make matters worse, the weather couldn't have been worse as it was really rainy and dreary. This really set the mood as we drove in traffic out of the O'Hare airport area for about an hour, seeing lots of depressing looking factories.
The trip improved alot when we decided to go get something to eat and stopped at a Sonic, which was my first time eating there. I had the bacon cheeseburger meal and TF had two hot dogs with some chili hash browns, it was delicious. After that we decided to go find the hotel and check in, looking forward to getting there as we had booked a suite which we had never done before, and we were looking forward to seeing how it was. After we arrived and checked in, we moved all of our stuff into the suite and to say it was massive would be an understatement. The room itself was so big you could have fit 3 of their normal motel rooms in there. Not to mention it had alot of neat things like a fireplace, a hot tub, a refridgerator, and a bunch of couches. Unfortunately we learned that the fireplace didn't work, the fridge froze our soda, and the internet didn't work. Still, we were planning on making the most of the evening.
We decided to go out for a drive and see what the Windy City had to offer for two young men with a car, and as soon as we got into the car, this loud hillbillyish banjo music started to play on the radio. TF's reaction to this music was hilarious. The first thing we ended up finding was this little Halloween shop nearby, where we went in and looked around at the costumes. Very neat place. After that, we drove around the city for a few hours and attempted to find this bowling alley we had found online. We were having some trouble finding it and I at that point didn't even care if we did, as I was having alot of fun just seeing the city, but I quickly learned that when TF sets his sights on a destination, he is a very detirmined and stubborn man. After we finally found the place, we went in and bowled for about an hour. Neither of us were particularly good (though we did have our moments of glory), but it was alot of fun and the atmosphere there was great. After bowling we drove out into the city to attempt to find something unique to eat, not really wanting to settle on McDonalds and Burger King like usual. About 40 McDonalds and 100 Subways later, we gave up and went to McDonalds.
This McDonalds was actually really nice though and nicknamed "The Rock N Roll McDonalds". Apparently it was one of the very first McDonalds to open up and it has this museum set up on the second floor, which unfortunately was closed up because we were at about midnight. As cozy as the place was, the food cost about double what McDonalds usually costs so I was not pleased. To add on to that, you also had to pay just to park at this McDonalds, but fortunately they offered a deal where if you spent 10 dollars on food, they'd give you an hour of free parking. After that we took a little walk around the area and decided to go back to the hotel. After changing into my pajamas and watching an episode of Seinfeld while TF messed with his computer, we decided to call it a night. A very fun, though hectic, first day.
Thursday September 29th, 2011
Thursday started about six hours later. As big and comfortable looking as the bed seemed, it really wasn't all that comfy and I had trouble sleeping in it. I told TF, who had slept on one of the couches the night before, that he could take a turn on the bed tonight and I'd take one of the couches. TF ended up sleeping a bit later than me and it was still raining, so it was a pretty boring and depressing morning in the hotel. After TF woke up, we got ready and decided to set out for a day of adventure. After getting stuck in traffic for awhile again, we decided to go find some place to eat and found a Five Guys, which was one of the highlights of Trip 1 for me. It took about an hour to find a parking space so we could eat there and I was all ready to give up and go find some place else, but TF once again stubbornly insisted that we stick to the plan. In this case, I'm very glad that he did because the food at Five Guys was AMAZING and totally lived up to my fond memories of the place. Before we went in to eat,TF told me to go into this little shop and ask for change for the meter. I went in and asked for change for a dollar, and this stern man looked annoyed and gave it to me. Once I got back out, TF told me that we needed a quarter more. I told him I wasn't about to go back in and ask the stern man for more money, so he ended up going in instead and got yelled at by the stern man, who informed him that he was trying to run a business.
After lunch, we decided to head over to the ice cream shop from Trip 1 that we had very fond memories of. At this point, the sun was starting to come out and it looked like the day was turning around...oh, how we were wrong. As soon as we got to the ice cream shop we found a place to park, then got out before realizing that TF locked the keys in the car. After attempting to get back in, TF said not to worry about it and we may as well go get some ice cream while we were there. We went into the ice cream shop and I had a milk shake while he had an ice cream. The milk shake was delicious and the atmosphere was just as amazing as the last time, with some of the friendliest people you'll ever encounter in your life. A huge contrast from the stern man who had yelled at us just an hour earlier. After leaving the ice cream shop, we went around to a few locksmith shops and attempted to get an estimate on how much it would cost to get the keys out of the car. We were told it could be up to about 160 dollars, which we found ridiculous, and TF just decided to break the window out of the car and get it replaced later instead.
