View Full Version : In Living Color
In order to refresh your memory, In Living Color was a half hour sketch comedy/variety show that much like The Simpsons, The Tracy Ullman Show, 95210, Married With Children, Cops, and America's Most Wanted, helped the Fox network get off of the ground back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It's one of those programs that started out strongly with often clever writing/ideas that tended refuse to pull a ton of punches at the time but ended up dying a sad and painful death. What's even more painful to the point was that the show's downful was that the show only ran for about four seasons as it soon became just a shell of itself. In the process of this, jokes often felt extremely recycled with a heavier reliance on very cheap and one note low brow/gross out humor.

J Lo was a Fly Girl. I always wanted to be a fly girl. Except I could never get that dancing bit down.....
The most logical theory to direct to the sudden downfall of the show is right around the time in which the Wayans left. As the story goes, Keenan Ivory Wayans quit over a disagreement with Fox surrounding the direction of the rerun and/or syndication package. If you're wondering why Damon Wayans left, it simply wasn't because he decided to focus more strongly on his movie career. This came after he was bothered by Fox heavily over-viewing the content of the show way before hand after the controversy that arouse after a live Super Bowl half time special during on of the "Men On.." skits.
These have been (at least in my opinion) the best skits throughout the history of the show:
1. The skit (which seemingly comes off as sort of a cross between "Roots" and The Brady Bunch Movie) in which a run-away slave finds himself in modern day America as he's unaware that the happenings back during the days of slavery have changed all around him.
2."The Art of Metamorphosis"-This is essentially, an almost pointless excuse for Jim Carrey to stand around for a few mintues while contoring his body. The best part comes towards the end in which Carrey gives this crazy look on his face while quoting Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Batman ("What 'til they get a load of me!"). Coincidentially, Carrey went on to star in Batman Forever while the huge grin that he gave off was pretty reminiscent of the Grinch (for which Carrey also went on to play).
3. The "Men On..." (this is a recurring skit which concerns TV gay (and I don't mean happy) critics hosting their own TV show) cliffhanger skits in which one of the hosts gets bonked on the head which causes him to act macho and straight.
4. "Star Trek: The Wrath of Farrakhan"
5. "Kung Fu Master '91"-"Give me the damn stone!"
