Bloody Disgusting learned exclusively that production officially begins this Monday on I Spit on Your Grave, a remake of Meir Zarchi's classic 1978 film Day of the Woman.

We also learned that Steven R. Monroe (Left in Darkness) will be getting behind the camera for the remake that will star Andrew Howard, best known among genre fans for his roles in Adam Mason's The Devil's Chair, Luster and Blood River.

In the original, a woman is abducted, brutally attacked and raped and then left for dead. She survives, hunts her attackers and dispatches them in graphic ways.

I just checked the IMDB page. The role of Jennifer will be played by Sarah Butler who has had a few guest spots on TV. This might be good. I liked the remake of The Last House On The Left.

Yeah, I saw her name on there too. It could be official or not since IMDB has put up wrong names before on movies that didn't shoot or had begun yet.

By Monday or anytime after that there will be word on the official cast.

Exclusive : Monroe on Spit On Your Grave
by Clint Morris
November 28th, 2009

My good friend, director Steven Monroe (whose last film, “Complacent”, I was a producer on – please check it out if it’s playing in your city! Turkey’s are getting more expensive by the day, and Christmas is approaching quicker than a hair-beseeching magpie!) is knee-deep in a remake of horror classic “I Spit On Your Grave” at the moment....yep, “I Spit on Your Grave”! – and yes, he’s quite aware he’s got his work cut out for him.

Had a bit of a chinwag to Monroe about the flick this morning – which again tells of an aspiring writer who is repeatedly gang-raped, humiliated, and left for dead by four men whom she systematically hunts down to seek revenge - and he’s excited to get going on it, if only because he was such a big fan of the Meir Zarchi-directed original.

And as a fan of the 1978 film, Monroe is determined not to put a contemptible, schlocky remake out in the market place.

“I always have a lot of respect for people who make films that push the envelope and I remember seeing the film in 1980 and even when re-watching recently that it disturbed me enough that each time it stayed with me for several days.

So I feel that Meir Zarchi deserves a lot of respect and kudos for having the guts to make the film especially when it was made. I know that fans of the film and haters of the film are already up in arms about the remake and already saying that I am going to screw it up and chicken out of doing this and doing that...

But I hope that maybe they can at least wait till the film is released and make a educated decision then, even if they still hate it, they have at least seen it.’’

Steven says the new version, which is being produced by Cinetel and distributed by Anchor Bay, will be updated a bit.

“We wanted to stay as true to the original as possible while making sure it was updated in a few ways.

There is one additional lead character, a Sheriff played by Andrew Howard, and of course we upped the brutality and length of the tortures and kills - as they were quite short in the original - which was really a disturbing Thriller at heart not a Horror film. I also wanted to update the look of the film and give it a very voyeuristic quality and gritty realism”.

The filmmaker says he’s got a top-notch cast onboard including newcomer Sarah Butler, Rodney Eastman (“A Nightmare on Elm Street 4”) and Chad Lindberg (TVs “CSI : New York”), and that “they were all so fantastic and believable that I was constantly blown away”.

“I believe Sarah Butler is going to be a huge star”, Monroe says of the actress playing heroine, Jennifer.

“She took this role on fearlessly and nailed it like I don't think anyone else could have. I can't and will never say enough about her. There are also a lot of horror fans out there already complaining that the cast is all no names, I can personally guarantee you that no actress with a name would have had the guts to pull of what Sarah did or went through during shooting, no way. She is awesome.’’

So they can take advantage of the great tax benefits, the filmmakers opted to shoot the flick in Shreveport, LA.

‘’But the location actually fit this film very well. So this time it was actually a good thing’’, he says, adding.

‘’While we were shooting there was a very big budget film shooting in Shreveport, but the film was supposed to take place in Los Angeles... Figure out that one...’’

I really wouldn't say she hunted her attackers(that makes it sound like she tracked them through the woods or something)...Lured them in one by one would be closer.

I'm a fan of the original, one thing I hope they don't keep in the remake is the idiot rapist in the water who grabs on to the outboard motor(seriously, that's like grabbing on to a chainsaw that someone is currently using)

If anything the remake can't even remotely be anywhere as bad as the sequel- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0179458/

Well luring and killing your prey is a form of hunting, no?