After walking back to the car, TF attempted to kick the window in, which failed. He then grabbed a big rock and attempted to smash it through, which also failed. TF then threw the rock into the window, which failed. Just when we were thinking this car was bulletproof or something, a large Latin/Italian looking man across the street came over and asked if we needed some help before taking out a hammer and smashing the window to pieces. Needless to say, we had alot of people staring at us as they passed by and probably thought we were attempting to break into somebody's car. After cleaning up the glass the best we could, we got back into the car and started heading back towards the hotel. TF was REALLY stressed out about the whole thing and how his family would react to it, and I wasn't in the best of moods myself. Thankfully when he called his Mom and broke the news, she took it very well. The night ended up being pretty good, though it was very low key. We watched about five episodes of the Big Bang Theory in the hotel on TBS, took a trip to the laundry mat to wash TF's clothes, then headed back to the hotel and called it a night.
Friday September 30th, 2011
I woke up on Friday morning on the couch in the hotel, and felt surprisingly rested. Yes, I got a much better night of sleep on the hotel couch than I did on the bed. TF said he didn't find the bed all that comfortable either, but decided to take it again that night when I offered it to him, just because I guess he felt a bed is a bed. I had no issue with sleeping on that comfy couch a second night. We took the car in to a car wash to vacuum out what was left of the glass in the backseat, then decided to head into town once again and see what we could do for the day. Joe was scheduled to arrive at about 4:30 at Midway airport, so we decided to stick close to that area and ended up walking around a few places like Wal Mart just to kill some time. For lunch, we decided once again that we wanted to try something new and when we saw a big sign for Hooter's, we couldn't resist. At the very least, there was comedy involved in us eating at HOOTER'S. We both went in a little awkward, knowing it wouldn't really be all that bad, but still...it was Hooter's. I think I felt a little more comfortable when I noticed a family walking out that had apparently just had their little girl's birthday party inside. A little strange, but ok. After getting seated we met our waitress, Katie, an angel from above. She was very nice and very cute, so we both left her a very generous tip. Sorry if this offends anybody, but we ARE guys.
After leaving Hooter's and checking the area out a little more, we headed for Midway, where we proceeded to stand outside and capture a video of TF looking up into air at an airplane and shouting "DE PLANE! DEEEE PLANE!". We then went into Midway and parked before we headed in and waited for Joe to arrive. At first we decided to wait by the baggage claim like we usually do, but then we decided it might be more fun to go upstairs and watch him arrive. As soon as he did arrive, he proceeded to walk right past us without even noticing us, which I actually joked with TF might happen. We then followed him around for about three minutes to our amusement before he finally turned around and noticed us, then we rushed out into the parking lot to get out before our hour of parking was up. Another long ride through traffic later, we got to the hotel and Joe checked into the room right next to our's, which would have been awesome if we had stayed in the suite the whole weekend but unfortunately, we only had one night left.
We then headed back into the city with a plan to spend the whole night at Navy Pier, a definite highlight of Trip 2. On the way there, it started to rain once again and we got a spooky view of dark clouds over the Willis Tower, which made us think of some evil and dastardly plans of world domination going on up there. After we got to Navy Pier, we quickly realized that most of the rides and attractions were closed because of the weather, including the boat we were planning on going on. This was a major bummer, especially for TF, so we just headed over to the McDonalds to get something to eat and regroup. After eating, we started to feel a little better and decided to take a walk through the inside of Navy Pier to see what was down there. The next hour or so seemed like we were in an endless maze as we started out going from restaurants and shops, to empty rooms, to empty hallways, to places we had no idea what they even were, and at one point we walked into a random door and somehow ended up on the roof of the building. Then to make things even more confusing, we opened another door and ended up in what appeared to be Germany. There was this big German Oktoberfest thing going on with a German band playing polka songs, people dancing, people drinking beer and eating bratwurst, and old men in whacky hats. This was definitely something to see. After hanging out there for awhile, we wandered out into the night and were going to attempt to go on a more expensive boat ride, but unfortunately that boat was now closed also because of the strong wind. When they call Chicago The Windy City, they are DEFINITELY not kidding. The wind was so strong that night that it was practically throwing us around for about ten minutes as I struggled for air and tried to get back in to shelter. At one point, TF and I unwisely stood on top of some bleachers that were moving because of how strong the wind was, and looked down at Joe who appeared to be having a seisure of some kind. I'm guessing this may have played a part in us getting sick later that weekend.
After getting lost attempting to find our way to the parking lot where we parked the car at, we took a nice cozy drive through the city before we went back to the hotel and played PS2 for awhile. Joe and I have been regularly playing WWE games together since about 2005 because of the magic of online play, but this was our chance to get to go back and play some of the older games we never got to play together before. It was really fun. After that, Joe went back to his room and TF and I called it a night, with me once again sleeping on the comfy couch that I would miss greatly the next few days.
