The '00s: Goodbye (at Last) to the Decade From Hell
By Andy Serwer Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009

At exactly two minutes after midnight on Jan. 1, 2000, an alarm sounded at a nuclear power plant in Onagawa, Japan. Government officials and computer scientists around the globe held their breath. Was this the beginning of a massive Y2K computer meltdown? Actually, no. It was an isolated event, one of a handful of glitches to occur (including the failure of 500 slot machines at two racetracks in Delaware) as the sun rose on the new decade. The dreaded millennial meltdown never happened.

Instead, it was the American Dream that was about to dim. Bookended by 9/11 at the start and a financial wipeout at the end, the first 10 years of this century will very likely go down as the most dispiriting and disillusioning decade Americans have lived through in the post–World War II era. We're still weeks away from the end of '09, but it's not too early to pass judgment.

Call it the Decade from Hell, or the Reckoning, or the Decade of Broken Dreams, or the Lost Decade. Call it whatever you want — just give thanks that it is nearly over.

Calling the 2000s "the worst" may seem an overwrought label in a decade in which we fought no major wars, in historical terms. It is a sadly appropriate term for the families of the thousands of 9/11 victims and soldiers and others killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. But the lack of a large-scale armed conflict makes these past 10 years stand out that much more.

This decade was as awful as any peacetime decade in the nation's entire history. Between the West's ongoing struggle against radical Islam and our recent near-death economic experience — trends that have largely skirted much of the developing world — it's no wonder we feel as if we've been through a 10-year gauntlet. Americans may have the darkest view of recent history, since it's in the U.S. that the effects of those trends have been most acute. If you live in Brazil or China, you have had a pretty good decade economically. Once, we were the sunniest and most optimistic of nations. No longer.

...There is no guarantee that the next decade (get ready for the Teens!) will be any better than this one. It's likely that China will continue to grow faster than the U.S., and we may continue to see our global dominance erode. But very significantly, we still hold many of the world's trump cards. We still have the world's strongest military, which means we can and must lead in maintaining order and crafting peace. We are the leaders in technological innovation. And we are still the nation that most others emulate. If we remember those points and avoid the easy outs of deferral and neglect, then the next decade should be a helluva lot better than the last one.

I'm glad it's over. It has been the decade of information overload, dysfunction, negativity, celebrity, tack and distasteful sexuality. I'm ready for a low key decade after this one where the rest of us can get back on our feet and all the attention hungry celebrities can go back in their cave.
I'm also hoping that the next decade will bring an end to services like 4chan, Facebook, Twitter and LiveJournal, they've hurt the internet more than helped.

I floved the 2000s and would do them all over again, granted I could be ten years older than I was then.

A lot can happen in 10 years. When January 1st rolled around in 2000 I was 10 years old; which means I'll be 20 when January 1st rolls around in 2010. Sure I lived through some tough s^&t but I also had some kick ass good days. Here's to believing in letting more good times roll.

Wow, this article is WAY negative. There are a TON of crappy things that happened in EVERY SINGLE DECADE. Not just this one. I wouldn't have wanted to be around back in the 1930s, for instance. People were WAY worse off back then, because of the Great Depression.

I dunno about you guys, but I've enjoyed this decade. There's a good chunk of 2007 that I could do without, as well as parts of this year (****ing stressful, and just all-around stupid). For the most part, though, this decade has been good to me. C'mon, guys. SOME good things have to have happened to you this decade, yes?

In 2000 I graduated highschool. So throughout the decade I attended college, lived in Europe, graduated, lived through 4 awful, awful jobs, lost several family members, found a great job and moved out of my parents house. Up and down I'd say. But it's ending on an up :)

The 00's haven't been that great for me, my Mom and two older brothers plus Uncles have passed away this decade. A grandfather figure also just passed a month ago.

Some of it been good and some of it been bad. The worst of the 00's decade was September 11, 2001 when America was attacked by Afghanistan. Hopefully September 11, 2011 will do something to remember the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. The best of the 00's decade was I graduated high school in 2000 and my brother graduated high school in 2002.

In the new decade coming up I will be 30 in 2011 and 29 in 2010. I will miss the 2000's decade.

For me personally the 2000s were good but there was an under current of negativity and weirdness. I will be glad when the 2000s are gone but I dont really have much hope for the next decade.

So what will '10-'19 be called if '00 through '09 are the 2000's/00's? lol

To me, 2010 is a transitional year. It's not exactly the first year of the 2010's decade...but it is at the same time.

But here's how the dacade went for me....

2000-:D
2001-:D
2002-:(
2003-
2004-
2005-:)
2006-:(
2007-
2008-:)
2009- (And this year was the worst year ever. I thought 2007 was bad, but in retrospect...it wasn't).

i agree. for example, people glorify how amazing the 60s were, but think of all the terrible things that happened in those times: race riots, vietnam war (which was a TERRIBLE war), the whole Russia situation..not to mention how many people were on drugs in the 60s lol. and the 30s & early-mid 40s seemed like an awful time, with the depression and WWII.

...The teens?

That's what they say on a weather forecast when they talk about the temperatures. "The lows will be in the teens." Plus, I've heard 1910 - 1919 called that also.

I agree... I refer that time period as the "teens," too.

I agree with Allison. Bad things took place in every decade. Personally, I thought the 2000's to be exciting. Life is what you make it!!!

People LIFE is good and bad and has its ups and downs. **** that, "it was bad because of this decade" like Allison said bad things happened in every decade. We cannot pinpoint and pick out a Utopia because it does not exist. (if you want that go read Aldous Huxley)

I accept life on life's terms. Maybe if we didn't have such high ****ing expectations of everything, we all would be happier.

And if we deleted the mother****ing Facebooks....like I did. :D
