No offence but that's a really pointless question! It's been technically proven that DVD is a huge improvement on VHS.
I'm a massive DVD fan - I've got about 50 discs in my collection and I have 2 DVD players! And now that they've brought out a DVD player that can also record things onto disc there will soon be no need for VCR's at all!!

Fair do's. You're entitled to your opinion....even if I don't understand it. Explain to me how you can possibly prefer VHS to DVD.

* They are generally cheaper but the price of DVD players is falling all the time.
* Like I said before, there has just been a new DVD player released in this country that can record onto DVD's as well as play them. This particular machine is quite expensive at the moment but the price will undoubtably drop once recordable DVD technology becomes more abundant.
* DVD's can't get all snarled-up and caught in the player the way video tapes do.
* Video tapes can wear out if you play them a lot. DVD's have a projected 'lifespan' of 50 years, provided you treat them right.
* DVD's have amazing picture and sound quality that no VCR can even compete with.
* DVD movies have loads of extra features such as behind-the-scenes documentaries and cast interveiws that aren't available on the VHS releases.
* Most DVD's are presented in widescreen (which is very important to me because I have a widescreen TV). Most videos are not presented in widescreen.
* DVD's are smaller and so take up less storage space.
* Movies come out to buy on DVD up to 6 months before the VHS version (at least, they do in Britain).

Call me old fashioned but I like VHS better. I have over 50 VHS tapes of things taped off of TV and if I had a dvd player they'd be worthless. Do they make recordable DVDs and do they have something where I can convert all of my vhs tapes to dvds? Until they have both of those I'm sticking with good ole VHS tapes. :)

VHS. First of all, more things are available on VHS. And if you drop a VHS, you rarly break it, the same for DVD, but there's more of a chance that DVDs can be damaged. You can record, rerecord, rererecord, rerererecord, etc on VHS(Unless you do it over and over again until your VCR catchs fire) VHS players are easier to use. Everyone knows that most everything will be released on VHS, a lot of things aren't available on DVD. Also, titles that are out of print are usually on VHS. DVD's still are too expensive. And you can't even record on them. If DVDs last until 2005 and they release DVD players you can record on, my family would prob get it. But VHS is economicly safer in that more people have VHS players Vs. DVD players.

VHS. I have tons of VHS tapes. I don't like DVD because you can't record at all, and that's basically what I do.

I usually don't take kindly to new things. DVD is one of them. I hate the idea that some people woud even consider tossing VCRs out the window just because something new and better has come out. I understand that progress is very important... But there should be room for both in this world.
VHS.

Well, I like both and hate both.
I like DVD for all the reasons Mossopp stated. I don't like it because right now a good DVD player is too expensive (I do have one in my computer though).
I like VHS because it's easy and recordable and I record things all the time. But, it wears out, gets stuck, doesn't always record in the clearest fashion.
If I buy anything in a store and it's on DVD, I buy DVD over VHS, but I'm glad VHS exists so I can catch all those great TV moments.

Top 3 reasons not to buy a DVD system:
1. You can touch a tape all you want, you touch a DVD disc, it gets dirty and it's no longer usable.
2. A VCR is WAAAY less than a DVD player.
3. A DVD disc is around 10 - 20 $ more than a VHS
I rest my case :D

1- Well..yea thats true
2-No. My DVD player was like $100. I have seen VCRs WAAAAY more expensive than that. Sure, they have cheaper ones, but a) they have cheaper DVD players too and b) You have to spend quite a bit to gt a good VCR
3- Not really. I got DVDs for like 7 bucks. My Moulin Rouge DVD was $25 and I'm sure the VHS will be about that much.
WHY DVDs RULE!!!!!
1- Does a Playstation 2 come with a VCR? I THINK NOT!
2- SPECIAL FEATURES!!!
3- Scene selections...blah blah blah
4- Sound and pictures
WHY VHS RULES
1- Recording
2- Most people have a lot of VHS. You have to go buy all new DVDs.
3- Lotsa other reasons too.
I like both. That's why I have both....in my room...MWAHAHAHA

If you touched the actual tape inside the cartridge, it would be even more useless.

I prefer VHS. Now, if FOL,DS,GG and other
tv shows come out on DVD then I would
pick DVD. But, I don't see that happening any time soon. Plus, the movies on DVD,
you can't convert them over to VHS.

Actually, it is possible to convert DVD to VHS in theory . Samsung have just released a combined VCR and DVD in Britain this month. It's just one unit - the DVD drive is on the left and the VHS deck on the right. It is possible to record DVD's onto tape using this machine providing the DVD you are trying to copy doesn't have copyright protection encoded on it.
And why are so many of you still saying that you prefer VHS cos DVD can't record?? How many times do I have to say this??? You can buy DVD players that record onto disc!!! All you need to do is connect it to your TV and you can record ANYTHING you want onto DVD!!!!

It all depends cos there are different types of recordable DVD and each one is different (and incompatable) from the others. I think the blank DVD's cost about as much as a blank CD and I think the maximum number of hours you can record on each one is about 8.
The different types of recordable DVD are DVDRW, DVD+RW and DVD-RW. Like I said before, none of them are compatable with each other so if you have a DVD-RW machine it won't play DVD+RW discs.