Saturday October 1st, 2011
Saturday morning, TF and I woke up and got ready before we checked out and moved our stuff into Joe's room, which was significantly smaller than the suite we had been in for the past three nights. None of us had any idea where we were going to sleep, but we decided to worry about that later and headed out for the first day of SHIMMER Wrestling. I was alot more well rested for this show than I was for either of the days on trip 2, so I enjoyed it alot. Seven or more hours of wrestling is a LONG time to be sitting down for so long and it can be easy to burn out at points, but they REALLY know how to put on a great wrestling show and make it worth it. If I were sitting there for seven hours watching WWE or TNA, I'd probably want to end my life before the time was over. I got to talk to Jessie McKay again, my favorite there who I was wearing a shirt of, and she said "F***ing awesome shirt" as I walked up and gave me a high five. This amused me. I also got to meet Madison Rayne from TNA, who used to be a regular iin SHIMMER but hadn't been around in quite awhile, so it was a surprise. After the show, we attempted to find the afterparty location which was changed not once but twice. Unfortunately the very cozy club from the first two trips went out of business, so they had to go somewhere else. The deal with the first place they changed it to I guess fell through, so last minute they ended up changing it to some other pizza place in town. TF was NOT happy about having to find this place after printing out directions for the other place.
Once we got there it was REALLY crowded and I was starting to get flashbacks of the first night of the afterparty in Trip 1 where I felt miserable and wanted to get out of there. I'm by no means a claustrophic man, but when a room is so full of people that you're struggling just to find a place to stand, it can make you feel quite tense. Thankfully, we ended up finding a back room where we sat down at a table and the night got alot cozier. Jessie McKay, Nicole Matthews, and a few other of our favorites from SHIMMER sat at a table behind us which was also fun. Joe wasn't hungry so TF and me decided to try the pizza and hoped that it would not have the same effect on us as the last afterparty pizza we tried, which thankfully it didn't. I thought the pizza was alright but honestly, it was far from the best I had ever had and TF liked it alot better than I did. The crust was kind of burned which I didn't like, and TF informed me that that was the way it was supposed to be. They also baked the cheese and other toppings into the pizza, and as a man who normally likes to take the cheese off, this made me sad. Still though, we had a really fun time there and a really fun day overall. After we left, we headed back to the hotel and figured out our sleeping situation. Joe and TF shared a bed once again because it was rather large, and at one point apparently TF in his sleep tried to cuddle up next to Joe, much to Joe's horror. As awkward as that was, I'm sure it was a better night of sleep for them than it was for me on the floor. TF brought some extra blankets which helped pad the floor, but even with them, it was still a very hard floor and I had a very hard time getting comfortable. It was then that I vowed that after this trip was over, I would never sleep on another floor again for as long as I live.
Sunday October 2nd, 2011
After waking up multiple times in the night, I got about maybe five hours total of sleep. I woke up at about 8 AM feeling sore and not all that rested, and the guys woke up not all that long after. Despite my crappy night of sleep, it was a fairly cozy morning until TF came running out of the bathroom yelling that the toilet was overflowing. Joe and I, with horror in our eyes, witnessed as water began flooding out of the bathroom and we scrambled to figure out what to do. In the face of tragedy, we all began to turn on eachother as we yelled for one of the others to go out to the lobby to tell them what was happening. TF, who later accused me of cowering because I didn't want to go out in my pajamas, took off running across the street so he wouldn't get in trouble. Joe then took one for the team and ran out to the lobby to tell them, while I stood and continued to watch the toilet overflow until three minutes or so later I looked out the window and saw Joe running across the hotel parking lot with a toilet plunger. I have to admit, I laughed insanely hard at this. After Joe ran back in, TF ran in behind him and attempted to plunge the toilet. Apparently when Joe told the person at the front desk what was happening, all they did was give him a plunger and told him we were on our own. We finally got the toilet to stop overflowing, but at that point, the damage was done and our room was already covered in water. To make matters worse, apparently the water had leaked down into the hotel handy man's room below us and a minute or so later the handy man, a large Hispanic man, ran up the stairs and looked at TF with his arms open before shouting "WHAT DID YOU DO, MAN?!?!". TF once again cowered and said he was just visiting before he ran out and the man came in and yelled at me and Joe for making his life miserable. Joe also comically turned on me and pointed at me, basically saying that I did it. The hispanic man looked at me with a look of hatred, told us not to flush the toilet again, and stormed out before Joe looked like he was going to throw up because he was already catching a cold, and the stress of this made him feel miserable.
