MOSCOW - A Russian chimpanzee has been sent to rehab by zookeepers to cure the smoking and beer-drinking habits he has picked up, a popular daily reported on Friday. An ex-performer, Zhora became aggressive at his circus and was transferred to a zoo in the southern Russian city of Rostov, where he fathered several baby chimps, learned to draw with markers and picked up his two vices.
"The beer and cigarettes were ruining him. He would pester passers-by for booze," the Komsomolskaya Pravda paper said.
It added he has now been transferred to the city of Kazan, about 800 km (500 miles) east of Moscow, for rehabilitation treatment.

I stole (or should that be APE-d?) this story from Tom (TJL) - he had the link up on his Facebook page with the comment "Man, Charlie Sheen has really hit rock bottom..."

Maybe someone should introduce Charlie Sheen to this chimp, sounds like they may hit it off.

It's true! But why did the morons at the zoo or wherever give him cigarettes and booze in the first place? I don't think he can light the cigarettes on his own!!

It's animal abuse. I hope some people at that Zoo loose their jobs. They certainly shouldn't be taking care of animals. You wouldn't give give booze and cigarettes to your children don't give them to animals.

Can you please explain to me what's so humorous to you about an animal being horribly abused? I don't get the joke.

Well, I don't know about this particular chimp but it can be very possible for them to light cigs.
Chimps are known to copy and they can pick up on how to light a lighter and use it if they see it enough.
Possible the chimp was given a lighter and would hide it somewhere in the cage and take it out when he got more cigs.
I'm just guessing here... but it's very possible for chimps to light their own cigs.

I guess so...but I know a chimp can't go to the nearest supermarket and plunk down a few bucks for cigarettes. (At least I don't think so.)As far as I know, only humans can still do that.

Yeah, I know that. It might take some time but they pick up on what they see and learn how to do things that humans do.
When they might see people drinking or smoking passing by they would motion that they want it.

I was referring to the thread title. "Boozy ape sent to rehab" strikes me as a humorous line.
I think my feelings on animal rights have been expressed elsewhere. I have volunteered for an animal shelter for over a decade, and have supported humane treatment of animals my whole life.
Surprised (and disappointed) I had to explain this, actually.