DVDs are good, VHSs are good. Neither are bad, and one is not better than the other. Now, to kind of point out a few things here. First, DVDs are not all that much more expensive than VHS these days. Second, DVD players are much more inexpensive than before, and can be found at a price that is perfectly reasonable. Third, while there are DVD recorders, they're NOT inexpensive. They do cost considerable amounts of money.

DVDs...what I like about them is that you don't have to waste time rewinding them...I know that sounds like I'm really lazy, but I just cannot stand trying to rewind to your favorite part of a movie. On Dvd, you can just go to scene selection and there ya go. Hmm..but if we had never gotten a dvd player, I would have said VHS. This is how we got our dvd player: my dad's friend at work was having a raffle for 2 dvd players. My dad was friends with the lady and bought a ticket and didn't expect to win. Well, he won and was like "well what the hell can I do with this" (this was about 3-4 years ago, our dvd player is kinda old) and we just stored it for 2 years. Then I found it, went crazy cause I had been wanting one and installed it.
A downside to DVD is that renting them costs a little more- VHS are about 2.50 while DVD costs about $4. Isn't that a ripoff. Oh well, the video store in our town is the only one for like 10 miles. WE could probably rent them cheap, but we don't feel like driving 1/2 hour when we could just as easily drive 5 minutes. yeah, so...I am gonna stop now...

DVDs and videos cos the same to rent over here - about £3.50. You shouldn't complain about spending $4 to rent a DVD - that's about the equivalent of £2.25 so you're still getting them cheaper than in Britain!!!
How much (on average) do DVD's cost to buy in America? Over here they're about £20 each which I would estimate is about $36 (unless I'm getting my exchange rates all mixed-up!!)

Yep, that's about what it costs for me. And I was checking prices on the movie "Princess Diaries". And it was like $13 or $14 bux for VHS but like 20 bux for DVD. Other movies I have seen a little higher than $20...but I do believe that is what it is on average.
BTW, you said (mossop) that you could record off of tv using DVD, can you re-record over that? Like you can on VHs...I was wondering cuz I'm considering buying a DVD player...And what brand do you have...and has it been good, in quality, so far?

It depends where you buy it. You can get them for real cheap at Walmart- about $17...but if you go to a Sam Goody, they will probably be around $25.
BTW: I would never pay 36 bucks for a DVD...you could buy 3 VHS for that!

i have both so i dont give a f%^! which one is better or not and i enjoy both, i was at my friends and we were watching a dvd and it got all messed and it kept like skipping, and $h!t but my dvd player is nice, but i enjoy vhs for recording and buying Vhs tape are cheaper and the quality is not usually a massive difference and i enjoy saving my money towards good things like snickers crunchers lol
in theory you could burn dvds on your computer and if u have a tv thing on your computer you could record, but most people dont want to spend the money or time or effort into doing that
Mossop u seem very bias in a way and dont apperciate peoples opinions who perfer vhs as opposed to dvd, i mean since vhs is generally cheaper, it is easy and more accsessible to people who cant afford dvd and has good quality~ also the thing were u could record on dvd...wow i never knew, ill jus run out and get one...no wait i wont, because it cost a lot and if u have a vhs or not as "up to date" dvd player they still work fine and i enjoy recording on vhs..also why spend so much on one when that money can go towards something more important for example a family member in need or house issues...

You need a special DVD player in order to record things on it. Recordable DVD players are a lot more expensive than regular players. But, to answer your question - yes, recordable DVD can re-record over something you've already recorded.
There are a lot of things to think about when buying a DVD player. For example, is picture quality the most important factor for you? Or are you more interested in getting a DVD player that is top-of-the-range for audio reproduction? Or do you just want a really inexpensive player so you can watch DVD's in your bedroom? Your answer to these questions will determine what make of player will suit you best.
Before you go out and spend a lot of money on a DVD player I strongly suggest you have a read through some home cinema magazines (you know, the ones that test and reveiw home cinema equipment) just to get a kind of idea of what you might be looking for. Reading over performance reviews of certain players definately helped me when I was looking to buy my second DVD player. The first DVD player I bought I just saw going cheap in a sale and I bought it without even thinking. I was fairly lucky - it wasn't an awful player but it certainly wasn't the best. I bought a new DVD player a few days ago and I read reveiws and got outside opinions on the models I was interested in before I handed my money over. As a result I am extremely happy with my new DVD player.
I don't really know if there is much point in me telling you what make and model DVD players I have as I doubt you will have the same ones in America. But since you asked -
The first player I bought was an Oritron 600. It was inexpensive and was fine for a machine in it's price range but it was nothing spectacular. My new DVD player is a Sharp DV-620. I am very happy with it's performance. :D
And in reply to HockeyBabe -
You're right - in a way I suppose I am bias towards DVD but that's only because I have a DVD player and a VCR and I've had ample opportunity to compare the two. I am in no way suggesting that everyone should immediately go out and burn their VCRs. All I'm saying is that, in my own opinion DVD is better.
I also want to say that I am not being blase about money either. I appreciate that not everyone has the money for a recordable DVD player. Hell, I don't have the money for a recordable DVD player. The only reason I can afford a DVD player at all is cos I work full-time. I am aware that most of the people here are still at school and don't have high-paid jobs. I wasn't trying to suggest that I'm special cos I have money. I think you missed my point entirely.

Consumer Reports puts out reviews of VCRs, DVD's, etc. quite often and they're good reviews.
