I remember back when DVDs first came out that it was a pretty big thing when complete seasons were being put to DVD.

An example I remember is when the first season of The Sopranos was released on DVD around the year 2000. It sold very quickly and was a huge seller at the time; they were also a lot more expensive back then.

VHS mostly released select episodes, or "Best Ofs"... when they put tv shows to tape.

Did any tv show ever get complete season releases on VHS? I don't recall ever seeing any.

I may be mistaken but I think there were some complete season releases of Sex and the City on VHS.

Yes, I know some were, but I think sales were mostly limited to mail/phone order. Two examples: "The Monkees" were released as a 21 tape set by Rhino Records. "SOAP" was released by Columbia House as a 23 tape set. Columbia House actually included scenes that were absent from Sony's DVD release.

Actually, all six seasons of Sex and the City were released on VHS. I wasn't aware of that.

I just thought of another series on VHS, Dark Shadows (original and the revival series), from MPI Media and MGM Home Video.

MPI also put of some of the Hullabaloo episodes and they did all of Music Scene on VHS. Rhino put out various clips of Shindig, and they put out the whole week of the Mike Douglas Show where John Lennon and Yoko One were the guest co hosts.

I'm pretty sure Friends had at least a couple of seasons released on VHS. The short lived one season V:The Series had all episodes released.

'I Love Lucy' had a few VHS releases. And one year, for my birthday, my parents bought me the Ricardo's and the Mertz's entire European trip on VHS.

I think the entire series of Bewitched was on vhs. I think it was marketed towards serious collectors though. Star Trek is another.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show and Rhoda had best-of vhs releases. Several shows had the first few episodes available.

It just wasn't practical to collect tv shows on vhs. Too costly and if you collected one tv show, imagine how much space it would take to store, compare to dvd sets, which are becoming more and more compact all the time.

Yeah I know. That's why I was wondering on what tv shows had complete season/series releases on VHS since I know many did "Best of's" or a couple of eps. on tape.

I'm pretty sure The Dick Van Dyke Show had full season releases on VHS. The Classic 39 episodes of The Honeymooners were all released on VHS also.

For a long time, Columbia House's re-tv division released many shows in full series--not necessarily in season forms. Those include:
I Love Lucy
Star Trek
ST: TNG
M*A*S*H
SOAP
The Monkees
Wild Wild West

Probably some more I can't remember. They did extensive sets of many shows, but not complete series:
Perry Mason (about 100 episodes)
The Andy Griffith Show (80 of the 249 episodes)
All in The Family (probably about 100 episodes)
Carol Burnett Show (about 60 hour-long eps)
Bewitched (about 100 eps)
Brady Bunch, Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bob Newhart Show, Petticoat Junction, I Dream of Jeannie, Family Ties, Sgt. Bilko, and Dick Van Dyke Show (40 eps each).

They were expensive, but the only way true fans could get uncut shows prior to the explosion of TV on DVD.

Back in the early 2000s Fox released seasons 1-5 of M*A*S*H on VHS at the same time they were released on DVD. They stopped making tapes by season 6.

I've never seen the original Twilight Zone season sets on VHS. The only releases I've seen are the Columbia House tapes and another partial set that had two episodes per tape that was issued by FOX.

Yeah, I have a couple of FOX tapes of the 1980s series.

Besides the expense, it just wasn't realistic to own whole series of shows on vhs. How much space would 11 seasons of M.A.S.H.
take on a shelf?

Some none-too-bright idiot at Columbia House got the idea to issue them with 3 episodes per tape rather than 4 that most of their other series had. The worst part was that all the tapes were themed meaning that on one tape it might be the best of Hawkeye, best of Klinger or some other theme. It was also annoying to get a tape out of the box one month with Henry Blake still alive and well and the next month he's dead.

71 tapes at the issue price of $14.95 each plus $4.95 shipping.... You do the math.

^ In 2002 FOX had started to release seasons of MASH on VHS but they only got the first two seasons and stopped because the VHS format was dying by then and they had already started releasing the DVD sets. I thought it was a waste personally because VHS was on its way out by that time.

In the 1990's I collected most of the Star Trek series in Columbia House VHS and had completed Star Trek and Star Trek The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager not so much since they were starting to come out on DVD. It took up a lot of shelf space, I can tell you that.

Actually, the first 3 seasons of MASH were released on VHS. I used to have the VHS versions and when I got a DVD player, I bought the DVD versions of the first 3 seasons and gave the VHS versions to a friend of mine who's also a MASH fan.

WB released 12 episodes of GI from season 1 on 6 VHS tapes. Since they were the turner prints they were the colorized episodes. The DVD set has the black and white versions and not the colorized. I transfered my colorized GI tapes to DVD so now I have both. :)