I never did see the sequel but I have heard some not so great things about it.

I have the original on DVD; it came in this hard metal case.

I Spit on Your Grave vs. MPAA
Source: MPAA
June 10, 2010

After facing the MPAA on more than a number of occasions, the I Spit on Your Grave remake has received a rating.

Normally, MPAA ratings stories are lame sauce and we've refrained from running them, however, in the case of a film like this - in which the original film is notorious - we thought we'd keep you in the loop.

Director Steven Monroe's update has ultimately received an R "for pervasive strong sadistic brutal violence, rape and torture, nudity and language."

As Anchor Bay hopes to usher this one into theaters later this year, an "R" is best-suited for their release strategy. That doesn't rule out an unrated cut when it hits DVD.

Interview: Chad Lindberg Talks I Spit On Your Grave
Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor

Another "Supernatural" vet has joined the remake club.

In the wake of his co-stars, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, hopping from the hit CW genre series to My Bloody Valentine 3D and Friday the 13th, respectively, Chad Lindberg will be seen this fall in the Anchor Bay release I Spit on Your Grave.

Given the notoriety that surrounds Meir Zarchi's original rape-revenge film, you'd think Grave would be an unlikely candidate for an update. But nothing is sacred, haven't you heard?

Director Steven Monroe gathered a crew and headed to Shreveport, Louisiana where he quietly shot his remake last year with stars Lindberg, Daniel Franzese, Rodney Eastman, Jeff Branson and Sarah Butler. In line with the original, this take finds Butler playing a young woman who is brutalized and raped near her remote cabin only to later exact merciless revenge on her attackers.

To talk about this not-so-pleasant bit of business, Shock met Lindberg - known to "Supernatural" fans for his role as "Ash" - for tacos in Hollywood where he shed some light on the making of Grave, which apparently included much "hurling" on set.

Is it true you had never seen the original prior to being offered this role?

I hadn't seen the original and they sent the script for the remake out under the title Day of the Woman. I read the script and was like, whoa, this is crazy! I had never read anything like that before.

I auditioned and got called back a couple of times and got the part. Then I started doing some reading online about the original and there was a whole history behind it.

Then I got extra excited. I was all about it, I love dark material.

The original is very divisive. In fact, I hardly find any fans, but I think it's incredibly effective.

So when you caught up to the film, what did you ultimately think?

First of all, I had to turn down the volume. My neighbors must think I'm nuts. I thought it was gnarly. It's really a movie that pushes the audiences' mettle to see what they're made of.

It's interesting that the original director, Meir Zarchi, he was driving along Central Park in New York and had come across a woman who was just raped and he took her to the police and from that came this movie. That's amazing.

But yeah, that movie, they just keep going and going and you think they're done and they keep going, okay...

Remakes today are either staying true to the source material or going wildly off track.

What category does this one fit in to?

I think this one is pretty close to the original. I know that they're amping up the tortures of the guys. But we put a realistic spin on it.

Back in the ‘70s things could be a bit campy for today's audience, this is more intimate and realistic. All of the actors, we all got along and felt a connection and bonded.

It was one of the greatest filming experiences I've ever had.

How did your director, Steven, keep the set comfortable given the intense subject matter?

He was very laid back. He never got into our business and he kept it light. We had to laugh and joke about it because the material was so wrong and raw. [laughs]

We'd find ourselves in the middle of Walmart and we're talking about the brutal scenes we had just done, doing it openly in public, and people are just looking at us and thinking, what the hell?

But Steve was super cool and he created a great environment.

Did Steven give you an idea of why this film demanded to be remade in his mind?

I think the consensus was that enough time had passed.

The original director, Zarchi, is on board producing. Steven had seen the original as a kid and it just stuck with him. When this came his way, he felt he could do it.

Did you meet Meir Zarchi?

Yeah, he came to set. He was definitely there and it was a blast.

Now what's your part in the madness? Who do you play?

Matthew. The, um, mentally challenged kid. [laughs]

It was unlike anything I had ever done. It was awesome. I love that I get to play that character. He's the character in the movie that they use to take advantage of the girl.

And he's a fine line character. I didn't want to go over the top. I wanted to keep him child-like and haunting. Realistic. With respect to the original guy, of course.

