The iconic Hollywood sign was being covered with lettering which will make it read “Save The Peak.”

A conservation group, the Trust For Public Lands, was given permission to change the sign as part of its campaign to save a nearby hilltop, Cahuenga Peak, from development.

the sign would be covered until Tuesday.

The group has raised about half of the $12 million (£7.2 million) it needs to buy the peak, which has been put on the market by its Chicago-based owners.

Conservationists fear the land, which was once owned by billionaire Howard Hughes, could be sold to developers who would build luxury homes on it.

The world famous sign, which originally read “Hollywoodland,” was created in 1923.

Interesting. Well, as long as it's not a permanent thing. Maybe it will produce some results! It will certainly get some attention! It's a worthy cause, in any case. The US is overdeveloped anyway. Hopefully they will come away winners!

I don't understand why they would want to build houses on hilltops in California... I mean, COME ON. Hello?? Mudslides?? You guys in southern CA are awfully prone to mudslides. NO! STOP IT! Build your houses somewhere else! NOT THERE!

 Oh man, good for them. Developers better not touch that land.

Oh no, not my Hollywood sign. I had that as my avatar for years. Allison knows exactly how long. I hope Ms. Knows-All-Dates reads this. She's like a cool Rainman (the movie character, not the SO member, lol). I need to start using it as my avatar again.

 Unfortunately I'm not getting as good at that stuff anymore now. I'm surprised when I can remember what I wore yesterday. :) I just remember you started using it sometime around late 2004.

I think I have you beat by now with my avatar... I haven't changed it since October 2006.

^You have had that avatar so long that I don't even remember what avatar you had before it.

I certainly hope nobody builds up there! It was one year ago today (actually, I was there February 9-14--hey, you can't do it all in one day) I visited Los Angeles and saw the Hollywood sign aplenty! The hilltop is called Cahuenga Peak according to the first posting; the motel where I stayed was on Cahuenga Boulevard, just off of US 101 ... and not far from Burbank--and the village from The Wonder Years!

Worse, how about fires? The Hollywood Hills area is prone to fires during our infamous Santa Ana's.

The reason why they cannot build luxury homes anywhere else, because, there isn't any; anyway, they have been threaten to build luxury homes near and around the Hollywood sign forever; this is nothing new.
