Like Mr. Mondello, Mrs. Rutherford seems to never be seen either. I know we meet Violet Rutherford, the daughter, but do we ever see the mother?

Yes, several times. Off the top of my head, she was in the barrel hoops episode and the episode where the two families go on a picnic and Fred takes a picture of Violet kissing Beaver.
She also had two different names. She was 'Geraldine' in the barrel hoops ep and I think she was also called 'Gwen' in other eps.

There was an episode where the Rutherfords and the Cleavers went on a Picnic together. Gwen Rutherford was played by Majel Barrett. (aka Mrs. Gene Rodenberry). The episode is called "Beaver and Violet".

Yup - Maj married the creator of Star Trek, appeared in the franchise, and became almost as well known to Trekkies as her hubby!

She went from being Mrs. Rutherford to Mrs. Rodenberry to where no man has gone before! Quite an amazing trip!

It had to be a step up from the boring, pompous Rutherfords to being part of the Starship Enterprise!!

Hey if I had to pick between Fred Rutherford and the Starship Enterprise I'd pick The Enterprise too!

According to a radio interview from two years ago, Frank Bank claimed the actress who played Gwen Rutherford died after the third season, so thats why you dont see her.

There is a discrepancy here. According to the above posts, Gwen Rutherford was played by actress Majel Barrett. She didn't pass away then.

There were two different actresses who played Mrs. Rutherford. I don't have names, but I know there were two different actresses playing the role and if the 1st one died I guess that was the reason for the other actress.

I looked it up - and in Lumpy's very first episode (aptly titled "Lumpy Rutherford" from Season 1), his mother was played by Helen Parrish. Ms. Parrish died just shy of her 36th birthday in 1959 of cancer. :(

And THEN there was the episode "The Parking Attendants"from the 1962-1963 new house last season years, where BOTH Fred Rutherford AND Wally (later on)chewed Eddie out .A different actress also played Gwen Rutherford in this episode.

Earlier posts were correct about the different Mrs. Rutherfords. But I just want to point out that Majel Barrett was TWENTY-EIGHT when she played her. And she had a high-school age son? That was some weird casting!

I looked it up - Mrs. Rutherford was played by an actress named Margaret Stewart in that ep.

Crazy, isn't it? Kind of like the soaps where the kids are so rapid-aged that they are almost the same age as their screen parents!!

The same thing happened on The Cosby Show. Phylicia Rashad who played the mother, Claire Huxtable, was only only 10 years older than Sabrina LeBeauf who played the oldest daughter, Sondra.

I got one that can top that! On The Mothers-in-Law (series release Jul. 27) Roger C. Carmel (b. in 1932) was only 4 years older than Jerry Fogel (b. in 1936), who played his son! (Unless their ages are wrong on Imdb)

Here's the topper - on Young & The Restless, back in the early 90s, John O'Hurley (pre-Seinfeld) played the father of Peter Barton. John O'Hurley is a whopping one year older than Peter Barton!!!

Must be a bit of closeness on a show when the cast is really so close in age. Probably Rusty(larry Mondell) wasn't all that close to Madge. They did their scenes but he probably was closer to Barbara. I wonder how old Rusty real mother was at the time he did the show.
Sad to hear about Helen, Lumpy's first mom. Died so young 36. That must of been a shock to the show. She wasn't a big cast member but they knew of her. Richard Deacon must have felt sad. Things about the show you never knew. Must be fun to work in show business. I wish I had a job there. Not acting but just knowing the tidbits.

I always remember Peter as Matthew Star....that, and as the guy who gets his head crushed in by Jason in Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter.
It's been awhile since I listened to it, but I seem to recall on the DVD commentary for Hell Night(early 80's slasher) Linda Blair saying that Peter was thinking about quitting acting, but I guess she and Peter were long time friends and she talked him into coming aboard for Hell Night.

Oh yeah, Peter Barton does connect to Leave It To Beaver- In Hell Night when Barton's character is telling Linda Blair about his father, Barton describes him as being like Ward Cleaver.
