The average number of songs played will vary but stations in my area (NC) normally play about 12-14 songs per hour.

Depends what kind of DJ.

Depends on the kind of radio station, if its a commerical or non profit station.

Also there is a DJ at at party.

I heard that there's an old song that is 23 minutes long. I'm not sure why it's so long.

You also have to consider song length. Some are barely a minute long, and some, like Jenny said, can be several minutes long.

Depends more on the format if we're talking about radio stations. The average country song clocks in at about 3 minutes while rock songs can vary but very rarely will a station play a song of considerable length such as Iron Butterfly's In-a-Gadda Davida which is almost 18 minutes IIRC. If the song is played then it's usually the condensed version. Classic rock stations will normally play the full versions of Don McLean's American Pie and The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again which are both over 8 minutes and some stations will play the edited versions. The main reason of course is advertising and playing a song that is rather lengthy means less time for commercials which are the primary reason the station is on the air.
