Wisdom Teeth?

Has anyone had their wisdom teeth removed? I'm having mine taken out on the first and I have some questions for anyone who's gone through the procedure.

What can I expect as far as recovery? How long did it take you to recover and how painful was it?

Where you put to sleep and if so, how long after the procedure were you asleep?


How long did the pain last after surgery?


Eh, I'll post some more questions as I think of them.

I had two of my wisdom teeth taken out.
They put me to sleep using this intravenous anesthetic, and it worked really well. They said it was the kind that I would wake up if they asked me to, and I do remember waking up for a second while the Dr. was wrenching out one of my teeth. But it was alright because I didn't feel anything at all.

I felt good for quite a while after the procedure. Though after the anesthetic wore off it did get kind of uncomfortable. I'm not going lie to you.
Of course, this was in the dead of summer and we didn't have air conditioning, so that added to it.

So, I would say, either get it done while it is still cold out, or make sure you have air conditioning.

Other than that, I don't think the pain lasted very long. The first night was the worst, but it got better of course.

Well, everyone's experiences with wisdom teeth removal is different. I experienced more nausea and my sister experienced more pain. Here's my story of my wisdom teeth removal:

It was Friday, August 29, 1997 - the first week of my senior year of high school. My mom drove me to the oral surgeon, and they gave me a shot. I remember a nurse helping me walk to the curb where my mom was waiting in the car. I remember lying on the couch, having dry heaves, and my mom helping me out. The next evening, I was in the living room, on the couch, watching TV (COPS & America's Most Wanted) and utterly miserable. I was still in a lot of pain and nauseous from the medication. I was trying to eat pudding when the program was interrupted by a news bulletin. I remember saying a prayer for Diana before I went to sleep (at that point she was still in critical condition). The next day I woke up to find out the terrible news that she was dead. The rest of the day I just slept. I mainly remember feeling so groggy and nauseous. I like Jello, mashed potatoes, soup and the like but got tired of eating nothing but that stuff for a week!

I had 4 removed at once. Man it's been so long. I had mine removed in 1994.

Recovery wasn't too long for me at least. Pain lasted a few days. The stitches I had were the kind that would disintigrate after a short time, so at least I didn't have to go back to have those removed.

I had them knock me out completely, I woke up in the car on the way home. LOL

I had all four removed at once, and I honestly don't remember a great deal of pain once the meds wore off. I was totally under during the procedure. And I, too, had the kind of stitches that just disintegrated.

I had the surgery in the morning, and I actually went to work at 10 P.M. that night. I was really lucky, I guess.

i had two on top and two on bottom . i don't rember hurting. it felt kind of werid. they let me use laughing gas. if you get densits get lauging gas. it makes you realexed.

I did, back on June 15, 1990, right after I graduated from high school. My mom and dad sent me to a specialist in Fairfield, just south of where I lived at the time in Hamilton. (I remember being in the office, then waking up with them gone--no pain.)

Atypical story in my case. My dentist removed each side individually over the course of two weeks, Summer 2005. For both sides he just gave me a local and went to work. Kind of preferred that way, I'm the type who wants to know what's going on. Both times I went home, popped an Aleve, and took a nap. That initial pill each time was the only one I had to take for pain, and that was more of a preventative measure. Both times I was fine the next day. Back to normal foods within 2 days. (Had to make sure the blood clots set in).

My story, from having talked with others in the past, is pretty atypical and is likely on the best-case-scenario end of things. You may feel a lot of pain, or you may fly through without a care in the world. Everyone is different so there's no way to know where you'll wind up on the pain spectrum.

I forgot to mention that I had all 4 of mine removed at once, same as some of the rest of you did. I also had the dissolving stitches. The main reason why my parents scheduled August 29th for my surgery was because it was Labor Day weekend and they didn't want me to have to miss any more school than necessary.

Friday, January 19, 2007. I had all four teeth yanked. They administered drugs via IV... One minute I was strapped to the OR table, next thing I knew, I was back in my shirt and jacket (I had to take off my shirt - but kept my jeans on - and put on a hospital gown), sitting up in a chair and all of a sudden I was shivering. It's a side effect of going under via IV, apparently. You might wake up and have uncontrollable shivering, even though you're not cold. Oh, and my tongue was suuuuuuuuuuuper dry and suuuuuuuuuuuper covered in blood too. I tried moving around my mouth... Stuffed with gauze. When my dad was getting ready to drive me home, he forgot my coat and had to run back in for it (North Dakota in January... lol. But it wasn't too cold that day).

When I got home, I gargled with plain water... I was spitting out blood for quite a bit (from my tongue being so caked with blood).

I was eating solid food by later that night. :D took the Vicodin because I could. I healed beautifully.

I had all 4 removed back in the 80's. The bottoms I had Novocaine, the top nothing. I was told the shot would actually hurt more than the teeth being pulled, it didn't even hurt that much. It's been so long I don't remember if I had pain probs or how long.

That reminded me of the episode of The Wonder Years in which Kevin had a cavity and was talking to Wayne, who talked about getting past "that needle ... 'bout the size of a telephone pole."! :lol: I don't remember having any needle stuck in me for novocaine, but it could have been done when I was asleep.

When I was 20 I had my wisdom teeth pulled. As I recall they dont totally knock you out. I vaugly remember what happened except afterwards being really dizzy and my mouth being super numb. I couldnt eat solid foods for four days afterwards and only had to drink ginger ale. My mouth wasnt sore in the least.

I just had an upper wisdom tooth out. Wasn't bad at all since it was only one and it wasn't impacted. But I followed the dentist's instructions to a t and got a lot of rest for the first 24 hrs. which are crucial to the healing. Basically had liquids the first day and very soft foods the 2nd and started to eat reg foods around the 5th day