After things calmed down, I headed out for some lunch at the Burger King to calm down myself and had a Whopper meal as "My Baby Takes The Morning Train" played. Very cozy moment. After lunch, I headed back to the hotel and we headed out for day two of SHIMMER. Thankfully at this point, Joe was starting to feel better. Since we could only afford one front row ticket, Joe and I took turns sitting up front and I let him have the first half today as I had the first half the day earlier. The day before I was really into the show and excited when I sat in the front row and was a little underwhelmed when I went from that to the second row, but I didn't mind sitting in the second row at all this day because TF and I had nearly the whole aisle to ourselves and alot of room. TF seemed tired as usual, but came alive for some matches and moments, especially ones involving Britani Knight who is apparently going to WWE soon. I was tired myself, but it didn't stop me from having a great time. At intermission, I went to get a picture of Nicole Matthews. I was only going to buy one, but she didn't have change and asked if I wanted to, so I just said why not and took two. The tapings ended up ending with an insanely awesome Cheerleader Melissa-Madison Eagles title match that went all over and through the crowd, sending both TF and Joe running for their lives at one point. Melissa ended up winning the title, which was something that was long awaited for SHIMMER fans and to say they went nuts when she won it would be an understatement. Joe, TF and myself all joined in on the celebration and went nuts along with everyone else, knowing that we were there to witness something special. It really tells you something about how bad mainstream wrestling is these days when you have giant arenas full of people just sitting quietly for most of the show, yet everyone in this 300 seat little building was on their feet and giving one of the loudest ovations I've ever heard. I really can't say enough good things about this, but to sum it up, it was a rare reminder of why I love wrestling so much.
After the show, we once again headed to the afterparty. When we first got there, it was a little less hectic than the night before. We ended up getting a few pictures with some people, including a hilarious one where Britani Knight asked TF if she could wear his captain's hat. Another of the wrestlers, Ariel, asked why he wore the captain's hat, which was also amusing. TF and me ended up eating again, I had a cheeseburger and fries which were pretty good. After that, there really wasn't much to do because it was filling up so much again, so we just decided to leave soon. TF went out to the car and attempted to take a nap, while Joe and me took one last walk through the place before we decided to leave. I started to walk towards the door before looking back at Joe and asked if he was coming, which he responded he was. I then went outside and waited angrily for about 10 minutes for him and felt as if he had ditched me, so I stormed up to the car and woke TF up to rant to him about this. Joe then came out and I yelled at him before he said he was just asking someone something and then got stuck inside. I accepted his apology, but not without giving him a little hassling for it first to teach him a lesson. After that, we went back to the hotel and while the others were anxious for bed, I was conflicted. I was sad that the next morning would be the end of the trip and really didn't want to go to bed, but at the same time, I was tired and knew that if I didn't sleep, the next day would be a long day. I ended up going to sleep on the floor again, trying to avoid the area where the bathroom water flooded.
Monday October 3rd, 2011
Monday morning was as always, depressing. We woke up at about 5 AM because I had an early flight, and Joe decided he wanted to hang around at the hotel and get a little extra sleep. I said my goodbyes to him and TF and I hit the road, actually having one last cozy car ride through the city as the sun began to rise. Unfortunately I couldn't fully enjoy this, as I was starting to catch the cold Joe had caught and was feeling slightly miserable. TF dropped me off at O'Hare and I bid him farewell before going in through security and getting ready for the long day of travel ahead of me. Honestly, I got home alot quicker than I usually do and it was a fairly painless day of travel, but the fact that I was sick and running on such little sleep made me feel quite miserable and I couldn't wait to get home. Not much to say about the plane rides, other than I sat next to a business man. Finally at about 3 I got home to the airport and my Mom and Sister picked me up. They wanted to go to Wal Mart, which I really didn't feel like, but I did need to get a few things for home so I went into Wal Mart like an undead zombie and spent the last of my trip money on some toilet paper and groceries. I then went home, briefly got online to catch up on some things, then proceeded to go sleep for about 12 hours in the first bed I had slept in in days.
All in all, it was a great trip. Alot of bad and crazy things happened, maybe more than ever before, but at least we can say it was memorable. We also had some really great memories out there and most of all, we just enjoyed getting the chance to hang out with eachother. Unfortunately, we have realized that we were overdoing it with these trips so we're going to start taking them less to give us a chance to save more money and be better prepared. It's sad that we won't get to go as often, but it really is for the best. Until Trip 4...
I woke up on Wednesday morning, as with every trip, with a feeling of glee and excitement for the week ahead. I woke up at about 5 AM and talked to Joe online about some of the things TF and I were planning for the day, and some of the nervousness I was feeling about the flights.
