I went to the Target store today to buy some Nyquil for my son who was sick all day. Well.......................................
I'm ready to buy the product when the cashier asked me "Show me your license?"
I thought I heard wrong I said What?
She said it again show me your drivers license.
She was going to swipe my drivers license.
   I looked at the people behind me on line.
Does anyone know what's going on with Nyquil or other meds that I don't know of?
One lady said it's a federal law......... What do you think?

Some OTC meds such as Nyquil contain one of the key ingredients for manufacturing Meth. The drug dealers were buying it up in large quanities so some states (if not all) have now put limits on what you can buy and they must keep a log of every person that buys any of the meds on the watch list which includes Nyquil, Sudafed, etc.. This was why you were asked to show your I.D.

Another reason is that some people drink these cold meds by the bottle to catch a buzz. Kids can't buy it, so I guess they want to make sure that stores are complying.
I had a similar thing happen to me over Xmas when I had a nasty cold. I bought both Nyquil and Dayquil. The cashier asked for my birthday when he scanned the Nyquil. I thought it was a little odd, but gave it. What I thought was stranger was when he scanned the Dayquil and asked for it again. I'm like, well, it hasn't changed in the last three seconds...

That's crazy! On a separate note, at the T-Mobile store where I go to pay my phone bill - even though I pay cash, they still ask for my license.

Another reason why they may have asked for your license is because liquid Nyquil contains 10% alcohol.

Could be but most brands of mouthwash contain more than that and I've never known anyone to be asked for I.D. when buying it. The CVS brand that I have here now contains 21.6% alcohol.

That's not new - Target has been doing that for years.
Walmart doesn't ask for ID, from what I know.
CVS... Good luck, you're on your own.

Yes, they're supposed to anyway. When I worked there as a cashier 2 years ago that was part of our training.

Very sad that its come down to needing ID to purchase over the counter medicines because kids want it for a buzz. Ugh... it makes me sick (pun intended!) to think that kids actually want to drink stuff like Nyquil and cough medicine to get themselves high. I can't stand the stuff when I'm sick. No way would I drink it for enjoyment! Right now, just the thought of the stuff has me wrinkling my nose in disgust!

It's a really sad statement about our society when over the counter medications have to be regulated to prevent them from being abused.

Agreed. Liquid Nyquil is some of the most disgusting stuff ever - when I had to get some, I vowed next time to buy it in capsule form!!!

My husband had a field day laughing  because he was saying to me... Didn't the cashier look at you and realize you were over 18?

You can make meth with Nyquil. They scan your ID to monitor how many times you buy it.

There is also an ingredient in a lot of cough syrups (Robitussin, both syrup and gel form, Delsym, Coricidin (the high blood pressure med), etc, called dextromethorphan. Or, DXM, for short. It's the ingredient that makes you feel loopy when you take the recommended dosage.
If you drink all the cough syrup or take all pills at once, DXM acts as a disassociative hallucinogen.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextromethorphan
Look at a bottle of cough syrup sometime. You'll see a warning label aimed at parents about helping prevent teen drug abuse. Syrups and pills that contain dextromethorphan are VERY popular with teens.
It's why CVS keeps their syrups/pills behind the counter and IDs the hell out of everyone when they ask for some.
