40 years ago today an oxygen tank on the Apollo 13 spacecraft exploded. For astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert their mission objective immediately changed from landing on the moon to just trying to get home alive.

It's a miracle they all survived that disaster. The 1995 movie directed by Ron Howard was very good, too!

I have always been amazed at the amount of tension Ron Howard was able to build into that movie considering we all already knew the outcome of the mission. Also great acting by the cast.

I'm surprised he never got an Oscar nomination for his direction. It was awesome!!

According to IMDB.com he wasn't even nominated for a best director Oscar for this film. Although he did win both a DGA (Director's Guild of America)award and a Golden Globe for his direction of Apollo 13.