I wanted him to be innocent and compassionate, if you can give him that.

What was your dynamic like with Sarah Butler.

Clearly during the uncomfortable moments you have to ease the tension. Assure her everything is okay…

Yeah, Sarah is very cool and very down to Earth.

We hit it off immediately and we had a bond going into it. We just trusted each other and trusted Steven. On "the day," the hairs on the back of my neck just stood up. We were high from the work. It was gratifying, though, creatively.

There were a few times though where Sarah had to check herself, she needed her space and would give us the thumbs up. I would, at times, hurl or dry heave between takes. But then we'd go and do it again.

It was great. [laughs] Hard material, but awesome as an actor.

Shock: Did you get those scene out of the way first on the production schedule?

Yeah, they started before I got there. Some establishing stuff.

We shot pretty much in order so we started with those scenes. And then Sarah comes back and takes care of us.

Shock: Are you keeping track of the online talk surrounding the remake?

I think a lot of the fans think it's going to be a big campy Hollywood movie. It's not. We kept this indie.

It felt that way and it's sticking true to the flavor.

Camille Keaton Talks I Spit on Your Grave Remake
Fri., Sep. 10, 2010
by Sara Castillo

The first clip from the I Spit on Your Grave reboot was released yesterday showing Jennifer Hills meeting her brutal torturers for the first time.

Roger Ebert famously called the movie “a vile bag of garbage” and it has been the subject of controversy ever since. So, it’s no surprise that the remake is already causing some serious arguments among fans.

But forget about the fans for a minute, what does the original Jennifer Hills, one of the most famous final girls in history, think of the remake?

Fearnet snatched Camille Keaton away from her long line of admirers at the Horrorfind convention in Gettysburg to get her thoughts on the modern update of this exploitation monster.

Keaton said that she couldn’t believe anyone saw the original movie in the first place.

“I thought the movie would never see the light of day or the dark of the theater,” Camille said.

“I didn’t think it would ever come out. Then when it came out, I thought well, OK, it came out but it’ll go away. But, it didn’t go away ... like a bad cold … and they just made a remake of it and I was stunned and horri - stunned and in shock.

You know what, imitation is the best form of flattery and I embrace the film now.”

There are many brutal moments in the original I Spit on Your Grave and Camille admitted she had quite a few reservations about the movie.

“I wanted to be in an American film and then I was looking at the script and I thought ‘Oh my God’ and it was like how are we going to film this, how are we going to film that …

It’s not like I’m waking up in the morning and saying ‘Oh fantastic! I’m going to get to do a nude scene today. That’s not how I feel.”

In the end Camille was drawn to the film because of Hills’ character.

“The character starts out being nice normal and sweet and she becomes the victim and when she gets her revenge, doing that she becomes empowered, and I like that. You see a dark side of her.”

So what does it take to play a character that enacts every conceivable torture, including castration, upon her captors?

“Guts, courage. It’s not like you call up your parents and say. ‘Do you mind if I do this film, what do you think?’ I mean I was 25-26 years old. I give Sarah Butler a lot of credit.”

I wonder if they tried to ask Keaton about Savage Vangeance(aka I Spit On Your Grave 2), from what I've heard and read she refuses to talk about it if asked. I just wonder the circumstances were that she agreed to do it. Horrendously bad film.

I am definitely intrigued by this remake.

Exclusive: Director Steven Monroe Spits on Your Grave!
Sept 29, 2010
by Alyse Wax

Director Steven Monroe saw the original I Spit on Your Grave as a teenager, and it stuck with him all these years.

When he found out that a remake was in the works, he was adamant about coming on board to preserve to integrity and violence of the rape/revenge story.

We spoke exclusively with Monroe about the decision to go out unrated, and the possibilities of a sequel.

How did you get involved with I Spit on Your Grave?

Cinetel acquired the rights to the film. I was in their office and I saw the DVD sitting on someone’s desk there. I asked what it was doing there, and they told me they acquired the rights to make a remake. I said, “I want to do it.”

I had watched too many bad remakes. I saw the original when I was about 16 and it really had an impact on me. I was worried that, in the wrong hands, it would lose that impact.

Luckily, producers Lisa Hansen and Paul Hertzberg had the same concerns. I read over the first draft of the script and told them my concerns. They agreed with me, and I got the job.

