Archie can't deal with the fact that he's fifty, and his surprise birthday party (which Edith had carefully told him about in advance) isn't helping matters any.
I have two personal footnotes:
I had finally come to grips with the fact that I was about to turn fifty, and then AARP sent me all kinds of invitations to join and got me upset again.
Six months after we celebrated my wife's fiftieth birthday, her father informed her that she was 49, and yes, he was right, and yes, she is Polish.
