Eight years ago (in fact, the day after I officially joined SO), legendary guitarist, Chuck Schuldiner, of the extreme metal band Death, lost his life to cancer at the age of 34. Death was often tagged as a death metal band, but
he always felt he was deeper than being merely pigeonholed as a death metal artist. He was supremely talented in guitar playing as well as a lyricist--he wrote lyrics about the human condition and about issues of medical ethics and
other topics of social commentary. He was unique in that he did not write about typical themes of gore and violence for his style of music.

Death had undergone a number of lineup changes, with Chuck remaining at the center, as often his bandmates failed to share his musical vision. In his remaining years his life imitated art in that he developed a nearly inoperable tumor in the back of his head. As treatment and surgery was very expensive,
his family was able to summon the support of the metal and music community to raise funds for his operations. Unfortunately, it was too late--on December
13, 2001, Chuck Schuldiner passed away, but his music lives on through such albums as 'Spiritual Healing' and 'Individual Thought Patterns'.