Is this truly unrated? Did you submit it to the MPAA at all?

Yes, it is truly unrated.

The cut we submitted to the MPAA was what we called the “Everything Cut.” It had everything in there that we wanted in there, and that we thought the fans would want to see. We didn’t want the fans to be able to say that we backed off on anything. That is the cut we sent to the MPAA, and that is the cut that is going out to theatres unrated.

The MPAA said that cut would be NC-17, but they also said that they don’t recommend we cut it down. In a way we were shocked, but it was easy for them. They don’t care if the film is released with an NC-17 or an R. It’s the distributors who care. Why go NC-17? You can’t get into any theaterd with that.

At least with unrated, you can show it to theater chains to see if they will take it. And a lot did take it. The R-rated cut that the MPAA signed off on is sitting on a shelf somewhere.

Will that end up getting a wider release?

No. They are not doing any release with that R-rated cut. At all.

With I Spit on Your Grave and Hatchet 2 being released to theatres unrated, do you think this is the renaissance of the unrated film - movies that aren’t being watered down?

I hope so. It’s tricky, because even if you go unrated and you aren’t dealing with the MPAA, you are dealing with the theater chains. They can say no, we aren’t going to show this movie.

So you are still dealing with censorship, but it is an easier thing to change. You can’t change what the MPAA does, but horror fans can change the minds of theatre chains. If theaters that are showing an unrated film are selling out, the theaters that said no before can start to change their mind.

Before we made a decision on the rating, a lot of the internet chatter said that we were going to wimp out, go R-rated, and give us this dumb, watered-down movie.

I get that, but now we are getting people complaining that because it is unrated, it won’t play in many theaters. Make up your mind about what you are mad about! But we know that the real fans will find those theaters.

Have you received any kind of hate mail from conservative groups, or women’s groups, or anything like that?

No. Not yet at least.

I say this with all due respect, but conservative groups don’t generally pay much attention to this kind of media. If the film starts doing really well, they are going to start realizing what is going on. If this was going into a wide release right away, they’d be all over it.

But they don’t know about it yet, so I’m not really worried about it. Most of the hate I have gotten have been from those fans - or pseudo-fans - who are offended that I would remake this film.

Are you trying to please the hardcore fans or make new fans?

Both. This is the most exhausted I have been after any movie I have ever done. I worked so hard to make it work for both audiences.

The producers and I all knew that we weren’t making this film for everyone; we were making it for a specific audience.

It’s nice to see a director who has so much passion for his work on a remake.
Remakes get a really bad rep.

Because there is no passion behind them.

Do you feel that I Spit on Your Grave is a great feminist manifesto, or is it just a slasher film with a message?

I think people will make it out to be whatever they want it to be.

To me, it doesn’t matter the gender; this movie is about something horrific happening to one person - gender doesn’t matter - and it forever changed her. She went back and got her own revenge.

In this situation it was portrayed that there weren’t many places she could go to get justice. Someone called this film “the most unmasculine movie ever directed by a man.” I don’t know why - because the woman has power in this film?

I’ve had a lot of people come to me and tell me that they start to feel sorry for the guys by the end of the film. The original doesn’t really go to the lengths we go to with the revenge portion.

In a way, that was somewhat intended. I went to the actors and told them that I don’t want cartoon bad guys. There is a reason why you guys are like this, even though we don’t address it directly. Audiences need to see behind the eyes of the bad guys; it can’t be on the surface.

For each of the guys in this film, there is a moment where you look at them and start to feel bad, even though you are with Jennifer and cheering her on.

You had a really small budget for this film: around $1.5 million. Was that on purpose?

So many of these remakes of zero-budget horror films seem to have too much money.

My manager always laughs at me because I like to say I don’t want a movie with too much money. I’ll give some of it back!

I think if you get too comfortable, you don’t make the right creative choices. I don’t think it was planned; that was just our budget. Nobody thinks the movie was the budget that it was; everyone thinks it was much more.

You can do a lot with a little, but you can’t do a lot with nothing. I don’t see any reason why a horror movie should have a $20 million budget.

Would you be interested in doing a sequel?

