My cousin is having brain surgery...

...on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Even though it is a benign tumor, it's still a long and potentially risky surgery. So please keep Colin in your prayers. He's had so many hard knocks for a 21-year-old.

Here is a picture of him at my nephew Andrew's 3rd birthday party this past June. Colin is on the left. Also in the pic is my brother, brother-in-law and sister.

I could be confusing it with a different kind, but I'm pretty sure that it was dealing with brain surgery. I hope they are able to get the tumor out.

You're correct, most brain surgeries are done with the patient awake. Even though they now can carefully map the brain beforehand, they still like to have the patient awake so they can test areas better before they go ahead cutting in that area.
I used to think this would be really scary, but sort of neat at the same time. There is no feeling whatsoever in the brain itself and the skull is completely numbed so it's not painful at all.
As I've said, I opted not to have surgery, but a lot of it had to do with the location and the fact that they knew ahead they wouldn't be able to get the whole tumour.
A girlfriend and former coworker of mine had a benign tumour the size of a hardball removed back in 1990 with absolutely no after effects from it.
I hate to say it, but we're going to see this become a fairly common surgery with everyone using cell phones, etc. without a bluetooth. I'm sure we're going to see a rise in the incidents of brain tumours cuz of all the gadgetry out there now.

Monika, let your cuz know that there are a lot of people rooting for him and some have been through this stuff themselves. There are great doctors out there now and I'm sure he'll be fine and within a few months back to his old self again. :) :hugs:

Update - Colin is at home now, resting comfortably. He does have to go back to the hospital next week for some follow-up tests, but so far so good!! Thanks again, everyone, for all your prayers and support!! :bighug:
