Where did they go ?

Does anyone know how come when shows come back for another season, or change names where some of the characters go? (Example) what happened to the oldest brother and middle sister in the torklesons when they moved and changed the name to " Almost home"? did they lose two kids on the drive?

It happens when the producers realize that ratings are dropping, so they go find some people off the street and get together a research group, they show them different versions of the show and get feed back, what ever gets the best feedback gets put on the air.
I personally liked it better without the other two kids