I would, as long as a sequel could be made that has the impact of the original, and the impact I hope this remake has. As long as it can be as dark and violent and upsetting of a film.

A sequel can’t be the same story, but it has to carry the same theme. If all that can happen, I would be more than interested. I feel like this remake is part of me now.

To turn over a sequel to someone else - when I know it could be great - would be really hard.

I don't know what I think about that interview. It makes it seem like the rape scene will be as intense, but I really hope not. It's the reason I haven't seen the original.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be very intense; especially when he said that he's making the film with a specific audience in mind.

The audience (fans of the original) expect it to be like that.

In the original she was raped TWICE; once out in the woods, and then she manages to escape to her cabin only to be raped again when they track her down.

BTW, my sis is a huge fan of Jeff Branson from the soaps and she is shocked that he is doing this movie.

My mother then called one night and told me that one of their favorite soap actors has a "new horror film" coming out and she may want to see it.

I was like ok..... are you sure?

 about her wanting to see it. The main reasons I want to see it are for the cast and just plain curiosity. Jeff Branson is on Y&R now, and I haven't seen Rodney Eastman in anything other than the Nightmare movies.

While the rape may be intense, I hope it's not like the original. What I've from others about the original just isn't necessary. That long of a rape scene is in no way needed in a horror film. It doesn't need to be that extensive for the point to be taken. Someone was definitely getting off on that, which is quite disturbing to me.

The intensity of the rape scenes in the original, made Jennifer's revenge that much more effective, IMO.

I Spit on Your Grave

BY ROGER EBERT / October 6, 2010

Rating - Zero stars

This despicable remake of the despicable 1978 film "I Spit on Your Grave" adds yet another offense: a phony moral equivalency.

In the original, a woman foolishly thought to go on holiday by herself at a secluded cabin. She attracted the attention of depraved local men, who raped her, one after the other. Then the film ended with her fatal revenge.

In this film, less time is devoted to the revenge, and more time to verbal, psychological and physical violence against her. Thus it works even better as vicarious cruelty against women.

First, let’s dispatch with the fiction that the film is about "getting even."

If I rape you, I have committed a crime. If you kill me, you have committed another one. The ideal outcome would be two people unharmed in the first place.

The necessity of revenge is embedded in the darker places of our minds, and most hate speech is driven by "wrongs" invented in unbalanced minds. No one who commits a hate crime ever thinks his victim is innocent.

That set aside, let’s see what this movie does.

The woman, Jennifer (Sarah Butler), is a writer who rents a cabin in the woods where she plans to stay by herself. Once we know this, we start waiting for the gas station occupied by demented rednecks. There’s always one. Of course that’s where Jennifer stupidly asks directions and reveals where she’s going to ignorant, leering phallus carriers.

There are four. One is their "ringleader." One is his sidekick. One compulsively makes video recordings. The fourth is mentally handicapped, and they treat him as their pet "retard."

After many scenes involving alarming noises in the night and the usual Woman in Fear sequences, the men enter her cabin and terrorize her.

They use words and guns. They insinuate. They toy with her answers. They enjoy her terror.

This is rape foreplay, and they stretch it out as long as they can. There is a reason for this. Rape is a crime of violence, not sex, and the male rapist typically savors the fear he causes more than the sex. Indeed, if he enjoyed sex more, he might not be a rapist.

The true pornography in this film involves the dialogue and situation in the cabin before the physical assault. It is well done. This is a professionally made film.

The audience is very, very quiet. Some share Jennifer’s terror. Some, I am afraid, may be aroused or entertained by it.

When the rape inevitably arrives, it is the hapless mental deficient Matthew (Chad Lindberg) who is forced by the others to go first. Otherwise, he crouches, whimpering in a corner. The movie’s exploitation of his handicap is on a par with its cruel sadism.

Eventually, Jennifer is thoroughly raped and runs away into the woods barefoot and almost naked, and when they approach with a shotgun to eliminate her as a witness, jumps from a high bridge and disappears.

We will slip past the movie’s non-explanation for her survival and reappearance, to consider her revenge. I chose not to describe her methods. Let me suggest that if you recall any of the torture scenes described in the novels of Cormac McCarthy or Larry McMurtry, I suspect the director and writer of this film remember them as well.

Jennifer’s methods are elaborate, bizarre and cruel.

Oh, sure, they have it coming to them — except for the pathetic Matthew, who has been a victim all his life and is now punished by Jennifer, even though she witnessed his grief and innocence. He is a man and must die.

A couple of tortures here inspired groans from the audience, but this stuff isn’t a novelty for connoisseurs of horror movies. Consider "Saw" and anything with "chainsaw" in its title.

No, it’s the first half of the movie that’s offensive. It implicitly assigns us the POV of the men as they taunt and terrorize Jennifer in plausible ways — which are different from her killing methods, which are implausible, probably impossible, and offered and received as entertainment.

Now here’s an interesting thing. There were walkouts at the packed screening I attended. Not many, maybe eight or nine. Nobody walked out in the second half; they all left in the first half.

And ... they were all men. Most of the audience looked like they were on dates. For conversation afterward if you see this loathsome film, here are some suggestions.

Men, ask your dates: What bothered you more, the first or second half? Would you recommend this movie to your girlfriends? Did you enjoy it? (It’s OK, you can be honest.)

Women, ask your dates: What part did you like the most, the first or second half? Would you recommend this movie to your sister? Why did we go to this particular film? Did you know there were two new four-star films playing in the same multiplex?

Both men and women may find some food for thought in the answers. Certain answers may cause you to ask yourself if you have any future with this other person.

I liked it. The rape scene was more intense than I would have preferred, but I'm sure it was tame compared to the original. The kills were quite creative. It was a bit different seeing a current soap star in a role like this.

Anchor Bay Announces Both I Spit on Your Grave DVD/Blu-rays
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

In 1978, Meir Zarchi’s I Spit On Your Grave shocked audiences all over the world. Critics reviled it, but audiences embraced its “Day of the Woman” empowerment message.

Three decades later, lightning struck again with the 2010 remake, which shocked 21st century moviegoers.

Now, Anchor Bay Entertainment completes the grisly circle of revenge with the February 8, 2011 release of the unrated I Spit On Your Grave – both the 1978 original classic and the state-of-the-art 2010 remake on high-definition Blu-ray and DVD.

This release marks the U.S. Blu-ray debut of the original cult classic.

Produced by CineTel Films’ Lisa Hansen and Paul Hertzberg in association with Anchor Bay Films, and directed by Steven R. Monroe, 2010’s I Spit On Your Grave tells the story of Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler), a city girl who rents an isolated cabin in the country to write her latest novel.

On one terrifying evening, a group of local lowlifes break into the cabin, overpower and assault Jennifer, ultimately leaving her for dead. But Jennifer miraculously survives her ordeal; consumed with hell-borne vengeance for those who so violated her, she repays their heinous acts in gruesome ways that these lowlifes never thought imaginable.

The cast includes:

Jeff Branson (“The Young and the Restless”)
Daniel Franzese (Mean Girls, Bully)
Rodney Eastman (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 & 4)
Chad Lindberg (“Supernatural,” The Fast and the Furious)
Tracey Walter (Erin Brockovich, Batman, Repo Man)
and Andrew Howard (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen).

Meir Zarchi, the writer/producer/director of the 1978 original, served as Executive Producer.

Unlike with the original film, mainstream and genre critics alike have embraced the new version from the very beginning.

The New York Times called it “extremely efficient grindhouse,” while New York Magazine’s David Edelstein extolled “Each killing is as protracted, humiliating, ingenious, gory and downright poetic as any I’ve seen, and I’ve seen it all.”

Bloody-Disgusting’s Brad Miska said “The audience gasped, screamed and cheered as they watched Sarah Butler drop the axe on her assailants,” while Rue Morgue Magazine declared it “a cinematic bulldozer…it handily trumps the original in the ferocious revenge sequences.”

Bonus features on the 2010 I Spit On Your Grave Blu-ray and DVD include:

- a filmmakers commentary track with Hansen and Monroe
- an in-depth behind-the-scenes featurette
- the original theatrical teaser and trailer
- deleted scenes
...and much more

The 1978 I Spit On Your Grave Blu-ray features:

- an all-new high definition transfer
- an all-new interview with writer/producer/director Meir Zarchi about the making of this infamous cinematic landmark and its legacy for the past three decades
